The secret Den
Danny was excited to play with Grace. They always played everyday during the summer, meeting in their secret spot. It was an open meadow in the middle of the forest. They had found it a week or two ago and thought it was cool. He ran through the trees as fast as could, feeling like his lungs would explode! Until he reached their patch of grass. Grace was already waiting for him, she smiled as he tried to catch her breath. “I won again!” She shouted as she danced around. Danny glared at her, “Not Fair!” He said I’m between gasps. “You’re older, so you’re faster!” He shouted. She had just stopped dancing as she crossed her arms, “I’m only older by two days Danny, you’re just slow” she teased. Danny was going to tell her that she looked much older, but laughed instead. He poked her in the rib and she giggled. “Okay Danny, I say we explore! Dante said there is a stream somewhere. I say we find it and go swimming!” Grace suggested. Danny knew Dante was Graces older brother, but had never met him. He could tell by the look in her eyes that she missed him. He also knew that Grace loved to swim, his face lit up at the thought of the cool water. He nodded his head eagerly, and Grace closed her eyes to listen. Since they’re werepups, they can hear for miles, if they really tried. They weren’t as well trained at their parents and had to really work on it. Danny decided to help her listen. It felt like ages, but finally they heard it. A trickle of a stream. “Do you hear it?!” He excitedly asked his friend. She frowned and shook her head. “Turn your head to the left a little” he suggested. She opened one eye, but did it anyways. “I hear it!” She shouted. They both took off in the direction of the sound of water. It only took them 5 minutes, as their super speed is something they have harnessed well enough for short distances. Spotting the steam, Danny jumped in. Grace laughed as the water he sent up splashed her face. She tested the waters temperature with her toe before growling at Danny playfully and jumping in as well. Danny laughed at her growl, she sounded like a puppy. The two splashed one another, until their arms grew tired. They both layed on the river rocks next the stream to dry off. Danny looked to his left and saw a medium sized hill, he wondered what the stream would look like from there. “Grace, let’s climb that hill and see if we can see the stream from there” he said. She smiled and wiped the dirt off her legs. Grace looked around as they walked toward the hill, “Do you think we can see our houses from up there?” She asked. Danny smiled at the thought. “Maybe” he whispered, noticing her smile fall, he shouted “race you there!” as he took a head start. “Cheater” she called, as she took off after him. He beat her this time and smiled as he did his victory dance. Swinging his arms back and forth as he twirled. Grace was bent over, clutched her stomach as she laughed at his goofy dance. When suddenly she stopped. “Look a cave!” She enthusiastically announced. Danny stopped dancing as his face light up in awe. The view from the hill now completely forgotten. They both walked in, knowing it was probably an old wolf den that is now empty. Since they all live in actual houses now. “This should be our Den” Danny howled. Grace agreed eagerly. “Our secret Den, a place where we can meet to play!” She jumped with joy as she said it. They both laughed and we’re about to start cleaning it up when they heard their parents howl. “AWOOOOOO” both kids looked at each other and howled “awoooo” letting their moms know they were coming home. “Same time tomorrow?” Grace asked. “Duh” laughed Danny. They both raced back to the meadow, and hugged each other goodbye. “Remember, meet here and we will race to the Den” Danny said as he turned towards home. Grace giggled, “Prepare to lose again tomorrow!” She said she ran toward her own home. Danny entered his home, “mom, I’m back!” He announced as he sat at the table. He lunch was already waiting for him. His tummy growled at the scent. “Hi hunny” cooed his mom. “Did you and Grace have fun today?” She asked as she sat down to eat, with her plate in her hand. Danny nodded, as he took a bite of his corn dog, thinking of tomorrow.
