Chapter 7Several days went by without George seeing or hearing from Axel. At first, he didn’t think much about it, but then he worried. Showing him the garden might have been a mistake. Sharing his food—and not only food, but meat—might have been a mistake.
George had been so sure he would do what was best for Mira, and getting regular meals was best for her, but he was a controller. How much loyalty did he have for the government? Did he support the system when it failed him?
Many living in the cities did. They had no means of growing their own food and therefore they found it fair that everyone who had a big enough garden should pay a weekly quota of food. They found it fair that people like him had to work at home and at his job to provide for them.
