Chapter One: Shadows in the Pines
Chapter One: Shadows in the Pines There were rules, and Luna Silverfang had broken every single one of them tonight. She wasn’t supposed to leave the territory alone. She wasn’t supposed to shift without permission. And above all, she wasn’t supposed to cross into enemy land. But rules were made to keep wolves in line, and Luna had never been good at following lines—not the ones carved in dirt, and definitely not the ones etched into her future. The forest called to her louder than her father’s voice ever had. It didn’t care about bloodlines or borders. Out here, she could just be—wild, free, unseen. The moon hung low and full, casting a pale glow over the pine forest that separated the territories of the Silverfangs and the Nightpines. The trees stood like silent sentinels, their needles whispering secrets only the wind could carry. In that silence, Luna ran. Her breath came in soft, controlled bursts. She wasn't running from danger—at least, not the kind most would see. No, Luna Silverfang was running for freedom, for the brief illusion of it that the forest granted her. Out here, among the moss and shadows, she wasn’t the daughter of an alpha, burdened with duties and expectations. She was just a girl chasing the wind. She shifted into her wolf form with practiced ease, white fur glowing beneath the moonlight. Her paws barely made a sound as they struck the soft earth. Every sense heightened, every muscle alive. For a moment, she felt like she belonged to the world, not to the cage her clan had built around her. She didn’t realize she’d crossed the border until it was too late. A scent hit her first—clean, sharp, wild. Not Silverfang. Not familiar. Her wolf bristled, a low growl rising from her throat as she skidded to a halt beneath a towering pine. Ears twitching, she listened. And then, a shape emerged from the shadows. He was tall, lean but strong, with dark, russet fur that shimmered in the moonlight. His golden eyes locked onto hers, calm but alert. Not a threat. Not yet. Luna shifted back into human form slowly, cautiously, standing with her bare feet sinking into the pine-needle floor. The wind tugged at her long silver hair, and her breath formed clouds in the cold night air. “You’re not supposed to be here,” he said, his voice deep and smooth, laced with curiosity instead of anger. “Neither are you,” she replied, chin lifted in defiance. A pause stretched between them. Then he smiled—a quick, unexpected thing that flickered like lightning and was gone just as fast. “Touché.” Luna’s heart pounded. She knew who he was now. The Nightpine heir. Kael. The ghost story her clan whispered about, the son of a rogue alpha who’d vanished after a bloody skirmish years ago. Rumor said Kael had died, or worse—gone feral. Clearly, the rumors were wrong. “You should go,” she said, not moving. “So should you.” Another silence. This one heavier. The weight of history, of bloodshed and broken treaties, loomed between them like a wall of ice. But neither of them moved. “Why are you really here?” Kael asked, taking a careful step forward. Luna hesitated. “To breathe.” That made him laugh softly. “Same.” For a moment, it felt like the forest itself exhaled. The tension eased just enough for Luna to lower her guard—but not her awareness. “You’re not what I expected,” Kael said, studying her. “Good,” she replied. “I’d hate to be predictable.” Their eyes locked again. Not as strangers now, but something else. Something dangerous. A distant howl split the night—Silverfang. Close. Luna’s eyes widened. “I have to go.” Kael nodded, but his eyes didn’t leave her. “Will I see you again?” She paused, then whispered, “That depends.” “On what?” “If I survive lying to my father.” And with that, she shifted, her white wolf disappearing into the trees like moonlight on snow. Kael stood still for a long time, the sound of her departure echoing in his ears. Then he turned and vanished into the shadows. The war may have carved walls between their clans, but the forest didn’t care. And neither, it seemed, did their hearts. --- Back at the Silverfang compound, Luna crept through the dense underbrush that led to the eastern edge of the border. She shifted back into her human form before reaching the outermost guard post. Her skin prickled in the night air, damp from the dew that clung to her bare arms and legs. The perimeter was quiet—too quiet. She crouched low behind a bush, scanning for movement. If anyone caught her this close to the Nightpine border, especially after curfew, there would be questions. She could lie. She always had. But this time, she wasn’t sure she wanted to. She darted forward, barefoot on cold stone, slipping into the shadows of the guard tower and up the slope that led to her family’s longhouse. Inside, warm firelight flickered against the log walls. Laughter rose from the dining room, low and masculine—her older brother, Ronin, and two of the senior warriors. Luna slipped around the edge of the great hall and up the back staircase, heart hammering as she reached her bedroom door. She closed it silently behind her, pressing her back to the wood. Her chest rose and fell rapidly, her mind a storm of images—Kael’s eyes, the heat of his gaze, the electric pull in the air between them. She had heard stories about him her entire life. A threat. A traitor’s son. A shadow. But none of those words fit the boy she’d just met. She didn’t know what he was yet. But her instincts—those primal, wolf-born instincts—didn’t warn her to run. They whispered something else. Go back.
