Chapter 20

Anna found that Damian was true to his word. Everyone was kind and her things were in her room within a week. She wondered how much of a fuss Christian had put up. She often wondered about her pack. She couldn't dwell on that or she'd lose her mind. Damian had included her in many of his Alpha duties. Asking her opinion and letting her see their financial records. She felt guilty for being privy to all of this. She didn't intend to stay, but now she had information he wouldn't want getting out. But that was his choice he'd made. She wouldn't spill his secrets and she hoped he knew that. Anna woke to rain pouring against the windowpane in her room. Lighting flashed across the sky, quickly followed by rolling thunder. Anna got up and dressed. She sat at the vanity to do her hair and makeup. The door to her bedroom opened. Anna turned, expecting to see Damian, however it was Hera. Damian's ex girlfriend. He had broke things off with her a few months before. "Can I help you?" she asked. Hera walked in and looked around. "You know I used to stay here... before I moved into his bedroom." "I didn't know that." Anna stood. Hera was taller and statuesque. Her features were perfect in every way. She had a beauty men would start wars over. "I'm sure he left that out... just like the fact that he and I are still together. Have you heard us at night? I do try to be quiet, but your room is right here." Anna felt sick. "No," she said simply. "Oh good, that would probably be painful. You know, after you husband rejected you and now your love interest isn't interested in you at all. I'm not sure why he's taking you in. Probably a charity case out of pity. He does that a lot, you know. Takes in the down trodden and outcasts." "I'm not down trodden," Anna said. "Oh? But aren't you? No pack, once a Luna, now rejected." "I'm not staying. I am just here until I figure something out." "See? Down trodden. Useless, really. But it's okay. You just stay as long as you need. It doesn't bother me at all, maybe you'll still be here when I'm made Luna. It'll be such a big party, you would love it." "You're going to be his Luna?" "Of course! We've been together so long, we've discussed it. The people want it, Damian loves me, it just makes sense." "I see," Anna said. "Oh, I see I've upset you. You poor thing. You thought Damian would fall for you?" "No, I'm not upset. Congratulations." Hera smiled wickedly and turned to leave. She left the door open behind her. Anna closed it and fought to keep her tears at bay. Why was she sad about this? She didn't want a mate anyway. Why did Damian lie to her? Did he want his mate and his lover too? Some Alpha's wanted that... especially if they'd been in a relationship before they found their mate. Anna was not okay with that. She never would be. She pulled herself together and exited the room. She went downstairs, not wanting breakfast, but she did want to talk to Damian. As soon as she walked into his office he looked up. "What's wrong? I can feel your distress." "I want to talk to my pack," she said. "Your old pack? Christian?" "Not him, but the pack, yes." "Why?" "I need to know how things are going. I was there Luna for a long time." "Do you have someone safe you can call?" "Yes." He pushed the landline phone over to her. "Go ahead." "Can I have a minute please?" she asked coldly. He nodded and got up. He left the office and shut the door behind him. Anna called Trent. He answered with a confused "hello?". "Trent, it's me. Anna." "Anna? Are you okay? Where are you??" "I'm with Damian... I'm okay." "For what it's worth, I believe you. About Vera. Many of us are suspicious of her." "How are things going there?" "Christian dropped all the defenses against the foxes right after he rejected you. He and Vera fight constantly, but he's still under her spell. He's infatuated." "No defenses? That's concerning." "It is, so my warriors and I are taking turns doing rounds without Christian knowing. Everything is such a mess." "Christian isn't the same man he was. I do wonder if foxes have more manipulative powers than we originally thought." Trent sighed. "I have been thinking the same thing. I'm just waiting for something big to happen. I think we're on the brink of something big." "Me too." "I'm glad you called. We've all been worried sick about you." Anna smiled. "It's nice to know I wasn't forgotten." "You never will be." They chatted a little longer before ending the call. She felt better having heard from her pack, but she was still upset about Damian. Damian came back in. "I have a question for you," he said. "I'd like to have dinner with you once a week." "I'm not sure I want to do that..." she answered. "Humor me?" "Won't your girlfriend get upset?" He looked surprised. "I don't have a girlfriend, I broke up with her." "She explained things differently." He leaned back in his chair. "Hera is such a pain." "She said she's been in your bed every night." "She has not. Don't worry about her. I'll deal with her. I don't have a girlfiend, does that change your answer?" Anna hesitated. He could be lying... but she decided to give him a chance anyway. "I will have dinner with you once a week." His face lit up. "You've made my day," he said. She hoped she wouldn't regret this. She would find out more about Hera.
