Prologue: Containment Breach
Containment breach As I run, the sound of my bare feet slapping against the cold and hard tiles echoes through the empty building. The blare of the siren pierces through the air and sends shivers down my spine. Every step I take feels heavier than the last, but I know I must keep moving. Suddenly, my momentum carries me forward and I bump into someone, but the urgency of the situation doesn't allow me to stop and apologize. The person shouts at me to stop and tries to give chase, but I have already turned the corner towards the hallway where I need to be. 32... 33... 34... "URGENT: Attention all employees. Experiment #074 has escaped. Last seen in sector B. Unarmed, but highly dangerous. A security guard is unconscious. Exercise extreme caution. Report sightings immediately. Stay in designated areas. More updates to follow." As my heartbeat races, my thoughts become louder and more frantic. I can feel my palms sweating as I frantically search for cell number 37, my eyes darting around in desperation. The announcement blares on in the background, but I can barely hear it over the sound of my racing thoughts. My mind is consumed with the urgent need to find her, to get to her as quickly as possible. Faster, faster, faster... "It is imperative that any non-essential tasks be put on hold immediately. Our top priority is to locate and secure Experiment #074. The safety and security of our facility and all individuals within it are at risk. This is not a drill. Please follow all safety protocols and instructions given by your superiors." I yell out "37!" as I bang my hands against the door. Quickly, I scan the ID card I had taken from the guard and insert it in the slot. After what feels like an eternity, the door finally opens. The woman next to me grabs my hand and starts pulling me towards what I assume is the exit. I can hear shouting, but the echo makes it difficult to pinpoint the direction it's coming from. My friend suddenly releases my hand and starts running. As we run, we pass through several halls until we finally arrive at a single hallway. At the end of the hallway, there's a door with a sign next to it. Although I can't read the sign, my friend runs towards the door and slams it open before rushing towards a file cabinet. I see that I'm standing in what looks like an office. I stand at the door and watch out for anyone to come. I take a look at the sign and notice the word "Office" written in bold white letters. I assume that this must be the room of the person who runs this place. All of a sudden, the person I was with rushed back to us, holding four folders tightly in her hands. Without any explanation, we start running again, picking up the pace as we turn left. But before we could get too far, we noticed three people dressed in white lab coats running towards us with a sense of urgency in their voices. "Experiment 074 and 037, stop!" they shouted, their voices echoing through the corridor. The unexpected encounter caught us off guard, and we had no choice but to stop in our tracks. As Lucy and I rush down the hallway, the sound of our bare feet slapping against the cold, hard tile floor reverberates loudly around us. I try to keep up with her as best as I can, but my legs are starting to ache and my breathing is getting heavy. Suddenly, Lucy veers to the right, and I almost trip trying to follow her. I see that we're approaching an emergency exit - the only way out of this building. If we open that door, a loud alarm will sound, signaling the start of the evacuation process. My heart races as we approach the door, knowing that our escape is just within reach. As we sprint towards the door, the sounds of angry shouting grow increasingly louder and my breaths become more labored with each step. My body is not used to this much exertion and I can feel my muscles straining under the constant demand for more energy. Finally, we reach the door and I prepare myself for the impact, knowing that my shoulder will take the brunt of it. I push forward with all my might, feeling the sharp pain of contact reverberating through my body. Despite the discomfort, we keep running, our feet pounding against the pavement as we flee the scene. The footsteps of our pursuers gradually fade away, leaving us alone in the quiet of the outside. But even though the immediate danger has passed, the deafening wail of the facility's alarm continues to ring in our ears, a constant reminder of the chaos we've left behind. As I shout out to Lucy to slow down, she gradually reduces her pace, and we both come to a stop. "Lucy! Slow down! We need to rest a little and come up with a plan of where to go now!" I gasp for breath, leaning forward and placing my hands on my knees. Lucy leans against a nearby tree, her chest heaving up and down. I take this moment to look around and appreciate our surroundings. The forest is dense and lush, with tall trees casting long shadows on the ground. The air is cool and moist, and I can hear the sound of a nearby river flowing gently. I take a deep breath and close my eyes, feeling the calmness of the surroundings seeping into my soul. As I look around, I realize that we are in the heart of a dense forest, far from any civilization. The fresh air feels invigorating, and the greenery around us is simply breathtaking. The leaves are a vibrant shade of green, and the sky above us is a beautiful shade of blue, with a few fluffy white clouds drifting by. The fragrance of the forest is a mix of fresh pine and damp earth, and it's like nothing I've ever smelled before. I can hardly believe that I took the beauty of nature for granted before getting stuck in the facility. For the first time in years, I'm experiencing the outdoors, and it feels like a dream come true. As I take in the sights and sounds around me, I realize how much I've missed being in the open air. As I catch my breath, I turn to look at Lucy, who has been my companion through thick and thin in the facility. We lock eyes, and in that moment, we share a sense of awe and wonder at what we are experiencing. Just a few minutes ago, we were confined to our cells, fearing punishment if we were caught. And now, we're standing in the middle of a forest, surrounded by the beauty of nature. As the realization sinks in, a wave of joy and shock washes over me, and I can't help but break into laughter. Tears gather in my eyes as I marvel at the wonders of the world around me. It's an experience that I will cherish for a long, long time. Lucy and I finally made it out of that horrible place, and we both couldn't help but burst into a fit of laughter. The relief of being free after months of captivity was overwhelming, and tears of joy began to flow down my face as I hugged her tightly. I couldn't believe our luck - we had managed to escape without being caught. As we stood there, the soft and cool grass beneath our feet, I took a moment to fully appreciate the feeling of freedom. The sun was warm against my cold and pale skin, and I couldn't help but close my eyes and tilt my head back to bask in its warmth. But as I did, I felt the tears come again. This time, they were tears of gratitude for finally being able to feel the sun on my face after being locked up in a dark containment cell for so long. When I opened my eyes, I saw that Lucy was crying too. I gently grabbed her shoulders and shook her slightly, trying to contain my own emotions as I did. We had been through so much together, and the fact that we had both made it out alive was a miracle. As we stood there, the gentle breeze carried Lucy's black hair into her face, covering her eyes. Without thinking, I reached out and brushed it away, tucking it behind her ear. We both took a moment to fully come to terms with our escape, and as we did, the branches and leaves seemed to dance in the wind, as if celebrating our newfound freedom. In this moment, I take a moment to admire Lucy's appearance and notice some new details about her. Her skin has a radiant, coppery glow that looks absolutely stunning. Her chocolate-colored eyes seem to sparkle with a newfound vibrancy under the light. As I run my hand over her skin, I can feel how silky smooth and soft it is to the touch. However, I also notice a small cut on her cheek and a bruise on her arm, which makes me wonder if everything is okay with her. As soon as I realize that I can't hear the alarm anymore, my joy is quickly replaced with anxiety. The silence is too deafening. I look around, trying to get a sense of my surroundings. I see nothing but trees, tall and imposing, their branches stretching towards the sky. The forest seems endless, and I feel trapped, like an animal caught in a cage. "Okay, we should pick a direction and stick to it," I say, my voice trembling a little. "We might find a road or a town." My companion nods, her face a mask of determination. "You're right. Okay. We don't have much time before they start looking for us. Let's go this way." She points to the right, and I follow her gaze. "If we start to get tired, then we can find a tree to sleep in or something." I nod my agreement before grabbing her hand. Her skin is warm and reassuring, and I feel a little less alone. We start walking, our pace brisk but not frantic. I let go of her hand after a while, but I stay close to her, watching for any sign of danger. The forest is eerily quiet, and I can't help but feel that we're being watched. I hope we find a town or something soon. We have no idea what kind of creatures are hiding in this forest, and we have no source of food or clean water. I can't believe this is it. The start of our new beginning.
