Christian had done as Anna had demanded. He went out and personally made sure Anna took no blame for the attack. People wanted to know who had done it, then, but he had no answers for that. He even forced Vera to give a public apology when she'd healed up enough. Her story was that she thought it was Anna, but she might've been mistaken. She spat out her apology and hadn't been seen since.
Anna was happy with that progress, however, Christian was barely speaking to her now. He kept himself more than busy with the threats against their pack. When they went to bed he didn't say a word to her, even if she spoke to him. She knew he likely felt humiliated having to backtrack Vera's words that he'd initially supported, but that was his fault. He should've had her back right away. Vera shouldn't even have felt like she could get away with accusing Anna of attacking her. But Christian had opened that door and the fall out was his own fault. Still, she was sad that there was a rift between them again. She wondered if this was the beginning of the end of their marriage. Wolves didn't typically divorce or separate unless something catastrophic had happened. But perhaps they'd be an exception. Anna rolled over and watched Christian sleep. She still loved him, but all the hurt and betrayal had definitely dimmed that feeling. Her heart ached, wishing they could go back to being who they were before.
A couple weeks went by with no change in Christian's attitude. Anna was surprised to be summoned to his office one cold, rainy afternoon.
She entered slowly. "Yes?"
"Sit down," he instructed coldly.
She did as she was asked.
"There will be a full pack meeting tomorrow night. You will attend."
"Of course," she said. She attended all pack meetings. "What is it about?"
"I'm not going to discuss that with you." The look on his face was so cold, not even hateful, just... utterly lacking of any emotion toward her.
"Alright... is there anything I need to do to prepare?"
A smile crept across his face. "Dress nicely. Do your hair. Look your part."
Fear rose from her belly and settled into her chest. Something seemed terribly wrong. "Christian..." she began.
"Get out," he interrupted.
She was shocked. He'd never spoke to her that way before.
"I said get out!" he demanded as his fist slammed the desk.
Anna got up and left without another word. She went straight for the training grounds, looking for the Beta. She needed answers.
Trent was lifting weights with his headphones in. He didn't see or hear her approach. She tapped him on the shoulder when he'd set down his barbell. He turned with a smile on his face. It quickly disappeared when he saw who was before him. "Anna..." he said quietly.
"Can we talk?" she asked.
"Not here," he said. He glanced around. "Come with me." He led her to the training rooms. They were all empty. With another glance around, he waved her in and he quickly followed. "I'm sure I know what this is about."
"The meeting? I have no idea what's going on, but I know Christian will be vindictive."
Trent nodded. "He's going to announce that Vera will be working closely with him. She is a fox and he feels that her knowledge is valuable."
"She's a fox... that's the main reason to not let her work closely with him..."
Trent sighed. "I agree. I think she shouldn't even be here at all, but he won't listen to me. He's distanced himself from me for her sake."
"How did she weasel her way in like this?" Anna wondered aloud. "What happened..."
"She's a fox, that's what happened. She's doing what they do best. But Anna..." he trailed off.
"Yes?" he stomach sank.
"I would prepare for the worst... relationship wise."
"Surely you don't think he'd leave me for her?"
Trent ran his hand through his hair. "I wouldn't have thought that a month ago. But now? I don't think it's outside the realm of possibilities."
"I'm the Luna, you can't just toss a Luna away."
"You can, just not without major consequences. I'm not sure he'll find the consequences unbearable."
"The pack will... Does he think everyone will just accept her?"
"Anna I don't think he's thinking at all."
She nodded. It definitely seemed as though he wasn't thinking.
"I need to go. We've been here together too long. Do what he says for the meeting. Try to keep your head high and your dignity intact no matter what."
She simply nodded in response.
Trent left silently. Anna stood for a moment thinking. She needed to get ahead of this, but she had no idea how. For now, she decided to go home and prepare for that meeting. She would look her part. The Luna of this pack.
