Chapter 1: The Maid Who Defied the King
The autumn rain fell over the royal palace like a mournful song, washing the crimson rooftops and ancient stone courtyards beneath a curtain of silver. The towering walls of Hanyun Palace stood silent, hiding secrets that had been buried beneath generations of blood, betrayal, and ambition. Inside those walls, every smile concealed a scheme. Every bow hid a blade. Every whisper could cost a life. Han Seo-yeon knew this better than anyone. At only twenty years old, she had spent the last three years serving as one of the lowest-ranking palace maids. Her hands, once soft from helping her mother weave silk in their small village, were now rough from endless scrubbing, cooking, and carrying heavy buckets of water before sunrise. She had entered the palace for one reason—to save her family. After her father's death, debt collectors had threatened to seize their tiny home. Her younger brother was still a child, and her mother had fallen ill. Becoming a palace maid was the only way to earn enough money to keep them alive. It was not a life she had chosen. It was a life that had chosen her. "Seo-yeon!" A sharp voice echoed through the servants' quarters. She quickly lowered her head. "Yes, Senior Maid Choi." An older woman marched toward her with folded arms and narrowed eyes. "The Queen Dowager's lotus tea has not yet been prepared. Do you intend to have us all executed?" "I'm sorry. I'll prepare it immediately." "Hurry!" Seo-yeon bowed deeply before rushing toward the royal kitchens. The palace kitchens were already alive with chaos. Steam rose from enormous pots while dozens of servants hurried between wooden tables carrying trays of food fit for royalty. Despite the noise, Seo-yeon worked calmly. She washed the delicate porcelain cups. Measured the finest tea leaves. Poured water at the perfect temperature. Every movement was graceful, almost artistic. An elderly kitchen maid smiled. "You have gifted hands." Seo-yeon laughed softly. "My mother taught me." "If fate had been kinder, you would have become a nobleman's wife." Seo-yeon's smile faded. "Perhaps." But deep inside... She had stopped believing in fate long ago. Across the palace... King Lee Hyun sat upon the Dragon Throne. The ministers knelt in endless rows before him. The atmosphere was suffocating. "My King," Lord Kang Min-jae said with a respectful bow, "the northern province requests additional soldiers." Another minister interrupted. "The treasury cannot support another campaign." Arguments erupted throughout the royal court. Lee Hyun listened without expression. His cold eyes slowly swept across the room. Silence. Instantly every minister lowered his head. No one dared breathe. The young king rose. His black dragon robe shimmered beneath the morning light. "I did not summon you here to quarrel." His deep voice echoed through the throne hall. "If my ministers spend more time fighting each other than protecting this kingdom..." He paused. "...perhaps I should replace every one of you." Several officials turned pale. No one doubted his words. King Lee Hyun had already executed three corrupt ministers during the previous year. Mercy was not among his virtues. The meeting ended in fearful silence. That evening... The rain returned. Heavy. Cold. Relentless. Unable to bear another night trapped inside the palace, Lee Hyun removed his royal robes and dressed as an ordinary scholar. Only his most trusted bodyguard knew. "Your Majesty, it is dangerous." "Exactly." The king stepped into the rain. "For one night..." "I wish to walk as a man." Not as a king. Meanwhile... Seo-yeon carried an empty basket toward the palace herb garden. The rain soaked her pale blue hanbok within minutes. She sighed. "If I don't gather these herbs tonight, Senior Maid Choi will never forgive me." Lightning flashed. Thunder rolled across the mountains. As she hurried through the narrow stone path, she noticed something unusual beneath a large pine tree. Someone lay motionless on the ground. She gasped. "A person?" Dropping her basket, she rushed forward. A young man was unconscious, drenched from the storm. His clothes were expensive but simple, like those of a wealthy scholar traveling alone. His forehead burned with fever. "Oh no..." She gently touched his face. "So hot." There was no one nearby. She looked around desperately. "If I call for help, the palace guards will accuse him of trespassing." Without another thought, she slipped one of his arms over her shoulder. "You are heavier than you look." Struggling beneath his weight, she slowly led him toward an abandoned storage room near the herb garden. By the time they reached shelter, both of them were soaked. Seo-yeon found an old blanket and carefully laid him down. She lit a small oil lamp. Its warm glow revealed his striking features. Sharp jaw. Calm face. Long black hair clinging to his forehead. "He must come from a wealthy family," she murmured. She dipped a cloth into cool water and placed it on his forehead. After crushing medicinal herbs into a paste, she gently applied them to the scrape on his arm. Hours passed. Outside, the rain continued to fall. Finally... The stranger slowly opened his eyes. The first thing he saw... Was a young woman sitting beside him. She looked exhausted. Yet the moment she noticed he was awake, relief filled her eyes. "You're finally awake!" Lee Hyun blinked. For a brief moment... He forgot he was king. "Where... am I?" "In an old storage room." "You collapsed." "You had a fever." She handed him a wooden cup. "Drink." He stared at her. No one had spoken to him like that in years. No fear. No trembling. No desperate attempts to impress him. Only genuine concern. He accepted the cup. The tea was warm. Comforting. "You should rest," she said. "And next time, don't wander around alone during a storm." He almost laughed. She was... Scolding him? The King of Hanyun? "You sound like my grandmother," he said. Seo-yeon frowned. "Then your grandmother must be wise." For the first time in many years... King Lee Hyun smiled. Not the cold smile that frightened ministers. Not the cruel smile seen on battlefields. But a real one. One no one in the palace had ever witnessed. He looked at the young maid, unaware that this single chance meeting would change the course of both their lives. By dawn, he would return to the throne. And by tomorrow... He would command every servant in the palace to stand before him. Not to punish anyone. But to find the maid who had dared to scold her king.
