Chapter 1: The Cost of Saying
The bank had restricted an account Julian hadn’t touched in three years. Someone had tried to change its details using his name, and suddenly, a ghost from his past was back to haunt him. He first noticed the problem when he tried to check the account on his phone. The message said access had been restricted for security reasons. He tried again, thinking it was a network problem, but the same message appeared. He had bigger problems to deal with that morning. The gas cylinder at home was empty, and Fiona had complained the previous night that she was tired of managing everything with almost nothing. He had promised to sort it out before leaving for work. The little money he had set aside for transport went toward getting the cylinder filled. He told himself he could walk part of the way and find a cheaper bus later. By the time he reached the warehouse, he had walked nearly five miles and arrived late. His supervisor was waiting near the entrance. "You know the rules, Julian. Late again, and I have to mark you absent for the day." "I’m here now, sir." "You should have thought about that earlier." Julian tried to explain, but the man had already turned away. By the time the shift started, he knew he had lost a day’s pay. He kept working anyway. There was no point arguing when the rent was already behind and the money in his pocket could barely cover food. During a short break, his phone rang. Daniel’s name appeared on the screen. Julian almost let it ring out. Daniel had been trying to help him get a trainee position in a technology company, but the previous day Julian had snapped at him when he asked about the application. You can’t keep turning down help and then complain that nothing changes, Daniel had said. Julian had answered badly. He was tired of being reminded of everything he had lost, even by someone trying to help. Now he picked up. "Did you submit the application?" Julian asked. "I sent you the link again. You still need to finish the form." "I’ll do it." "You said that yesterday." "I said I’ll do it, Daniel." Neither of them spoke for a minute. "Fine. Don’t come looking for me next year when you’re still lifting boxes here." The call ended, leaving Julian angry at Daniel and more annoyed with himself. He had wanted to explain that he was struggling, but somehow every conversation about his future made him feel like a failure. After his shift, he went to the bank. The queue was long, and by the time he reached the counter, his feet were aching again. He explained the restriction and handed over his identification. The bank officer checked the system and asked him to wait. She returned with a printed reference slip. "Someone requested a change to the contact details linked to this account," she explained. "That triggered a security flag. We need to verify the request before access can be restored." Julian felt even more frustrated. "I haven’t used that account in three years. Why would I be changing the details now?" "I can only tell you what the system shows. The request was received on March seventh." He looked at the slip. March seventh. The date brought back a period he would rather not think about. His delivery business had started going wrong around then, but the public collapse had come weeks later. At the time, he had believed the missing orders, unpaid bills, and disappearing money were separate problems that had piled up until he could no longer keep the business running. Now the bank was telling him that someone had tried to change his account details on a date that fell before everything came apart. "Can you tell me who made the request?" The officer shook her head. "Not from this desk. You’ll have to follow the investigation process." Julian folded the slip and put it in his pocket. It was not an answer, but it was the first clear piece of information he had received in years. When he got home, Fiona was in the kitchen. She asked why he was late, and he told her he had gone to the bank after work. "What bank?" "The one I used for the delivery business." "I thought you closed that account." "I thought I had too. They restricted it because someone tried to change the contact details." Fiona stopped what she was doing. "What do you mean, someone tried to change them?" "I don’t know yet. They gave me a reference slip. The request was made on March seventh." She turned her attention back to her work. "Julian, I don’t have the strength for another problem with that business. We have enough to deal with already." He wanted to remind her that he had not brought the problem home on purpose. Instead, he took out his phone and opened Daniel’s application link. He still had to finish the form, and he could not afford to lose another chance because of an argument. Fiona’s phone chimed in the kitchen. She checked the screen, turned it over, and carried it into the bedroom. Julian finished the first part of the application before his attention returned to the bank slip. He placed it beside his keyboard and read the date again. If the account had been untouched for three years, why had someone tried to access it now and why did the activity trace back to a date before the business even fell apart?
