Chapter Three

“No” Jane said narrowing her eyes. Her fear was quickly turning into anger. Why did it seem like every guy she’d ever met thought he could instantly control her, she was tired of it. She was going to show him he couldn’t walk on her! “Fine” Then without another word he grabbed her by the waist and threw her over his shoulder. “PUT ME DOWN!” She yelled as loud as she could. She kicked her legs and flailed her arms hoping to shake free from him. He continued up the huge spiral staircase as if she barely weighed a pound. Exhausting herself and feeling a little sick she tried to see where he was carrying her. At the top of the stairs there were three doors. He looked at the right door and then to the left door as if he was trying to make a decision. “Are you going to be a good girl and do as I say?” He mused as he tightened his hold on her. “Are you nuts? I’m not doing anything YOU say!” She snorted, kicking her legs again. “Okay then.” He chuckled as if amused by her attempts to free herself. Cadmus took a key out from behind a picture frame on the wall and used it to unlock the middle door. Behind the door was yet another staircase, up the staircase he took her, up to an attic it seemed. There were boxes and ancient looking trunks along the walls covered with dust and spider webs. He soon arrived to another door with a small room beyond it, there was her new cell. It was a small half moon shaped room with three big windows along the curved wall. The only piece of furniture in the room was a small bed, he tossed her onto it and smiled down at her. “I’ve been waiting a long time for you.” His smile was eerie, his eyes were like dark pits, even the shine from the moon outside added no light to them now. He was a monster, she thought, why did she go with him? He seemed so nice in the beginning, well he didn’t seem crazy. What was it he’d said before his entire demeanor had changed. She had witch blood? He was absolutely looney! She was ready to fight, she was prepared to die before she let him touch her, but instead of trying anything or even saying anything else he just turned around and walked out. She heard him lock the door from the other side, she heard his footsteps slowly get further and further away, she could hear some creaks from the stairs, and then other door slammed shut too. She was wide awake listening for any sounds of his return, it wasn’t until she saw the light of dawn that she finally surrendered and fell asleep. She must have had a rough dream because she awoke in a sweat on the floor. She’d fallen off the bed and hadn’t even woke up, she wished she could say that it was from her traumatic night, but that was actually quite common for her. She’d never slept well, her nights had been like that for as long as she could remember. She was squinting as her eyes adjusted to the bright light coming through the windows. She pulled the quilt off the bed and over herself. She decided she’d just stay there on the floor. The sound of footsteps made her change her mind and jump up though, she backed herself into the furthest corner from the door and watched. She heard his steps stop, she heard him unlock the door, he waited a moment before opening the door as if expecting an assault. He peered in and stared at her like it was the first time he’d seen her, he almost looked shocked to see her there. They just stared at each other for a long moment, perhaps it was because neither of them had really seen each other well last night. Cadmus had very short black hair, a perfectly trimmed beard, and he was barefoot again. She wondered if he didn’t like shoes? “Would you like to come downstairs to eat?” He asked gently. She stared at him bewildered, was he that crazy, to think of her like some kind of guest? She was his prisoner after all, now he wanted to be kind? She wondered if she should go with him, but what if he suddenly became hostile again? “I’m not hungry.” She lied. “Fine.” He mumbled, slamming the door shut. She heard him stomp back downstairs. She could hear him yelling at someone throughout the house, it almost sounded like he was arguing with someone. She wondered if there were others here or if it was in his head and he was honestly crazy.. His footsteps came again when it started to get hotter from the bright sun outside. It was mid-September but still really hot out. He opened the door and entered the room with less hesitation this time, again she’d pressed herself against the furthest wall. He walked towards her and she closed her eyes not sure what she should expect. She heard a strange noise and opened her eyes to see him opening her windows. Of course she’d tried to, but it was like they were glued shut. “Aren’t you afraid I’ll jump out?” She questioned, not really sure why she’d spoken, she looked at the floor. “You are three stories up and and there’s fifteen wolves out there.” He said, as a matter of fact. “I still might do it.” Jane challenged, looking up into his golden brown eyes. She tried her hardest to keep eye contact, she wanted to prove to him and herself that she would not be bullied. She couldn’t help noticing his beard had bits of red on the edges, he had high cheek bones, and he had an almost olive skin tone. He was almost too good looking. She had to remind herself of the little fact that he had locked her in a tower like the villain in a fairytale, he was definitely not Prince Charming. He stared into her eye’s for a moment, possibly trying to judge if she’d meant it or not. She suddenly thought of Garret, she wondered if he’d bother to come back for her or maybe he’d tell someone that she was out there? He could lie and say she got mad and got out of the car! He could say whatever made him look better, whatever made him feel better, anything as long as he told someone she had never made it back. She frowned realizing there really wasn’t anyone who would miss her, her job would probably assume she quit, they wouldn’t go as far to file a missing person’s report. She was in a new town with no friends, no family, and only a couple people had even gotten to know her in the last nine weeks since school had started. Her best friend had quit and run off with some guy she’d just met. She felt like life was really letting her down lately. Her best friend was always running off with a new guy, when the relationship tanked she’d show back up like nothing had happened, that was Rachel. She’d always been that way even in sixth grade when they first met. She looked back up when Cadmus grunted, then he just walked out leaving the door open. Jane waited until she heard him go all the way down the stairs before she moved even an inch from the wall, she didn’t understand why he was letting her out of the bedroom now. She walked slowly trying not to make any noise on the stairs, if he was busy elsewhere or outside, maybe she could slip outside and find her way back to the field, then she could follow the road back to town. Maybe he was letting her go?
