Mate

3059 Words
Louise had felt someone looking at her the moment she had sat down to eat with Clara, she had thought it was Brett as he walked away but as the night wore on, those eyes had been even more evident. Louise knew that whatever the person was looking at her for, it was merely because this strange person was in the pack, and humans in a pack always seemed like a weird concept. It wasn’t uncommon, because some wolves did find mates within the human community and would have brought them to their pack which their pack would have accepted them gladly. But she was a worker, nothing more and for her to be placed into the pack seemed rather outlandish. Clara turned to her and let out a satisfied sigh. “So what do you think of the food?”  Louise could see that her new friend loved this place, and she understood why. “Food is amazing, and there is so much food as well.” She looked over to the other tables taking in at how everyone was so generous with their food, sharing plates and drinks with one another. “Everyone is so open to sharing and being with one another, it really is something you don’t see in the human world.” Clara looked at her friend and nodded, understanding this was far from different from what she was used to. “Packs are supposed to share with one another. We share everything, food, comfort, anguish, guilt, love, and even personal belongings.” She watched as Louise's face turned confused. “Love?” She wasn’t understanding what Clara had meant. “Yeah, we have all a direct line to one another, that’s what keeps us safe. We can hear one another. We have a direct link, If we need to.” Louise looked sad to hear about this. “So basically you don’t have any privacy?” She noted. Clara's shocked face had Louise even more confused. Trying to get Louise to grasp the true situation she turned Louise towards her. “Oh gosh, no what I mean is that if we need to, if we want to, we can share things with one another without letting a word slip.” she smiled again. “It’s like telepathy?” Louise's ‘Oh’ face finally let Clara feel better that she finally had understood her. Clara digged into her food once more not paying any attention to anyone else. Brett had talked Jarret’s ear off about Louise since they had sat down. Jarret was getting more than annoyed. He knew his brother was smitten with her. But how was he ever going to be able to sit here when he knew she was supposed to be his mate. He cursed himself at the thought that he had found his mate and she was human of all things. Humans were selfish and weak, he knew that she would and could be both of those. He knew that if his wolf was telling him that she was the one, that he would be in for a fight for his life. He wasn’t going to allow his wolf to win this. There was no way that the Alpha or the Blue Moon Pack was going to have a human for a mate. He looked at Brett again and realized that even though his brother was a bit of a player, that he had obviously felt different about Louise. Taking another glance at her he got a better look. She was indeed beautiful as Brett had mentioned. She had beautiful sparkling blue eyes, golden blonde hair that fell to the middle of her back. A small frame, tiny waist, and round hips. She wasn’t overalls chesty, and she had the most dainty features allowing it to frame her face. His head was swimming with thoughts of how she would feel underneath him. He mentally pushed them away and turned towards his brother. “Brett, let us talk about other things than women.” It was a statement, not a question. Brett smirked and nodded. “Sure. Tell me how have things with dad been?” He looked towards his father. “Father has been rather weak as of late. I know when you took over being Alpha it was sooner than we all thought you would, but dad needed you to. I worry that he is getting too weak and soon we will lose him as I have always feared.” Jarret looked at the worry in his brother. It was right that his father had been ill and for this reason had relinquished his title as Alpha to his oldest son. Jarret had taken it over easily enough. Everyone had accepted him either way and he knew he could be a good Alpha to his pack . He, himself worried about his father's illness and strength. He would, however, wait until he had more reason to worry, before he would take action. Knowing that worrying about this would not change anything. Turning towards his brother he grabbed his shoulder and let out a large sigh. “He will be fine, we have to have faith until we have a reason not to.” That was all he said and then decided he would proceed to continue to eat his food. He was sure Brett would be introducing him to his new obsession shortly and he needed all the strength he could muster. The evening was drawing to a close and Louise was getting tired, she hadn’t done anything other than move and unpack and she was exhausted. “Clara, I think I am going to turn in, I am getting tired.” She motioned towards the door. Clara nodded and moved to say goodnight to her friend when she caught Brett, Jarret, and Juliet walking towards them. “Wait.” She motioned to stop her. “Brett is coming and he is bringing Jarret and Juliet with him.’ She mentioned for Louise to looked behind her. Louise stopped at watched as the figure beside Brett walk towards her. He was even more handsome than his brother Brett. Dark brown hair, deep brown eyes with a hint of gold, chiseled jaw, broad shoulders, muscular and average in height. She was taken aback at how absolutely gorgeous he was. Moving to stand up as she waited for them to come to stand beside her, she mentally heard herself claim him with an inner growl and the words ‘mine’ and she was shocked and confused about what just happened. Brett stood beside Louise turning towards his brother. “This is Louise.” He smiled sweetly at her. “Louise this is my older brother Jarret and his girl Juliet.” Louise again took a look at Jarret’s handsome face and nodded her head and looked towards the girl that was hanging on his arm. Juliet was pretty, chestnut-colored hair, green eyes, a slim figure, and a rather large chest. She was wearing jeans, heels, and a slim-fitting top that defiantly emphasized her full rack. Louise mentally noted how grubby she looked wither her baggy shirt and jeans  “Nice to meet you both.” She moved to shake their hands. Juliet gave her hand to Louise like she was giving it to a peasant and made Louise internally recoil. Jarret on the other hand was a little less uppity about it. Once their hands connected the spark was real and they looked at one another for what seemed like forever. Brett moved towards Louise to pull her closer to him noticing the strange way that Jarret had looked at her. The moment that Brett put his hand around Louise's elbow to steer her towards him. Jarret and Louise dropped their hand from one another, Jarret let out a rather quiet growl. Getting a look from not just Brett but Juliet.  It was Juliet that motioned for her and Jarret to leave. “I am sure we see one another soon.” Juliet snickered as she turned away. “Nice to meet you” was all Jarret could say.  Brett looked at his brother as he walked away from them with confusion as to what had just happened. His brother was rude, but never that rude. Juliet obviously had felt threatened as well seeing as she was quick to remove Jarret from the situation which was far away from him and Louise. Brett turned to Louise and smiled. “Well, that’s Jarret for you.” He pulled her away from Clara and others at the table so he could have a moment with her. She followed him; however, was still reeling from the magnetic interaction she had just had with Jarret and herself.  “Clara will be showing you what to do tomorrow, but maybe I could steal you away for lunch?” Louise smiled brightly at him and moved closer to Brett, forgetting her earlier thoughts on Jarret. “ I would love that. I think Clara had said we break for lunch at 12:30 pm” he nodded and let out a toothy grin. “I’ll meet you here and we go off to the next village downwards to the plains for lunch, I know of a great restaurant I used to go to with my mother.” She nodded her head in understanding. He grabbed her hand and kissed it before pulling away reluctantly. “See you tomorrow then?” she nodded again and repeated. “See you tomorrow.” Louise had gone to bed not too long after that. She had mentioned to Clara where she would be going tomorrow and got nothing but excited squeals. “You do realize that Brett has the hots for you? He has always been very flirtatious with girls, but he never takes them to the restaurant in the near villages.” Louise looked intrigued at her statement. “What would he normally do then?” She asked. Clara motioned towards the door ready to walk out before she left the last piece of information to Louise. “Take them to the hall for burgers.” She laughed hard as she waved goodbye and exited Louise's room. Louise got into her bed, ready to turn the day in and bring on the night. She had just had one of the best days in her life. she was already starting to love it here. Everyone was so nice. She had already made friends and gotten completely smitten with a guy. She put the thoughts out of her mind so she could sleep. Tomorrow she would officially start work in her new home around her new family.  Seven AM rolled around too quickly. Louise had noticed that Clara was barging into her room,  pulling her out of bed. She had jeans and a t-shirt on. with an apron over top. Louise looked at the apron in Clara’s hands. Louise pulled on a dressing gown and moved towards the door, ready to head to the bathroom down the hall. She got into the shower and scrubbed her body clean. washed her face, brushed her teeth, and headed back to her room. She put on new pair of fitted jeans and a t-shirt plastered with faces of her favorite band. She grabbed the apron that Clara had placed on her bed and put it on. Clara had sat on her bed waiting for her until she was ready. “Ready?” Clara asked. Louise nodded and they moved out of her room towards the hall. “First things first. We get to clean the hall up from any of last night's forgotten messes. We run the day crew, there is a night crew that does the cleaning for the evening. They mostly work on cleaning the hall and cleaning the areas that have been lived in through the day. We are in charge of cleaning anything left from last night, breakfast, lunch, and we do the cleaning in the main areas thought the day. Everyone is in charge of their own rooms. We Just worry about the common areas.” She turned to Louise. “You understanding?” Louise nodded “Yes, keep going I’m following.” Clara moved to take a bin from the back kitchen and she gave it to Louise. Louise took the bucket and looked at Clara. ‘You need to go clear off any leftover plates, glasses, or garbage that was left from last night. We get to clean the tables.” Louise nodded and went off straight away cleaning the tables. She watched as eight more people rushed into the kitchen and started to bustle around making dishes of food ready to be served for everyone. “Clara,  do we get to eat with everyone, or do we wait?” Clara hadn’t looked at Louise when she answered her. “We eat over there. With the kitchen people.” She pointed to a table that was backed in the corner. “Mostly we leave out food and clean it up, so we take turns in eating and wait until eleven before we start getting lunch set up. Once we do lunch it's the same thing until about three. But we get an hour each to eat lunch, we have to cover the other.  Then we go work on the rooms until about five. Then we let the night crew take over. The main rooms we worry about after three are the games room,  library, patio, movie room, and the living room.” Louise nodded understanding the rules. “So what does everyone else do?” Clara stood up from wiping the table. “Everyone has their jobs, we have some taking care of the cattle and chickens, some taking care of vegetables, some taking care of exterior stuff like fences, housing, roofing, etc etc. We try to make it self efficient here so that we don’t have to worry. People that work here are hired from the estate. even though your pack, you require to keep the estate going. But a lot of the rest of the pack have actual jobs that they go and earn.” So why is it that we all live in one big house and not our own homes on our own land or even in the villages?” Louise asked. Clara took a moment to think about it before she answered. “Well you see because we are packs, we like to live with one another. If you noticed that this place has a lot of rooms. Most of the single people, live here. but once you have a mate you can go build a home on the land. You gotta remember though that you produce money not for you but for us all. We work together If you want or need something the Alpha provides.” Louise nodded understanding. ‘So basically it’s like a cult.’ She thought. “Not a cult Louise, just different living circumstances, everyone pitches in. You gotta think primal.”  Louise was taken off guard that Clara knew she thought cult, that she had her answer already. She internally grumbled at how stupid she was to herself. With that, they continued with the cleaning and the setup of the hall. Jarret rolled out of bed, pulling on sweats and a shirt. He moved towards the bathroom, splashing water on his face he felt more awake for doing so. He brushed his teeth yawning every so often. After that, he went to go find a new t-shirt and a pair of dark denim jeans. He looked at his hair, messed from the night, and quickly styled it before walking out of the room. He made sure to grab his keys to his truck, his wallet, and his jacket. Jarret had like everyone else gotten a job, he worked for the county. He was in charge of making sure the lumber yards were working correctly. His father had always wanted him to be successful. Because no matter what having a good-paying job proved that the Alpha could provide. He wasn't no CEO, but he was in charge and made a significant amount of money. Small rural area’s thrived on lumber, and being in charge of the lumber yards that were always busy.  He moved outside and got into his truck and drove off towards the lumber yard. He looked to his left and watched as Louise pulled the garbage over her head and to try to throw it in the garbage bin. Struggling the whole time she did it. He stopped the truck got out and gave her a hand. Standing behind her he reached out and pushed it over. “Thank you.” She said and turned around to see who was standing there helping. “Your welcome.” His deep voice said in return. They looked at one another for a moment, sparks filling the air around them. She moved to walk away and tripped over her own foot and started to fall towards the ground face first. Jarret was quick to catch her in his arms, as his arm went around her waist, and the other hand held onto her arm. He looked at her face as a shock spread. Instantly his wolf was screaming at him. The physical connection with his mate had made him feel so good. Instantly he realized what he was doing and placed her in the standing position before grumbling to himself.  “You need to be less of a klutz and be careful.” He grumbled at her. she nodded and looked at him. “Yes, sorry and thank you.” He turned away from her, scared that if he lingered any longer he might have kissed her senseless. Louise watched as he walked away. Something deep inside told her not to let him walk away. A possessiveness formed around her. ‘Mine.’ The voice bellowed.  She didn’t know what she had heard. The one thing she was sure of was that it was getting louder.
