Chapter 1
Anna sat at her desk pouring over ledgers, checking column after column to make sure everything was entered correctly. She liked to do it all herself once a quarter and leave it to the computers the rest of the time.
She heard a deep, masculine laugh from outside. She looked up to see Christian, her husband, walking up the path with his Beta, Trent. They appeared to be joking back and forth. Training must be done for the day. She admired his chiseled form and thick brown hair. He'd barely aged a day since they had gotten together. Anna smiled as the memories took her back to that day. She had gotten her wolf early at 15. She came from long line of pure alphas. She was more of an Alpha than Christian as far as bloodlines go. But he held the title and authority as the title was passed down father to son.
She'd woke up early on there 15th birthday feeling feverish. She quickly realized it was her wolf trying to emerge. Her mother had urged her to stay home and rest, but she needed to run and get out into the fresh air.
She'd run and run, getting her fevered energy out. She felt awful as the day went on. That was when she bumped into Christian. He was a senior in high school and had just turned 17. He was the football champ and heart throb. She knew instantly that they were mates, but he hadn't gotten his wolf yet so he had no idea. He couldn't feel her at all. She'd marched right up to him and sized him up. She knew him, obviously, but he hadn't paid much attention to her since she was two grades below him. He'd laughed, wondering what this 15 year old girl was up to. The laugh was cut short when she grabbed him and kissed him. "Yup, you'll do," she said and walked away. He was her doting follower from that day forward. Absolutely smitten with her. When he got his wolf and found out she was his mate he was overjoyed. Not only was this girl that he already loved his mate, but the strongest she wolf in the region would be his Luna and bear his pups.
Shortly after her 18th birthday they were married and mated for the first time. Her wolf had nearly gone mad with impatience, but Anna did things her way. She was rarely dissuaded when she had set her mind to something.
They were married five years before his father had stepped down due to health concerns. Christian hadn't expected to be Alpha so soon, but he had been prepared for the role all his life. They were coronated and seamlessly took over their roles.
"Anna!" Christian called, breaking her from her thoughts.
"Upstairs!" she responded.
She could hear him taking the steps two at a time.
"Ah, I should've known," he chuckled. "Always working." He leaned in to kiss her.
"Someone has to keep this hip sailing," she replied.
"And there's no better person for the job than you."
"How was training?" she asked.
Christian was overseeing the training of new warriors. Each year, from the senior highschool class, students could apply to be part of the warriors. That would mean intense, 12 week training after graduation and a life long commitment to being a warrior of the pack. Dismissed only for severe injury or retirement. Retirement came earlier for them, due to the intense level of work they were put through, but it was still a full sacrifice of one's youth given in service.
"Oh it was fantastic! We have some really good additions this year. I'm excited. They've been putting me to the test and I'm one of the best we have." He grinned ear to ear. "We'll have the best warriors in the region."
"That's good to hear."
"I need a shower, do you want to join?" he said with a wink.
She didn't need another invitation. She put her pen down and sprang up to follow him.
They had a dinner that night with members of the pack counsel. The Alpha didn't make decisions on their own, they had a counsel to answer to. This was a formal dinner, but was not supposed to be business related. However, they often turned to business anyway. Anna was prepared to try to stear things away from those topics as much as possible.
She wore a slinky black, silken dress with diamond drop earrings and a bracelet to match. Her dark curls were piled on top of her head in an elegant updo. Christian appeared, dressed in his black suit and tie. His crisp, white shirt contrasted beautifully. He walked up behind her clipping his cufflinks. He kissed the back of her neck, letting his lips linger on her skin. Goosebumps formed instantly along her neck and shoulders.
"Christian, you're going to make me want you before we go downstairs."
"I'd take you right now if it wouldn't ruin your hair and dress."
She smiled. "After dinner, be patient."
He growled low, his eyes raking over her.
They walked down the stairs arm in arm, a picture perfect couple.
The evening was filled with good food, small talk and keeping subjects light. As the alcohol began to flow more freely the counsel members relaxed more and Anna could worry less aobut the evening turning into policy and decision debates. Anna was greatly admired by all she came across. She was beautiful, smart and quick on her feet. Christian looked at her with pride in his eyes as she talked to their fellow wolves. This was his Luna.
