“Thank you for choosing City bank! Have a good day!” the chipper lady on the other end of the phone chimed loudly. “ Thanks, you too!” I said politely. I immediately hung up the call before tossing my iphone into the passenger seat.
My manicured nails started to pick and peel the activation sticker off the matte black card before flicking the sticker into the back floorboard of my old clunker. Glancing at the time I chewed my bottom lip slightly “ only 12 pm..” I said softly to myself. I pulled down my sun visor and the navy blue with orange trim folder fell into my lap “ oops..” I said sheepishly as I lifted up the folder looking at the green sticky note. Without a second thought I reached for my phone and nervously dialed the number.
The phone rang for what seemed like an eternity, before a woman with a thick Italian accent came across this speaker. “Ciao! You have reached Aurora Orpheus. Please leave a message and I will return your call as soon as I can! Grazi.” panic ran through me for a moment as i had not thought about what i was going to even say, i was slammed out of my thoughts by the loud “beep”. “ oh um- hello my name is Serenity Anderson, I'm an RN new grad, with home health experience, Mr. Peters gave me your information and said you were looking for a live-in nurse? If you are still interested please give me a call back 502-497-5523. Thank you!”
I ended the call quickly and took a deep breath, trying to put my heart back into my chest. I placed my phone back on the passenger seat. “Alright.. Time to go shopping!”
I blasted music as I drove down the busy highway dodging and weaving in and out of traffic in between sips of my peppermint frappuccino. Letting the driver's side window down, feeling the wind in my hair as I sang loudly and badly without a care to a playlist of top 25 pop songs from 2014.
Grinning ear to ear as I pulled into the parking lot of one of my favorite outdoor malls; TrinitySprings. Shops and restaurants of all kinds lined up in a large circle, each of them in perfect walking distances. I could already smell all kinds of food from the restaurants wafting into my car window.
As I parked my old clunker and shut off the engine I could hear my own stomach growl. Pulling down the sun visor I surveyed my make up, running my finger along my bottom eyelid to fix the slight smearing. My red hair looked about as bad as my driving, hair tie clinging on to one curl for dear life. “ Yikes,” I uttered to myself before yanking the hair tie painlessly from my curls, before running my fingers through the loose silky spirals. I placed my hair tie in the center conceal under my radio to hang out with spare change and an old pack of gum. Grabbing my phone and placing it into my black purse along with my keys doing a quick check to make sure I have everything “ Phone, check, keys..check, wallet,.. Check.” mumbling to myself softly before glazing up out of my windshield watching a couple walk past my car, making awkward eye contact.
Well, now they think I'm crazy. Oh well. I thought to myself breaking eye contact as I put my purse over my shoulder and opened the driver's side door. Climbing out of the car before slamming my door shut, I step on to the sidewalk. My black high heels clicking softly on the concrete, feeling slightly overdressed in my red pencil skirt, heels, pantyhoes and white butterfly sleeve blouse. A blush creeps along my cheeks feeling as if I am being watched, I quickened my pace to my restaurant of choice.
I stopped in front of it to admire how well decorated the cafe front was. Twinkling Fairy lights strung around the window and in the indoor potted tree. Through the windows I could see the macrame plant hangers throughout the space. Next to the wooden oversized entrance there were two identical well maintained trees on either side also stung with twinkling fairy lights. Smiling as I tossed my hair over my shoulder, I grasped the amethyst door handles and pulled open the door, promptly being beccond in by the smell of fresh baked sweet breads and coffee. Stepping inside allowing the door to close softly behind me.
“ Welcome to the Lunar Tree! Would you like a sun booth or moon booth?” a raven haired teen greeted me brightly. She wore a loose fitted black dress with silver-glitter moon phases embroidered along the butterfly sleeves and hem. Golden Asymmetric earrings glistening under the twinkling fairy lights depicting a shimmering sun on the longer delicate chain on the right side, the left shorter chain depicting a crescent moon. “A moon booth please” I spoke confidently as I watched the young lady grab a single menu before turning back to me with the same bright smile that she had when I entered.
“Right this way please” She spoke politely with a candied voice. I followed the young lady down a small path between two rows of booths. My eyes wandered over the fairy lights and the hanging plants. I wondered how they water all of those plants I thought to myself. She stopped suddenly in the middle of the row of booths setting my menu and silverware down on the end of the gem embedded oak wood table. Above the table there was a single sphere textured to resemble the moon slowly changing from purple to violet to lavender to pink to blue. “Here we are! Your server will be right with you” The hostess exclaimed as I nodded politely before setting my purse down as I attempted to elegantly slide into the booth.
Not even needing to look at the menu, I slid the clean silverware wrapped in the black and silver trim cloth napkin to my right side. Hearing a faint generic iPhone ringtone, I glanced around for a moment before realizing it was my own phone ringing in my bag. Grabbing my bag with haste I opened it and started to dig for it in the seemingly bottomless abyss that is my purse.
Finally grasping my phone, barely glancing at the number, seeing it begin with 615 panic arose as I answered the phone. “ Hello?” I said politely, trying to ignore the fast drumming of my pulse. “Ciao cara, is this serenity?” The velvet voice thick with Italian questioned . “Yes this is her.” i said nervously “Ciao, this is Aurora Orpheus returning your call about the live-in nurse position. Do you have a memento to talk about the job and your qualifications?” Aurora said in a professional tone.
“Y-yes ma'am” I stammered slightly flinching with embarrassment as I did so. “What is your experience in home health?” Aurora asked simply. “I provided end of life care in my own home to my grandfather. I handled all grooming activities as well as administered medication and feedings via g-tube.
I set up IVs and monitored his condition per doctor's orders. I also worked in a long term care facility as a nursing assistant, and then as a CMT throughout my last years in highschool and in the years it took me to complete nursing school.” i spoke confidently now.
“Will you be able to provide references within the hour? And are you able to relocate and live on site?” Aurora asked softly as the excitement bubbled in my stomach. “ Yes,and yes. I certainly can.” I responded brightly. “Ciao, I look forward to hearing from you soon, serenity”
she hung up before I could respond in perfect timing as the waitress had just come and brought me my usual strawberry water. The berrys danced along with the ice cubes as she placed the cup onto a silver coster. “ I went ahead and ordered your usual, is that alright?” she asked me softly as i smiled and nodded “Thank you!” I chirped out.
It wasn't long before the waitress placed my favorite food in front of me, a small personal sized pepperoni pizza, along with a few bread sticks on the side. Looking up from my phone I smiled and thanked the waitress as she refilled my glass before she disappeared somewhere behind my booth to another table.
I quickly finished typing in all of the information about my previous jobs as well as my grandfather's doctor so he can verify the home health aspects before hitting the little blue arrow to send my text to aurora. Setting my phone down face up I eagerly watched the screen as I pulled a small slice of the pizza apart, the meltedwhite cheese creating small strings as I did so. I started to chow down on pizza realizing how hungry I really was even if my stomach has knots due to nervousness. Not even three bites into my meal, my phone vibrated the table.
I placed my half eaten pizza slice back on to the still very warm black plate. Before grabbing my phone to see, Aurora had responded. “ When are you able to start?” I read the message in her velvety voice in my head before quickly tapping my fingers on the tempered glass to respond.“I can make my way there as soon as tomorrow” before I could even set my phone down, Aurora had responded. “Prefetto, here is the address. 1357 White Ivy ct, castalian springs tennessee 37031” did i really just accept a job in a different state? I thought to myself silently as I set my phone down softly and continued to finish my meal.
I tucked my wallet back into my purse, as I pushed the door open with my shoulder. The air had become slightly chilly as the wind blew across my legs. I started in the direction of my car as my eyes gazed at the shops I had always been unable to afford. I stopped dead in my tracks remembering the amount of money I now have access too. I grasped the chilled modern golden door handle of the large glass doors and pulled it open. The store was overly bright and thick with the scent of their new perfume to the point my eyes stung. An older woman greeted me promptly, pouring me a glass of chilled champagne upon entering, extending the glass out towards me “ Can I help you with anything dear?” she asked sweetly, reminding me of my grandmother “oh, um.. I suppose I'm not too sure where to start..” I said shyly as the older woman grabbed me a black mesh shopping bag “ please allow me to help you pick a few things out then dear.” She looked at me and smiled as I shyly nodded and followed the women through the store.
