Chapter 3: Shattered Illusions

337 Words
Zephyra hummed softly as she walked beside Thorian after school. The afternoon sun painted the sky in hues of gold and pink, casting long shadows across the cobblestone path. Despite the stress of classes, her heart felt light in Thorian's presence. “Want to grab a coffee?” Thorian asked, pointing to a cozy café ahead. Zephyra smiled. “Why not? I could use a break.” The warm aroma of coffee greeted them as they entered. The café was lively but peaceful, filled with quiet conversations and the soft clatter of cups. They found a small table by the window and were about to sit when Zephyra froze. Her eyes locked onto a scene that shattered her world—a familiar man, her father, leaning across a table to kiss a woman who was definitely not her mother. Zephyra's breath caught in her throat. The cheerful ambiance of the café faded into a dull hum. Her legs felt like stone, unable to move. “Zephyra?” Thorian's voice was gentle but concerned. “What’s wrong?” She didn’t respond. Her eyes filled with tears that spilled over uncontrollably. Thorian followed her gaze and instantly understood. His jaw clenched, but he kept his composure. “Let’s get out of here,” he whispered, grabbing her trembling hand. Outside, the cool air hit them, but Zephyra barely noticed. Her sobs broke free, loud and raw, as Thorian pulled her into his arms. She clung to him, shaking. “I don’t understand,” she choked out between sobs. “Why... Why would he do that?” Thorian held her tighter, his voice steady. “I’m so sorry, Zephyra.” Her mind swirled with confusion, disbelief, and heartbreak. She couldn't reconcile the man she admired with the one she'd just seen. As her sobs subsided into quieter whimpers, Thorian didn't let go. He stood there, silently offering her the strength she needed but couldn't find on her own. And in that moment, Zephyra knew—her life had changed forever.
