Chapter 2: Day 2 Jared pressed the doorbell, then rubbed his nose nervously. A thin-faced young woman cracked open the heavy black door and smiled gently. She had shiny brown hair that reached to her waist, and wore a long-sleeved, formfitting, dark blue dress. Jared thought she looked like a model. This must be Shai’s sister, he thought. “Shai?” she called, but the man was already standing behind her and reaching toward Jared. “I’m so glad you came.” He ushered Jared inside, then looked him up and down. Jared had dressed up even more than usual. He wore a white-collared, button-down shirt with a skinny black satin tie, and a slim-cut black suit coat that he pulled out only for formal events in the city.
