Mira Donovan had always considered herself a practical person. She was good at math, enjoyed reading the occasional fantasy novel, and was rarely prone to daydreaming. Ravenwood was a small, secluded town, nestled between towering, ancient forests and the ominous shadow of the mountains that loomed in the distance. Life here was simple, predictable, and quiet-until everything changed. It was the middle of winter, and the chill in the air seemed to permeate everything. Mira had always preferred the warmth of her home, wrapped up in blankets and sipping hot chocolate, but on that particular afternoon, she found herself wandering the dusty halls of Ravenwood High's library. It wasn't that she had any interest in books that day, but rather, a deep sense of boredom gnawing at her. She had already read every book in the fiction section at least twice, and none of her friends were around. The library was nearly empty, the only sound the faint rustling of pages and the distant hum of the heating system. Mira had no particular aim, just strolling down the aisles, her fingers brushing the worn spines of old novels. As she reached the back of the library, something caught her eye-a small, unmarked shelf tucked away in a dark corner. It was out of place. The shelf was newer than the rest, the wood smooth and polished, and the books on it were unlike anything Mira had ever seen before. She pulled out the first book she could reach. The cover was thick, embossed leather, with strange symbols that seemed to shimmer faintly under the dim light. It was heavier than she expected, almost as if it contained a secret within it.The title, The Codex of the Lost, was written in gold lettering. Mira stared at it for a long moment, her curiosity piqued. The cover felt warm, almost alive, as though it recognized her touch. As if drawn by some unseen force, she opened it.The first page was covered in symbols she didn't understand-runic characters that looked as if they had been written in a forgotten language. She could hardly focus on the words. A strange, inexplicable feeling washed over her, a sensation as if the book were calling to her.Whosoever dares awaken the curse shall face the consequences of the eternal night. The words seemed to shift and rearrange themselves in her mind. She shook her head, wondering if it was just the result of too much time spent in the quiet library. But as she tried to turn the page, the air around her grew colder. Her breath became visible in the air. The room darkened, and for a brief moment, Mira thought she saw the shadows in the corners of the room move.A loud bang echoed from the back of the library. Mira nearly dropped the book, spinning around to find that the source of the noise was nothing more than the flickering of a light bulb. But when she turned back to the book, it had moved-The Codex of the Lost was now lying open on the desk in front of her, as if it had been waiting for her to read more.Without thinking, her hand reached out and touched the page. The room seemed to pulse with energy, and the whispers started."Mira..."Her name echoed through the air, soft and insistent, like a breeze rustling through the trees outside. She froze. Who was calling her? There was no one else in the room."Mira Donovan..."Her breath caught in her throat. The whisper was coming from the book.

Chapter 2: Whispers in the Dark
That night, Mira lay in her bed, wide awake. She couldn’t get the image of the book out of her mind. The words. The whispers. Something was wrong. She had felt it when she touched the pages, something ancient, something dangerous. But what could it mean? How could a book, of all things, have such an effect on her? She tried to ignore the feeling, to convince herself it was just the product of too much stress. But as the darkness of her bedroom pressed in around her, she couldn’t shake the unease. Around midnight, Mira heard it again. At first, it was faint, like the soft rustle of leaves against her window. But as the minutes passed, it became louder—closer. The whispers. Her name. They were no longer coming from the book but from the very air around her. “Mira…” She sat up quickly, the covers falling off her body. Her heart pounded in her chest as the temperature in the room seemed to drop. Mira felt it—a cold, invisible presence. Her breath came out in sharp, visible bursts. “Mira Donovan…” The voice was clearer now, sharp and filled with intent. Mira spun around in a panic, her eyes searching the shadows of her room for any sign of movement. But there was nothing there. The room was empty. Still. Silent. “You cannot escape…” The words came from everywhere, surrounding her, wrapping her in an invisible vice. Mira’s pulse quickened. What was happening? What was this voice? Was she dreaming? Or was this real? She quickly reached for her lamp and flicked it on. The sudden light did nothing to chase away the strange sensation in the room. But when she looked toward her desk, where the book had been earlier, her blood ran cold. The book was gone.
