JARED: Thank you for such a fun night yesterday. Your family was so hospitable and kind, and the food was outstanding. I really enjoyed myself. Hope you’re having a good day.
Jared sent the text to Shai at 9:03 A.M., then waited at the back of the TV studio, checking his phone every few minutes. No response came until 11:45 A.M.
You’re welcome. My parents love having guests.
That was all—no special thanks for their talk in his bedroom, or for Jared’s support. No, “Hey, whassup?” No recognition of their new bond or their plans to hang out together.
“What the hell?” whispered Jared out loud, disturbing the audio technician who told him to be quiet.
During the lunch break, Barbara from set design came and sat with him.
