“Hury becca i'm going to miss my plane!” I urged loudly. I rested my head on the glass of Becca's passenger side door “I'm going as fast as I can! It's not my fault you waited until 8 am to start packing knowing you needed to be on a plan at 9:30!” Becca glanced over at me as we pulled to a red light “And was with that musty old box you made me drop off at the ups store and have it shipped to your new address.. Aren't you rich or something now? Couldn't you have just bought whatever it was when you got there?” the blonde exclaimed, sounding irritated. My eye twitched thinking about the carefully packaged crystals, herbs and potions packed tightly into the small box. I had briefly forgotten about the fact I was mailing things detrimental to my learning and may not ever see them again.
“And what was with that dusty old book you shoved on top of your brand new clothes?” Becca questioned as she looked out at the traffic trying to dodge and weave though the morning rush. “Family heirlooms.” I stared blankly out the window watching the roadside forest zoom past in a blur of green and brown. “Be honest, this isn't a job, it's rehab isn't it?” Becca asked with a motherly tone. I resisted the urge to bash my head into the glass, biting my tongue lightly as Becca continued “It's because I accidentally slept with Josh, isn't it? You turned to drugs for comfort--”
“BECCA!” I screamed cutting Becca off mid annoying sentence as I grasped the steering wheel, yanking it to the left to maneuver the car out of the way of a stopped car in the middle of the interstate. “Jesus christ, Serenity!” I gazed at Becca in disbelief, My mouth opened slightly. “What? You almost got us killed!” I sighed and sat back in my seat crossing my arms over my chest with a small huff.
“Well you're the one on drugs..” Becca murmured softly under her breath. “ Well you're the one who’s homeless, broke, jobless, No degree, No boyfriend, OH and guess what? You sleep with your only friend's boyfriend!” I spat under my breath before continuing “And I'm not on drugs.” Becca glanced over at me before turning her eyes onto the three lane highway. “You know what, just stop the car.” I said as I grabbed my purse from the floor bored and started to unbuckle my seat belt. “Serenity, don't be crazy!” I placed my hand on the door handle and gave her the ‘dont try me’ look as she glanced between me and the busy road. “ Okay, okay! I'm going to get off on this exit ramp and let you out! You don't have to be such a diva..”
Becca said that last part softly and mostly to herself. She cut multiple cars off by switching lanes, causing other drivers to slam on her brakes and lay on their horns as they pulled off the exit ramp onto the side of the busy road. “ Are you sure you want to get out now? You're like a mile away from the airport.” Becca questioned though she kept the same irritated tone. “Yup” I said firmly as I opened the door narrowly avoiding getting run over by a blue Ford F150 truck. “Asshole.” I muttered as I began to pull my two suitcases from the back of Becca's red sedan. “ Becca, I expect my rent on the first of the month. I left a phone number on the fridge for Mr. Peters, he is my attorney. You will be passing all payments, questions and concerns to him. He will also be coming by to check in on the welfare of my house. Don’t call me.” I stated bluntly before shutting her door.
Pulling the handles up on the suitcases I began to pull them along the side of the road in the opposite direction of Becca's car as I heard her speed off, her tires squealing in off behind me. I rolled my eyes at her childish display. pausing for a minute I grabbed my purse and pulled it in front of me as I dug through the black bag for my airpods, feeling the pastel pink silicone airpod case I gently pulled from my bag and popped them into my ears.
Pulling my suitcases along the shoulder of the bumpy road slowly as I began digging though my playlist trying to ignore the 98’ honda civic with white chipping paint and more than a few dents as it slowly rolled next to me as the driver rolled down the window. “Hey cutie! Need a ride?” he called over to me, I glanced over slightly and saw a scrunery looking man with an untamed ginger beard and scratched up sunglasses. I scoffed softly and kept walking quickly opening my phone app dialing ‘911’ stalling my thumb over the call button as i hear the white car pull to a stop on the road shoulder behind me “s**t,” I mumbled softly as I heard the rusty car door squeak open and his sneakers crunching across some small rocks and debris from the busy road.
“Come on cutie, did your boyfriend break up with you and leave you stranded?” I rolled my eyes and kept walking away from them, giving no indication that I could hear him at all. As I kept walking, the pest of a human being kept calling after me, slowly walking behind me. “ Hey, come on beautiful..don't walk away let us help you..” his voice cracked as he spoke. I thought to myself before hearing a second door open and another pair of shoes hit the pavement. f**k I thought as i felt a damp hand close around my wrist. Oh you've got to be kidding me, its board f*****g daylight i thought to myself again as i glared over my shoulder at the pest of a man child.
My eyes caught sight of the dirt stained white shirt and dirt covered jeans and work boots. Wonderful. “Respectfully, Leave me the hell alone. Get back in your little car, and for the love of god, please go wash your hands.” I spat as I yanked my hand away from his grip letting go of my luggage. glancing over at his little friend who was standing back on the sidelines smoking a cigarette. My words earned a laugh from the ginger bearded man “Feisty little redhead..I like that..” he spoke with a grin that exposed his yellowing teeth.
I stepped back slightly as his hands reached for me again, his friend who was equally covered in dirt threw his cigarette to the ground and began walking towards us. “Today is not the day, and I am not the one!” I shouted at him as I brought my right arm back, forming my hand into a fist and placing my feet shoulder width apart. “Carefully girly, you might get hurt..” His friend said darkly. I could smell his breath despite the few feet between us. I flug my fist forward, his blackened, moist hand catching my small fist. A small smirk playing upon his cracked lips “You shouldn't have done that, sweetheart..” he spoke darkly as he gripped my fist tightly and yanked my body forward. "What's wrong, little girly?" the sunglasses asked with a laugh.
"Poor little baby, cat got her tongue!" the 'men' continued to joke as I stumbled and almost fell as a hand reached out grabbing me by hair yanking me backwards until my back hit a man's chest. “Let. Me.Go.” my voice came out in a growl as I slammed my right elbow back into the man's stomach and stomped on his left foot. His hand releases the grip on my red curls as he doubles over in pain “You stupid b***h!” he spat as his friend edged towards me.
A large black suv type vehicle skirted up behind me, kicking up a dirt cloud as it pulled to a slanted stop. I looked back at the SUV in confusion as I watched the door pop open and one well dressed leg come into view from behind it. Dirt clouds settling over his shiny dress shoes. Salt and pepper swooshed hair came into view from the top of the door, warm hazel eyes filled with frustration looking past me at the two pathetic excuses for men. “Mr. peters?” I questioned softly, dropping my guard for a moment. “Get in the car serenity..” my peters said darkly looking at the two men menacingly, who slowly backed away one with a significant limp, into the direction of their car. “It's not what it looks like!” I heard the pathetic stammering without looking at them. I grabbed my things and walked around to the car throwing my things into the leather back seat flinching as I slammed the back door accidentally. I opened the passenger side door and attempted to climb into the large suv, before i could think about how i was going to get in the car i felt a pair of warm hands fall upon my waist and lift me up into the car. A blush warmed my face as Mr. Peters leaned over and pulled the seatbelt across my chest and buckled me in. “Are you okay?” he asked quickly as he placed his hand on top of my head gently, his hazel eyes looking down in my emerald orbs with warmth and compassion. Realizing I had been staring for too long and not responding I averted my gaze to my feet only able to nod my head in embarrassment. “Watch your hands and feet.” He stated warmly before closing the door carefully. I could hear the old civic burn rubber as it swerved back on to highway almost causing an accident as they did so. My face was burning hot as I wrung my hands together, looking down at my feet.
Mr.Peters climbed into his car buckling his own seat belt as he switched the car from park to drive, I could feel the car shift slightly. He looked over at me “ Headed to the airport?” he asked softly as I looked over at him, still flustered. “Y-yes “ I stammered out. “Alrighty..” he spoke softly, his eyes roaming over me so gently as if I would shatter like glass. He turned his eyes back on to the road as he looked in both directions before pulling out in a pause of traffic.
After a moment of silence I looked over at Mr. Peters “Thank you..for saving me..” i spoke softly “But..how--” my question was interrupted as he looked at me with that sexy, slanted smile before speaking. “Becca called me, she was asking about the rent but she let the cat out of the bag that she left you here..i just happened to be close by.” his eyes had returned to the road but he kept his same slanted smile, the morning sun rays danced over his skin as the clouds parted. “Wow..” I mumbled out loud--pressing my lips together realizing my mistake only further increasing my blush.
He gave me a knowing glance “Hrm?” he questioned before turning his eyes back on the road. “O-oh nothing!” I stumbled over my words quickly looking down, pressing my hands into my lap nervously. “Are you sure you want that girl living in your childhood home though?” He asked casually. “Oh..Becca? Yeah, it's fine. We fight like sisters but I'll always care about her.. No matter what wrong she does..”
My voice trailed off, embarrassment forgotten as I gazed out the window as the passing cars in the opposite lane. “You're too kind, Serenity” There it was again, the way he said my name almost possessively. The blush creeped over my skin again. Come on, you're not a school girl. Stop acting like one. I thought to myself biting my lip trying to will myself to stop feeling these things for a man who is old enough to be my father. “Yeah, maybe I am.” I said laughing softly at the nonexistent joke. we stayed silent the rest of the short drive to the airport. my mind wandering back to the secret room and the wind like voices that danced around me. It was..magical. I thought to myself as i stared out the tinted passenger window not focusing on any particular thing.
"Serenity..Serenity..?" my thoughts were interrupted as his warm hand rested on my knee. i looked up and over at him, shocked "huh? what?" I asked softly earning a small laugh at my expression "Didn't sleep well last night? we are here" he said softly, almost as if talking to a child. "oh.." I looked around in slight confusion making Mr. Peters laugh once again. he opened his door and jumped out, walking around the car quickly and opening my door before i had a chance to process what was going on. he leaned over me again as he turned his eye gazing into my eyes gently while he unbuckled my seatbelt. Damn, turn i'll in to a if im around this man much longer! I squealed in my thoughts. his lips grazed the tip of my nose as he sat up " Oh, sorry about that. Here, let me help you out.."
Oh my god, did he just..? I asked myself internally as I moved my legs to get out "I can g--" once again I was interrupted as he lifted me from the car by my waist gently setting my feet on the ground. he looked down at me for a moment, I couldn't read his expression before his hands slowly retreated and he busied himself with pulling out my luggage. What was that about? I questioned myself as I tried to hide my puzzled expression. he smiled politely as he handed me my purse before shutting the car doors. "Well, I wouldn't be a gentlemen if I didn't see you off." he began pulling my luggage towards the airport "oh no, Mr.Peters, I wouldn't want to impose on your day!" I quickly followed after him "Don't worry Serenity..also please call me Chadson." I paused for a moment as i watched Chadson retreat in to the glass revolving doors pulling my luggage along with him. "W-what Mr--I mean Chadson!" I called after him following behind him.
Chadson walked with me though the large windowed airport insisting on carrying my things as we made our way to the desk. we stood in line silently, I overheard the teens standing in the line next to us "Do you think thats her dad?" I glanced over slightly still a shade of red and they immediately hushed their voices. "I dont think thats her dad.." one whispered to the other avoided eye contact with me while snickering. I sifted my weight from one leg to other uncomfortably as I crossed my arms over my chest. "They really keep the air kicking in this place." I said softly. Chadson set my luggage down on the floor without a word, and began removing his suit jacket and placing it around my shoulders. Chadsons body heat radiated in to me from his jacket, my nostrils filled with the soft scent of sandalwood and pine.
"Next Please!" A short blonde called out as chadson picked up all my things and trotted ahead. I quickly pulled up my boarding pass on my phone and placed it on the desk along with my ID. The women frowned lightly "This flight is departing now.. you'll never make it. I can arrange for a later flight if you'd like?" chadson pulled out his wallet and slapped a crisp one hundred dollar bill on to the counter. "Make her make it." he said firmly. the women quickly took the bill behind the counter and picked up the phone quickly speaking with someone on the other end before hanging up. "please wait on the other side of the velvet rope, I have someone coming to get you. "she smiled politely before ushering the next person forward.
just as soon as we made it to the other side of the rope we saw an older man in a golf cart going as fast as he could go in our direction. "Is that for me?" I asked. "I think so.." Chadson said as he looked down at me with a wink. "You didn't have to do all of this you know.. but thank you.." I said looking up at Chadson.
"Miss Anderson?" The older man in the golf cart asked before he pulled to a stop in front of us. "Y-yes" i stammered. "hurry and hop in so we can make your flight!" he said with urgency. Chadson placed my things in the back of the cart and watched as I climbed on it and sat down before he started to climb in as well. "You can't go with her, you don't have a ticket" the older man said grumply "I just wanted so see my love off" Chadson said softly as the older man huffed. "Well fine then but hurry up!" with a smile Chadson climbed in "Exquisite!" he exclaimed before sitting next to me and crossing his legs, resting a hand upon my leg again. He placed his arm around my shoulders as the golf cart zipped through the airport. he leaned down to whisper in my ear "Just play along, don't want them to know they've been fooled."I blushed softly and nodded looking the opposite direction as he nuzzled in to my temple. I might die before i can get on this plane. I thought to myself.
the cart came to a stop outside of an express bag check line "This is where you have to say goodbye." The older man said softly. Chadson stepped out of the cart and began to unload my luggage. I stepped out of the cart as Chadson handed me my purse along with the rest of my luggage. I looked up at him a shy smile playing on my lips. "Thank you, chadson. you really saved me today" my words trailed off as he leaned down and pulled me into a hug. His arms felt warm and strong around my small body. "Stay Safe" he muttered in to my ear before placing a quick kiss on to my forehead. we waved our goodbyes as Chadson hopped back on to the cart. I turned around and headed for the express bag check. I turn around quickly watching the golf cart get lost in the crowd of people vanishing from my sight. I tugged his expensive suit coat around my body "Well, I didn't mean to steal it.." I mumbled before placing my bags on to the conveyor belt.
Chadson placed one hand on the glass revolving door as he reached into his silk lined pants pocket and pulled out his phone. opening up his contacts he tapped on the first name that appeared on his screen. tapping the 'call' button as he climbed into his black SUV. The phone rang twice before they picked up, saying nothing. Chadson licked his lips slightly before speaking. "The Bird has left the nest."
