Another excellent fairy tale by McDonald, filled with contrasts; good vs. evil, day vs. night, selfishness vs. unselfishness, and put together in a very readable narrative. A witch "befriends" two women who are expecting, tricks them out of their children, a boy and a girl, and experiments with different environmental influences to see how they turn out. Sounds like a horror movie script, and I guess it could be easily made into such, but is much more readily and better enjoyed here. A bit dark at times, a little humor, and of course a happy ending.--Submitted by Philip Groff Austin
