We were travelling what Sestra referred to as off-road now. Even this was a liberating experience. We always followed prescribed routes in Sector D. It was safer that way. But now we were nowhere near any roads. We could have turned left, right, gone straight ahead, or even back the way we’d come. I felt like the queen on a chessboard – suddenly I could move in any direction I wanted. Except, I couldn’t. I had to follow Sestra and she only had one thought in mind – to get to the next wall alive. I didn’t mind her singlemindedness though. I wanted to stay alive too. We’d travelled about six kilometres across fields when the sky suddenly began to darken again. I knew what to expect now, and looked around for a building that might be a shop where I – well, Sestra – could buy me new raincoat
