***Nicks POV***
“Hey, don’t look at her, just look at me.” I say calmly. “We don’t want to hurt you, we just want to know what’s going on.”
She looks at me but stays quiet. I sigh and think of ways to get her to talk but nothing comes to mind.
‘Why don’t you ask her, her name? Don’t think of this as an interrogation but as if you were just having a conversation.’
‘That’s a great idea, sis.’
“Ok let me start over. My name is Nickolas, I’m one of the youngest children of the alpha of the Golden Moon Pack and the girl beside me is my twin sister Nikki. What’s your name?”
She sits still, and I can tell she’s trying to decide whether to answer me or not.
“Miah.”
Miah… that’s such a beautiful name and it suits her perfectly.
“Thank you, Miah. That’s a lovely name.”
“Thank you, I guess.”
“Do you mind if I ask why you attacked this pack?”
She goes to say something but stops abruptly. Clearly not wanting to talk about why she’s here.
“You know, the more cooperative you are, the faster we can get you out of here,” I say.
“Get me out of here…” she chuckles dryly. “What just so you can reject me? Send me on my way?! No, thanks!”
“Woah, who said anything about rejection?”
“Please, I can see it clearly in your eyes!”
“I would never reject my fated mate!”
“Bullsh*t! Who would want a rogue for a mate?”
“You don’t even know me! How can you come up with these conclusions without the slightest idea of what I’m like!”
“Please, your family would never allow it!”
“My family can’t tell me who I can, and can't have as my mate!”
“Ok, everybody, just take a breath. Miah, Nick means what he said he would never reject his goddess' given mate.”
I keep my eyes trained on her but listen to my sister and take a breath, there is no point in getting worked up.
“Clearly, we got off on the wrong foot.”
“Sorry, I’ve just grown used to everyone telling me I would never be accepted by my mate.”
“It’s fine.”
“Okay.”
“Okay.”
“Alright, now that we have got that out of the way, do you mind answering our questions?”
“Nikki, I thought we agreed I’d handle this.”
“We did, but clearly, this isn’t going to be as easy as we thought.”
“I’ll answer your questions to the best of my ability.”
“That’s all we can ask of you,” I say.
“Alright, first question, mostly so I can prove myself right. All the rogues that were here tonight were after me, correct?” Nikki asks.
“Really sis?”
“What I want to make sure.”
“Yes, they want you.”
“Do you know why?”
“No.”
“Okay…”
‘She could be lying.’
‘Nikki give her the benefit of the doubt.’
‘Whatever you say, but I’m telling you if we don’t get better answers, this will have all been for nothing.’
‘Just give it time. I’m sure we will find something useful.’
“Ok so there’s one thing that I’m really curious about. Why are so many rogues working together?”
That was actually a good question, one that many of us want to know.
“Because he rallied us all together. If we tried to say no, he would go after our loved ones.”
“Who’s he?” I ask.
“Someone powerful.”
“That’s not much to go on.” Nikki huffs.
“I’m sorry. I want to help, but I don’t have much to go on.”
“Why did you join him?” I ask, I need to know. If she’s going to put my family in danger for some lunatic, then I need to know.
“He took my family, more precisely my little sister. He has her convinced we are doing the right thing. I don’t want to hurt anyone, I just want to protect her.”
“Ok. So, back to my other question, do you know what he wants from me?”
“I already told you I don’t know!”
“Do you know what his goal is? Please, you must give us something to work with!”
“All I know is he is power hungry, he wants control, power, and you, goddess knows why! I try to keep my distance from him as he gives me the creeps. I already told you I’m only working with him to make sure my sister is safe.”
“Well, that is at least something that I can work with!”
“Thank you for giving us that information, Miah.”
“Your welcome.” She looks me in the eyes, and I can see her many questions bubbling to the surface. “So, what do we do now?”
“First let's get you out of here and cleaned up. We’ll take baby steps.”
“Ok that works.”
“We should still try and figure out a bit more.”
“What else do you want to know?”
“Well, for starters, do you know someone named Logan?”
“We don't really like to use our real names. Do you have a description? Something more concrete to help identify him?”
“Absolutely, he has brown curly hair, gray eyes, and doesn't smell like a rogue. In fact, he's a gamma.”
“Oh, him, yeah, I've seen him around a few times. He tends to talk with the one in charge more than anyone else.”
“Well, that's something useful.”
“Can you describe the man in charge?”
“I’ve never really gotten a good look at him.”
“Damn, that could have really helped us…”
“Nikki, I think we got enough out of her for now, she must be cold, feeling gross and hungry. Let's leave it for now.”
“Fine, with that being said, I’m going to go to let dad and… I’m going to let everyone know what’s going on…”
I look at Nikki and see the skepticism in her eyes, she clearly doesn’t want to reveal all our cards to Miah, and I don’t blame her for being cautious.
“Miah, come with me, I’ll take you to the pack house and ask for some omegas to get you some clothes and a room ready. You shouldn’t have to stay down here.”
“OK…”
*** Nicks POV***
I guide Miah through the dungeon and onto the pack lands. The guard looks at me curiously, but I just shake my head, and he seems to understand and goes back to his post. I glance at my mate and watch as she looks around, clearly weary of everyone we pass.
“Nobody’s going to say or do anything to you.” I say breaking the silence.
“I know, but I’ve been taught to always remain on guard.”
“You sound just like Nikki, but that is a fair point. But as long as I’m around, no one would dare to try anything.”
“How do I know you won’t try anything? We’re mates, sure, but we only just met, and it wasn’t under the best circumstances.”
“That’s also a good point, but you already said you were put up to it, plus nobody was seriously harmed except for the rogues. So there’s nothing for me to hold against you or be angry about.”
She sighs and looks down at the ground. "To be completely honest with you, this isn’t how I wanted us to meet.”
“Neither but this is how it played out and, obviously, this is how it was meant to happen. The moon goddess doesn’t make mistakes.”
She flinches at the mention of the moon goddess not making mistakes. And I can’t help but wonder what she could be thinking about.
“Are you ok?”
“I'm fine, you're right. This is how it was meant to be.”
“You make it sound like it’s such a bad thing…”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean for it to sound that way. It’s just a touchy subject.”
“We could talk about it if you’d like?”
“Maybe some other time.”
“Alright… I hope you know I really am happy to have finally found you. Seeing my entire family find their mates so quickly, I was starting to wonder if I ever would”
She looks away as a blush creeps onto her face.
“You know what, maybe we could talk more. Get to know each other better after we get you cleaned up and into something more comfortable.”
“There isn’t really much for me to tell.”
“I'm sure that’s not true.”
“Maybe, let’s just see how things go for now.”
“Sure.”
We finally make it to the pack house and I quickly lead her up to my room.
“This is my room, the one across the hall is Nikki’s. And the one to the right of my room will be yours for now. I believe you’d be more comfortable having your own space and privacy instead of being forced into sharing mine right away. As you said, we are just strangers after all.”
“Thank you, Nick, I appreciate it.”
“Of course, now go shower. I’ll meet you in my room when you're done. This way you don’t need to worry about anything or getting lost.”
“Alright, I’ll see you in a bit.”
“See you soon Miah”
