CHAPTER1
CHAPTER 1 “I do," Harold said with a smile. This was all Emma wanted. To be with the man of her dreams, the only man she adores, the only man who knows every little detail about her. Harold West, her one true love. But suddenly, marrying him seemed wrong. She stared at her father in the front seat in the church congregation, beaming with a smile, and wondered how a man could be so greedy that he would blindly give his daughter out to someone she now desperately wanted to run away from only because of some minor setback in his company. “You may kiss the bride." The priest said with a broad grin and Harold circulated his hands around Emma's waist, pulled her in, and gave her the longest kiss he had ever given her in public. She broke the kiss and her eyes bored into Harold’s eyes. ‘Does he truly love me?’ Her eyes still searched his. She believed she knew Harold to an extent since they'd been close since they were kids. After he got back from college, she noticed there was something different about him. The way he carried himself, the way he showed her affection, and the way he freely discussed matters that bothered him with her. Things were not the same again. But she adjusted to his newfound personality. His change couldn't make her leave him. She was in love with him and the thought of that made her always leap for joy. It was a month ago when it all happened. Emma wanted to surprise her husband-to-be by visiting him in her blue sequin dress. She had a spare key to his house, so she opened the door, went into the house, and reached the room door when she heard loud moans. She paused as her heartbeat became faster than normal. She slowly opened the door, and what she saw almost made her lose her balance, and hot tears streamed down her cheeks uncontrollably. Harold was naked on his bed with her sister riding him with her eyes closed and lips parted as moanings filled the air. She walked out of the room and shut the door without being noticed, and she started to gasp for air. She quickly opened her handbag and reached for her inhaler. *** Emma got home and stormed into her father's study room. Her father smiled on seeing her, but his smile dwindled when he saw the sad expression on her face. “What's wrong, pumpkin?" Emma's father stood up, walked up to her, and dropped his hands on her shoulders. One thing he dislikes is seeing a hint of sadness on her face. “Dad, I caught Cassie and Harold together having s*x at his house.” Tears streamed down her cheeks as the thought flooded her mind again. Her Dad quickly pulled his hands away from her shoulders and walked back to his desk. “That's nonsense, Emma. Harold wouldn't do that." He started stacking the papers he was working on together. He didn't want to be placed in a position where he had to choose between his company and his daughter. “Dad, I saw them together. Cassie is into my…” " Cassie should get married to him then.” Her father barked, interrupting her, and her jaw dropped. She knew her father prioritized his company, but she didn't know he would pick an alliance over her. Her father sighed. “Listen, pumpkin. This behavior is common among young people and will eventually end after marriage. I'm sure this will stop once you both get married.” He tried to convince her but all she could see was that her father cared about his company more. LATER THAT EVENING After crying her eyes out in her bedroom. She walked down the stairs to get food for herself and on reaching the kitchen, she bumped into someone. She looked up and saw it was Harold. She forced a smile and attempted to walk past him when he held her firmly by her hands. “Don't walk out on your husband-to-be." He said firmly. He pulled her close to him and sighed. He noticed that she wasn't excited to see him as she always was. He sometimes thought of her behavior as being gullible. “Did I do something wrong?" Harold asked as his eyes searched hers. “Harold, you cheated on me, and with my sis…” " Wait. What!” Harold interrupted what she was about to say, then burst out laughing and this got Emma confused. " Listen, love. I don't know what it is you think you saw, but that couldn't have been me. I'm meant for you alone, love.” He cupped her face and gave her a light kiss on her lips. She still wasn't satisfied. " But I saw…" “You didn't know what you saw, love. And I would never do that to you. Not in this life or the next to come." He assured her with a smile and she nodded reluctantly. He was the love of her life, and she could only believe what he said. ‘He couldn't lie to me. He loves me.’ She was still worried, but she had to put her thoughts aside. She had always wanted to be Harold's wife, so no matter what, she'd stick with Harold. *** Harold and Emma walked into their matrimonial home with smiles on their faces. As they walked towards the stairs, Emma bumped into someone and looked up at him. He was the most handsome and strong man she had ever met. Her eyes met his squinted gray eyes, his long lashes and full eyebrows made her unknowingly put her lower lip in her mouth. His pointed nose, down to his rosy lips, and his brown curly hair that fell on his shoulders made her swallow hard. Alan noticed she was lost, staring at him, and began to walk out. ‘This is Alan Clay.’ She had only seen him on the news or in an article. He was famous and admired by all. “I'm sorry." She apologized but Alan turned on deaf ears as he walked towards the little bar at the corner of the living room. “You can go to the bedroom. I'll be with you shortly, okay?" Emma nodded like a kid and started to climb the stairs and Harold looked at how her waist swayed. ‘ I own you now, Emma. Isn't that nice? Harold beamed a smile as he knew that clueless Emma, a girl who loved him genuinely and someone who could easily bend to his will, was finally his. He turned to Alan and caught him staring. His face was deadpan. They hated each other, but Alan couldn't leave the house because his uncle, Harold’s father, said so, and out of respect for his uncle, he had to bear seeing Harold every single day. He hated Emma already because he felt anything or anyone who came in contact with Harold West had been contaminated or probably had to be like him. He poured himself a drink. “The good thing now is that the person you're staring lustfully at is your wife,” Alan said and gulped down the whole glass of wine. A smirk appeared on Harold's lips. “I know right." He muttered and began climbing the stairs. Emma went into the bedroom and stopped at the sight of it. It was a massive bedroom with towering windows that flooded the room with moonlight. She had been there before, but the decorations took her off guard. The floors were decorated with roses in celebration of their wedding night and this brought out a bright smile on Emma's face. ‘He’s thoughtful.’ She walked towards the bed and ran her hands through the blue fluffy sheets. It was her favorite color and was something she and Harold shared in common. Harold loved royal blue and sometimes red, and she loved the same thing. She loved it because it matched the color of her eyes. She sprung up to her feet and went to the bathroom to take a shower. She was exhausted and needed a nice bath before bed. She was done bathing, so with a towel tied around her chest, she went straight to the wardrobe to pick her nightwear and found a red lingerie behind the shoe stacks and picked it up. She blinked back angry tears as she knew who they belonged to. Harold went into the room and quietly shut the door while she sniffed. “You lied to me, Harold." She said as she backed him. “It's been a month, Harold. What is her underwear still doing in your room?” She half yelled as tears rolled uncomfortably down her cheeks. Harold sighed and began to remove his suit. “You're ruining the mood, Emma." He said calmly, but firmly, which was the least response she expected from him. He didn't seem to care that she found Cassie’s underwear there. He pulled off his clothes and was left with his shorts and Emma stared at his physique briefly. “Did you sleep with my sister? Was it even a one-time thing?" He walked up to her. “Listen, I would never cheat on you. For all I know, Alan could have slept with her in this room.” He said impatiently with one hand on his waist and the other rubbing his temple. “I'm going to ask him." She said and began walking out on him. “How dare you walk out on me?" He roared and she flinched. It was the first time Harold yelled at her. He couldn't hold it together again. She was being persistent and he hated it. He sighed and walked up to her and took her hands. "This person right before you is yours, Emma West.” He assured her proudly as he stressed her new surname with a smile which she returned with a nod. He quickly took her lips in his and she reciprocated immediately. She couldn't let some misunderstanding ruin their wedding night. Ever since she turned eighteen, she had been prepared, day by day, to be a good wife and a good daughter-in-law. A moan escaped her lips, and Harold's hands reached for her towel, pulled it right open, and dropped it on the floor. *** It was morning already and Emma had prepared breakfast for everyone. Harold came to dining dressed for work, and Emma stared at him from head to toe while he sat down. She muttered good morning, and he stared briefly at her as he took a bite of his toasted bread. “Are you going somewhere today?” She asked. She hadn't touched her food. He flashed a quick smile at her and continued with his food, ignoring her question as he was almost done. She chuckled lightly, as she didn't want it to look like she had a problem with him going out, even if she did at that moment. “It’s supposed to be our honeymoon, Babe." " Can you stop talking? I'm trying to think.” He said as his grip tightened on his hot cup of tea. “I can. But I just need to know why you would want to work on our …” “I told you to shut up." He said and slammed his hands on the table with the cup in his hands which broke into pieces, injuring him. Emma's eyes popped open in shock, and she sighted the blood on his hands and quickly picked up the table towel. “Here.” She attempted to put the towel on Harold's injured hands when he swung his hands, hitting Emma on her cheekbones. She gasped. " Oh My God! What have I done, Emma?" He panicked with blood dripping from his hands.
