Chapter 5

Anna woke and rolled over. She reached for Christian, but he wasn't there. It was early still, so she was surprised he was already gone. She got up and quickly dressed. Heading downstairs, it didn't take long for her to hear Christian talking and feminine laughter. In the dining hall she found Christian having coffee with Vera. She had just taken her hand off of his arm after laughing at something he said. "We really were the it couple weren't we?" Vera said. "Good morning," Anna said as she sat down next to Christian. "You're up early." "Oh I'm always up early. I don't want to waste the day in bed," Vera answered. Anna looked at Christian with a raised eyebrow. "Oh I just couldn't sleep anymore," he said with a shrug. "Vera, have you seen your father yet?" Anna asked. She looked nervous. "Ummm, no..." "You'll go today then? I'll arrange someone to escort you." "That's not..." Anna cut her off. "I won't take no for an answer. It's been years since you've been here. It's the least we can do for a visitor in the pack." Vera didn't argue. She looked awkward for a moment before excusing herself from the table. "Anna, are you jealous of Vera?" Christian asked once they were alone. "Of course not." "Are you sure? Because you looked like a jealous b***h just now." "What did you just call me?" Her tone demanding. "You heard me," he said coldly. "Excuse you, but you decided to sneak off to have an early morning talk with an ex girlfriend. I'm not at fault here. I am no jealous. I am ten times the woman she is." Christian got up so quickly his chair fell back. It clacked against the floor causing the few people in the room to look at them. He looked around, clearly embarrassed. He stormed out. Anna ate her breakfast like nothing had happened. After, she sent a man to find Vera and bring her to her father's home. That's why she was here, or so she claimed, so she might as well get on with it. The packhouse guest rooms weren't for long term living. To clear her head, she decided to go the gym. She changed into gym shorts and a sports bra. Once at the gym, she put her headphones in, selected some weights and began her sets. Halfway through her workout she felt a presence behind her. She turned to see Trent standing there, waiting to speak to her. She pulled her headphones out. "Yes?" "I'm sorry to bother you, but I heard that you and Christian had an argument about Vera this morning. I feel responsible." "Why would you?" "I let her stay. I should've sent her away so she could come back when you two were home to discuss it." Anna shook her head. "You did the right thing. There was no reason to turn her away. It's fine that she's here, she just needs to stop acting like she's 16 again and can be all over Christian." "I don't know if you remember her from school..." Trent said with hesitation. "We didn't really run in the same circles, but I knew who she was." "She's not good at giving up her things." "Christian isn't a thing that can be passed around," Anna replied. Trent sighed. "To her, he is. You took what was hers, so while she didn't want him anymore, she will want him now simply because she can't have him." "Gross." Trent chuckled. "Thanks for this," Anna said. "But I don't think we'll have any more issues. She'll get over herself and Christian will get over how exciting it is to walk down memory lane. That's all this is." "Alright, but I'll keep a look-out anyway." He left her to finish her workout. She finished with the weights and moved over to the treadmill. It felt good to wear herself out. Back at the packhouse she showered and put on a sundress, wanting to feel comfortable, but put together. She began unpacking their things from the trip. Just as she finished, Christian walked into the room. "Hey," she said flatly. "I'm sorry," he said. "You are?" He nodded. "I don't know why I got angry with you. I'm sorry. Can you forgive me?" She walked over to him and wrapped her arms around him. "Of course." "Thank you. I've been agonizing over it all day. I am so sorry." "Ssshhh," she said. "It's over now." She kissed him and trailed her hands down his body. "But you can make it up to me..." He grinned and shut the door behind him. They were late coming down to dinner, but no one paid them any mind. They had their dinner served. As they ate, Anna leaned against his shoulder. She enjoyed the closeness they enjoyed once more. After dinner, they went for a walk. Hand in hand, they walked the packhouse grounds. "I guess Vera found her dad, since she isn't around the packhouse." "I had her escorted, like I said I would," Anna replied. "I wasn't up early for her, you know." "No?" "I just couldn't sleep and my back was sore, so I went down for some coffee before heading out to train early. She appeared in the dining hall and we got to talking." "Its best she doesn't live in the packhouse," Anna said. She thought about what Trent had said. "Agreed. It's not for long term guests anyway." "I'm glad we're agreed on that," she said with relief. When they returned to the packhouse, Vera was there waiting. "Christian! You're back!" she squealed. "Do you need something?" "I think I'll stay here," she said. "I like it here." She looked at him with large, doe eyes. "Here at the packhouse?" he asked. "Of course!" "I'm sorry, but that won't be possible. You need to find a place to stay. You can't stay with your dad?" "I just want to stay heeeeerrree," she said with a pout. "Don't you want me close by?" she winked at him. "Tomorrow, move in with your dad. You can always move out later if it's not working, okay?" "But... well..." she stammered. "Understood?" "Yes..." she said finally. "See you tomorrow then," he said. Anna could feel Vera boring holes in her back as she walked away, hand in hand, with Christian.
