✨ The Girl Who Didn’t Belong
The first thing Lina Vale learned about rich people was this.. They never noticed the people who cleaned up their mess. That was why she kept her head down as she polished the marble floors of Blackwood Mansion, her reflection staring back at her from the flawless surface, small, quiet, invisible… Exactly how she liked it, Or at least… how she had learned to survive. The mansion stretched endlessly around her, a palace of glass, gold, and cold silence. Chandeliers sparkled overhead like frozen stars, and every step echoed as if the walls themselves were watching. This wasn’t a home, It was a kingdom, and Lina was nothing more than a servant in it. “Lina!” the sharp voice cut through the air. Lina! She didn’t flinch. She never did. Instead, she straightened slowly, placing the cloth neatly on the silver tray before turning to face Mrs. Dalloway, the head housekeeper. “Yes, ma’am,” Lina answered. Mrs. Dalloway’s lips pressed into a thin line. “You’re needed upstairs.” Lina blinked once. Upstairs? Why?? “No questions… Move.” Mrs Dalloway said That was unusual to Lina. Staff like Lina weren’t meant to be seen, especially not on the upper floors, where the real power lived. Still, she nodded. “Yes, ma’am.” As she climbed the grand staircase, her heartbeat remained steady, but something unfamiliar curled low in her stomach. Not fear, but something else Something like anticipation. The air upstairs felt different. It felt colder, quieter, more dangerous… Lina stepped onto the polished hallway, her soft shoes making no sound. Every door was closed. Every inch of space felt controlled, calculated, untouchable. She had only taken two steps forward when a voice stopped her. “Who let you up here?” It was low, sharp and commanding. Lina turned, and for a moment, she forgot how to breathe. Adrian Blackwood stood at the far end of the hallway, his presence filling the space like a storm waiting to break. He was taller than she expected, broader, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit that looked like it had never known a wrinkle. His dark shiny hair was pushed back neatly, his expression carved from pure control, but it was his eyes that held her Cold, piercing as if he could see straight through her. Lina recovered quickly. “I was told I was needed upstairs, sir.” Her voice was calm. Respectful. But not submissive. That was her first mistake. Adrian’s gaze sharpened. “By who?” “Mrs. Dalloway,” she answered sharply Silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating. Then he started walking toward her slowly without hesitation Each step is deliberate. Lina didn’t move, didn't look away, didn’t bow her head like she was supposed to. By the time he stopped in front of her, the space between them felt charged like something invisible had snapped into place. “You don’t look nervous,” he said quietly. “I didn’t realize I was supposed to be.” she replied Another mistake. A flicker of something crossed his face interest, maybe irritation. “Everyone is nervous around me.” “Maybe they shouldn’t be.” the words slipped out before she could stop them. The moment they did, the air shifted dangerously Adrian tilted his head slightly, studying her like she was something unfamiliar… something out of place. “What’s your name?” he asked “Lina.” “Just Lina?” “Lina Vale.” He repeated it under his breath, like he was testing the sound of it. “Vale.” Something about the way he said it made her chest tighten, it was strange and uncomfortable. As if her name meant more than she understood. “Look at me,” he said suddenly. Lina blinked. “I am looking at you.” “No,” Adrian said softly. “You’re avoiding me.” Her jaw tightened slightly. “I’m not avoiding anything.” A lie. And somehow… he knew it. Because the next thing he did made her heart stumble. He stepped closer, too close. Close enough that she could feel the faint warmth of him, smell something clean and expensively sharp, controlled, like everything else about him. Close enough that her calm started to crack. “Then prove it,” he murmured. Lina lifted her chin and met his gaze fully. For a second, neither of them moved, neither of them spoke. And something— something unspoken, something dangerous passed between them. Adrian’s eyes darkened, not with anger but with recognition. It was gone just as quickly as it came. He stepped back, the distance returned and the moment broke. “Go back downstairs,” he said flatly. Lina frowned slightly. “But I was told…” “I didn’t ask what you were told.” There it was, the coldness, the control, The reminder of exactly who he was, and who she wasn’t. Lina swallowed whatever response rose in her throat and nodded. “Yes, sir.” She turned and walked away without another word. But she could feel it. His eyes on her, watching, following, Like she was something he couldn’t quite figure out. Adrian didn’t move until she disappeared down the stairs. Only then did his expression change slightly. Barely noticeable to anyone else, but enough. “Lina Vale,” he murmured again. The name lingered. Too familiar. A shadow shifted behind him. “Is it her?” Adrian didn’t turn. “You already know the answer.” His assistant stepped forward, lowering his voice. “Then why keep her here like this? Why not just…” “Because,” Adrian cut in quietly, “I want to see who she is without it.” “Without what?” Adrian’s gaze dropped to the polished floor below. “To see who she becomes… when she has nothing.” A pause. “And if she fails?” His lips curved slightly. Cold and dangerous. “Then she was never worth finding” Downstairs, Lina exhaled slowly as she returned to her duties. She didn’t know why her hands felt slightly unsteady. Didn’t know why her chest felt tight. It was just an encounter. Just her employer. Just another reminder of her place. So why did it feel like something had changed? She shook it off and picked up her cloth again, kneeling to continue cleaning the floor. But as she worked, something caught her eye. A reflection. Not of herself. But of the grand staircase behind her. And for a brief second She saw it. A flash, a memory, A younger version of herself… standing at the top of those very stairs. Dressed in something elegant. Not a uniform. Not a maid. Something… more. Lina froze. Her breath caught. Then it was gone. Just like that. The reflection returned to normal. Empty, Silent, Unreal. She blinked rapidly, her heart suddenly racing. “What was that…?” She had never been here before. Had she? No. That was impossible. This was her first job in a place like this. Her first time in a mansion. Her first time seeing wealth like this. So why did it feel… familiar? Upstairs, Adrian stood by the window, watching the grounds below. But his mind wasn’t on the view. It was on her. On the way she stood. The way she spoke. The way she looked at him Not with fear, Not with greed, Not with recognition, Nothing… And that was the problem, Because he knew her. He had known her long before she ever stepped foot into this house, Long before she became Lina Vale, Long before she forgot everything. His jaw tightened. “This time,” he said quietly, almost to himself, “I’ll make sure you remember.” Downstairs, Lina pressed a hand to her chest, trying to steady her breathing. Something wasn’t right. Something about this place. About him, about herself. And for the first time since she arrived at Blackwood Mansion… Lina Vale felt it. The unsettling pull of a truth she couldn’t yet see. The feeling that her life Everything she believed about it— It was about to change.
