Chapter 6: Meeting The Alpha's Sister

Vanessa blinked thrice. This had come as a surprise to her. Had he just said what she thought he said? She furrowed her eyebrows. He had just given her the chance to join his pack. A chance to start all over. She could learn how to use her powers, make new friends, prepare her revenge on Silas Ethan, stay with Levi, be free from Jake until… She was thrilled, though the last part chilled her to her bones. It felt like an adventure. Archwood was promising also. She had fallen in love with it since the day she came. Living here with the people would help her also. This was a dream come true. She had expected the opposite from Ryan. She wouldn't be surprised if he had asked her when she would leave his house. She had dreaded the moment and that was another reason she avoided him today. Relief washed over her. "Yes, I will join the Blood Moon Pack," she exhaled. "That's good. This is a better chance for you and like I noted in the woods. You don't know how to use your powers yet," Ryan said. Vanessa bit her bottom lip. He must have seen how vulnerable she was, yet he didn't leave her alone with Jake. If it weren't for him and his timely intervention… "Thank you so much for the other," she thanked him. "You'll join us and we can train you to be fit and also how to use your powers well. Welcome to Blood Moon Pack," Ryan said. Vanessa beamed. She would be working closely with Levi now. He wouldn't have to attend to a private business alone because Ryan wouldn't want any info to leak. The offer was sweet. Ryan looked at the silver-haired woman before him. He hoped that for once his instincts were right about her. He didn't know why he was fighting the urge to send her away after all he had only taken her in so she could escape Jake for just that night. He thought he'd give her to the village witch so she could learn under her but seeing her aversion to witches, he didn't want any issues. Also, for unknown reasons, he just couldn't bear to part with her so he had concluded that she would stay here with him. That way, he could ensure her safety and keep an eye on her. Ryan shifted the chair back and stood up. It was time for him to retire. Speaking with her had eased his burdened soul. "I'm going to bed. See you when the day breaks," Ryan muttered. "Goodnight Alpha," Vanessa teased him. Ryan froze She could use the name now. She winked at him. He turned around and walked to the door. He opened it and strode out, closing the door gently after him. Vanessa reached for the book she had wanted to read before Ryan had come in. It was at least an interesting conversation. She picked it up and felt her hand on it again. She would read it when she was less busy. She stood up, placed the book under her arm, and arranged the chairs as she had met them. Then she walked out of the library. Vanessa padded down the hallway into her room just by the left. She could sleep now. Her mind was no longer troubled and even if it was, Ryan had already let her into the pack. She was a fast learner, she could learn fast how to use her powers before she encountered any danger again. She closed the door after, releasing a sigh. She ensured she locked it. Then she moved to place the book on her bedside table. Vanessa stretched her muscles and slipped into the soft bed. Feeling the texture of its smooth material, she remembered how she had to sleep on cold grounds in the forest and the days she couldn't sleep for the fear of what would happen or if Jake appeared to kill her. On those days, she'd doze off and pinch herself to stay awake. What kept her alive was the desire to avenge her poor mother. She would have been long dead meat if she didn't train herself on something like her sleep, trusting people, and knowing when to run away. Vanessa laid down on the bed and threw the covers over her. She pressed her head into the pillow and closed her eyes. In a moment, she was asleep. _____________________________ Two days later Vanessa moaned. It was morning already. The rays of the sun peeked in through the slightly open window blinds. It gave the room an ethereal glow. She moistened her lips and rolled on the big bed. Vanessa jerked from the bed when she heard a creaking sound in her room. She rubbed her hands over her eyes so they could accommodate the bright room. Her hair was tousled. Her eyes widened when she saw the figure in a wheelchair. Vanessa creased her brows in confusion. She looked at the window. Had she come in through there? It was closed. She looked around the room and still couldn't conclude. Where did she come from? Vanessa turned back to her. Blue eyes to green. She studied her features. She had dark long hair, green eyes, pale skin, and a beautiful body wrapped in a pink silky gown. She looked twenty. It was just a pity she was condemned to a wheelchair. She looked so beautiful. Vanessa could feel her eyes boring into her skin. She wondered why the girl wouldn't speak. "Go-Good morning," Vanessa stammered as she broke the silence. Her breath was cold. It was snowing outside. No wonder she had slept in for so long. The cold nuzzled her in bed. "Good morning Vanessa," a soft, sleek voice replied. She had a beautiful voice too. Vanessa stared at her like she was a fairy in her room. "How did you know my name?" She asked after some seconds. "Who wouldn't know your name here?" The girl asked her back. Vanessa frowned. She had just come here and she hadn't met her but the lady seemed to know more about her than she herself. "Alright, I'll put you out of your surprise," she smiled at her. "I am Grace, Ryan's sister," Grace said to Vanessa's surprise. Vanessa was astonished. She never knew that Ryan had a sister. A beautiful one at that. What else didn't she know? "I wanted to see the woman who brought my brother out of his cage," Grace continued, her eyes roving over Vanessa. "No, you must have misunderstood it. What cage?" Vanessa argued. "There's no need to behave modestly. This Ryan is different. He changed since you came here. Ryan now comes out more often. Since you joined the pack, he makes sure he attends meetings too," Grace said. Vanessa sighed. The next day after he had told her, Ryan had announced her to the pack as their new intake. She had seen the eyes that almost complained that she wasn't fit to be there. However, they had kept mute. No one dared question him when he spoke. His word was the rule. They had to follow it to the latter. They could only talk about it behind her and when she entered, they all went silent. "How do you know this much if I haven't seen you before? I didn't even see you on my first day when I joined the pack," Vanessa said "The walls have ears. Moreover, I was sick and couldn't join the meeting because my brother insisted I needed to rest," Grace shrugged. "Everyone seems to be concerned about making sure you're comfortable. I don't seem to understand," Grace steered the conversation back to her. She had taken it wrong. There was nothing special about her to the Alpha and she didn't even have feelings for him. She preferred Levi and she'd stick with him if he had her. Ryan was her helper and nothing more. "You don't have to admit it. I have eyes to see and I am never wrong," Grace said. Wouldn't this lady get tired already? She seemed bent on getting something out of her but there was nothing she could give. The Alpha barely spared her a glance. He had only taken her in out of pity. Why did his sister think that there was more to this? He would have to introduce her to the pack of course. That was why he had come there. Why else? " The Alpha is simply being kind to me after my pack abandoned me. I had nowhere else to go so he took me in. There's nothing more to it," Vanessa shrugged. Someone opened the slightly open door. It was Levi. Vanessa heaved a sigh. At least someone had come to her rescue. "Hey Vanessa, good morning. I saw your door open so I said to check if you were alright," Levi lied through his teeth. He had heard Grace asking her questions and he knew that if he didn't go in. She would continue asking weird questions that would put Vanessa on the edge. Grace was full of questions. She could ask weird questions. Vanessa was just getting used to the surroundings. She could wait with her questions for now. Grace narrowed her eyes at Vanessa. She darted her eyes to Levi who winked at her. She knew what he was doing. Why did he have to come in now? "Hello, Grace. Good morning dear. This is Vanessa," "Vanessa, meet Grace, Ryan's one and only sister," Levi introduced them.
