Chapter 4: A Familiar Scent

513 Words
Mrs. Liu Junyan patted Ye Chen Xi's hand, "Haha, why would I ever dislike you? Go on, take care." After bidding farewell to Mrs. Liu Junyan, Ye Chen Xi left the hospital. Mrs. Liu watched her walk away, sighing softly. Although they had just met, she could tell Ye Chen Xi was a good kid. She quite liked her. When Ye Chen Xi arrived home, she heard laughter and joy coming from inside. Her steps halted, and her fists clenched. When she was 17, her mother had suddenly passed away from an illness. Soon after, her father, Ye Shaonan, moved in with Su Lan and Ye Yuntian. Ye Chen Xi felt a pang of sadness. Ye Shaonan had become distant, even barring her from entering the Ye family estate. She later found out about his affair with Su Lan and the birth of Ye Yuntian. Ye Chen Xi took a deep breath; she wouldn't let them win. She composed herself and walked into the living room with a smile, "What's going on? Why is everyone so cheerful?" The room fell silent as everyone turned to look at her, especially Ye Shaonan, whose face darkened upon seeing her. Ye Yuntian walked over, linking her arm with Ye Chen Xi's, "Sister, could you accompany me to pick out a dress tomorrow? Dad wants to throw a birthday party for me soon!" Ye Chen Xi's smile froze as she recognized a familiar scent emanating from Ye Yuntian. Seeing her expression, Ye Yuntian's mood lifted. "Sister, I knew you wouldn't mind. I told Dad we didn't need a party, but he insisted." Ye Chen Xi remembered what Shen Xiyao had said. Wasn't Chen Zeyu away on a business trip? How come Ye Yuntian smelled like his cologne? Realizing Ye Yuntian's intent to provoke her, Ye Chen Xi retorted with a cold smile, pushing Ye Yuntian's hand away, "It's fine, if Dad wants a party, let him. But I have plans tomorrow and can't accompany you. Why not ask your friends?" Ye Chen Xi then turned and headed upstairs. "Stop!" Ye Shaonan's voice rang out. Ye Chen Xi halted, turning back to face him with an indifferent gaze. "Is there something else, Father?" Ye Shaonan sneered, "Do you really have something important tomorrow? Is it so difficult to accompany your sister?" Ye Chen Xi chuckled softly, "Well, my uncle just called. It's been a while since we last met, and he's sending someone to pick me up tomorrow. Can I decline?" Knowing Ye Shaonan was wary of her Uncle Dong Chenglin, who still supported the Ye family financially, Ye Chen Xi added, "Besides, won't you all be happier without me around? If there's nothing else, I'll go rest." Ye Chen Xi turned around, hiding her true feelings, and headed to her room. Once inside, she leaned against the door, closed her eyes, and let the sadness wash over her. Although she had grown accustomed to Ye Shaonan's cold demeanor over the years, seeing his doting love for Ye Yuntian still hurt. After all, she was his daughter too.
