Anna made a point to listen to every conversation she could. To get a feel for how the other Alphas and Lunas felt. Especially how they felt about each other. It could be useful later.
Dinner was exquisite. Anna turned down a second glass of wine. She needed to keep her head clear. Damian didn't stop looking at her nearly the entire time. Even as he talked with others, she could tell his attention was on her. She leaned into Christian, her arm around his waist. She would not have another man thinking she could be dissuaded from her marriage. From her pack. Christian would have to throw her out and even then she'd still fight for him.
Dinner finished and now it was time to just mingle before heading to their rooms for the night.
Anna sat with the other Lunas listening to them talk about their lives. They were all very accomplished and did a lot for their packs. Just as Anna did. However, they had all started families. Anna felt a prick of longing, but Christian wasn't ready. He liked their lives and felt they had plenty of time.
"No pups yet?" one of the women asked her.
"Not yet," she smiled.
"How long have you been married?"
"Eight years this year."
"So long and no heir for you Alpha?"
Anna grew annoyed. It was clear that the Luna questioning her was trying to get under her skin. She kept calm and smiled sweetly. "My husband isn't ready yet and we're still young, we have plenty of time. We got together quite young, you see. We do practice plenty, if you know what I mean."
The other woman blushed.
The others laughed. "With a husband like that, I don't blame you," one of them piped up. She sneaked a glance at Christian.
Anna stood. "On that note, I think I'll see if he's ready to the retire for the night."
The Lunas, except the questioning one, giggled.
Anna made her way across the room. Christian was on the other side talking to an Alpha. She felt her senses prick and the hair on her neck stand up. A hand brushed her lower back for just a moment. It was so brief, Anna thought she might have imagined it.
Damian appeared beside her. "Enjoying your evening?" he asked in a deep, quiet voice.
"Yes. Your provision has been perfect. If you'll excuse me..." She tried to walk away from him. Before she got far, she felt his breath on her neck.
"Sleep well," he said. His voice dark with sultry under tones.
She quickened her pace to put space between them. She joined Christian and gave him a look. He understood what she wanted, finished his conversation and bid the men goodbye. To Anna's dismay he lead her to Damian.
"Goodnight, thank you for the wonderful evening. You've outdone yourself."
"Thank you," Damian said. "Even without a Luna, I can accomplish many things," he added with a look at Anna.
"Absolutely, we will see you tomorrow."
Anna felt his eyes on her as they walked away. She couldn't wait to get up the stairs and behind her bedroom door.
"What was that all about?" Christian asked. "I saw Damian undressing you with his eyes all night. What did he say to you before you came to me?"
"I don't know hat his problem is... he's been so odd. I don't remembering noticing him being this way before. I barely remember him at all."
"He wasn't at the last one, remember? He had been off on urgent business and you were too sick to go to the one before that. Its been three years since you two were in a room together."
"Oh, I remember that now. He just asked if I was enjoying myself."
Christians eyes looked her up and down. "I can see why he was looking at you. Come here."
Anna crossed the room to stand before him.
He pulled the zipper of her dress down and yanked it off her body. It pooled on the floor at her feet. "I'll leave my mark on you so that he can smell, sense and feel that I was all over you tonight." He picked her up and tossed her onto the bed. They slept very little that night.
At the meeting the next day Damina was the same as the night before. Attentive to all around him, but never unfocused on her. They all shared their concerns over the amount of rogue werebears in the forests in their regions. Bears were unstable, and as such, there were many rogues banished from bear packs. The bear's packs were miles away in the mountains, but rogues were seen in increasing numbers in the wolf regions. Something would have to be done before the bears outnumbered wolves. Bears were stronger, and in great numbers, they were no match at all for a whole pack of wolves.
At lunch break Damian stood behind her as people filtered into the dining hall. Christian had gone to the bathroom.
"You look exquisite," Damian said.
"Thank you, my husband agrees," she replied.
"I know he does," Damian growled under his breath.
Anna smiled smuggly. It would be obvious to any wolf standing that close to her that she'd been intimate the night before. They had very keen senses.
She moved into the room and found a place to sit. Lunch was served. Christian joined her and she pushed Damian out of her mind. Christian was the only man she wanted to spend any amount of time thinking about.
"The food has been so good," Christian said. "They must have top chefs here."
"I hear he's incredibly wealthy. Both old money and new. He can afford it."
"How do you know that?"
Anna shrugged. "Women talk. Especially greedy Lunas," she added in a whisper.
"Good to know," he said.
The lunch break ended and they all began to file back into the meeting hall. Another round of discussion was about to take place.
