Chapter 1 Sleeping with a stranger
*Ella's POV*
My best friend, Chloe Bennett, begged me to go to a party with her. I didn’t want to. But I’d already promised her.
The moment we arrived, I realized I didn’t know anyone. The music was loud, the lights were flashing, and everyone looked expensive.
Chloe disappeared to the dance floor within five minutes. She left me standing alone by the wall.
Then she came back, holding a glass with pink liquid.
“Here,” she said, smiling too wide. “Drink this. You look stressed.”
“Is it alcoholic?” I asked. I don’t drink
“Relax,” Chloe laughed. “It’s just a mocktail. I know you hate alcohol, so I got you this.”
“I’m not comfortable here,” I told her. “When are we leaving? You left me alone. What did you expect me to do?”
“I’m sorry,” she mumbled, not meeting my eyes. “Just drink it, okay?”
I took a sip. Then another.
That’s when the room started spinning.
“Chloe?” I called out, my voice shaky. “I feel dizzy.”
She grabbed my arm. “Come on. Let’s get you somewhere quiet.”
I don’t remember much after that.
She took me somewhere. I don’t know where.
“Stay here,” she whispered. “I’ll be right back to get you.”
---
When I woke up, there was a man in the bed next to me.
My heart stopped.
I scrambled out of the sheets and ran straight to the bathroom, locking the door behind me. I could hear him stirring.
I waited. And waited. No sound.
Then the bathroom door opened.
He stood there. Tall. Broad shoulders. Dark suit pants, bare chest. His eyes were cold, dangerous... and familiar.
I opened my mouth to speak, but then I heard voices from the bedroom.
I froze.
That voice. I’d know it anywhere.
“Where did she go?” Chloe’s voice. “I made sure she stayed here. I even sent the gigolo to her. Look at the bedsheet — there’s blood. That means she was here. She probably ran away.”
A second voice. Deeper. Cruel.
“Noah.” My ex-boyfriend.
“Don’t worry,” Noah said. “She’ll come home. That means our plan worked. Then we can be together, Chloe. I’ll chase her away for good.”
They left.
That’s when I started crying.
The man in the doorway handed me a tissue. I hadn’t even realized he followed me in.
I looked up at him through blurry eyes.
The stranger I supposedly slept with.
The man who had just heard my ex and best friend betray me.
