Chapter 3

1744 Words
~Ivy My heart shattered into a million pieces as I watched Cameil lying there with Lysander. Everything felt like a dream. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. My best friend of ten years was cheating with my husband. I searched for tears, but they refused to fall. Instead, they remained trapped at the corners of my eyes as I slowly walked into the lounge. There wasn’t even an atom of remorse on their faces. Especially Lysander. He stood there perfectly calm, without the slightest expression of guilt on his face. I walked further into the lounge and stared directly into his eyes. “What on earth are you both doing, Lysander?” My voice came out thin and cracked. Cameil attempted to speak, but Lysander stopped her. Then he stepped forward. “I should be the one asking you that question. What on earth are you doing in this house?” His voice carried a threatening undertone that sent a strange chill through my blood. But I didn’t care. Instead, I stepped closer to him, anger taking control of me. “We just got divorced, Lysander, and you’re already cheating on me with my best friend?” My voice rose. “Have some shame, Xander!” At that moment, I no longer cared about how betrayed I felt or what rights I had in the Steel mansion. All I wanted was an answer. Lysander opened his mouth to speak, but I cut him off. “Tell me! Is she the third wheel?” I pointed toward Cameil. “Tell me if Cameil was behind all of this! Give me some answers, Lysander!” I yelled, refusing to take my eyes off him. “I don’t need to tell you that we are divorced, which means whatever we had is over.” He paused and reached for Cameil, who had already dressed herself. Then he continued. “Cameil has been my backbone ever since I was forced to marry you. She gave me everything you couldn’t give me. So why shouldn’t I get her pregnant and make her my wife?” My heart froze. What did he mean? Was he saying Cameil was already pregnant with his child? Lysander and I might have been divorced, but I still couldn’t stand the thought of watching him move on with another woman. Not just any woman. My best friend. I turned toward Cameil. Her face was filled with remorse. “And you…” My voice trembled. “You cheated with my husband. My ex-husband. Was that really your priority?” Cameil remained silent. “I trusted you, Cameil!” My voice broke as the tears finally began gathering in my eyes. “I told you my secrets. I shared all my pain and happiness with you. I did everything you ever asked of me, and this is how you repay me?” I pointed at her with trembling hands. “By sleeping with my husband?” I didn’t care that Lysander was standing beside me anymore. I had been hurt enough. This was worse than the divorce papers. I had to let it out. I had to cry. I had to scream. Cameil remained silent. There was remorse written all over her face, but her body language told me something completely different. She didn’t regret what she had done. “Enough, Ivy!” Lysander’s voice suddenly cut through mine. “Cameil and I have come too far to back out now. We are divorced, which means I didn’t cheat on you.” He spoke calmly, almost as if none of this mattered. “Why did you come back to my house? Take whatever belongs to you and get the f**k out of here.” “I refuse to accept your claims, Xander!” My voice trembled. “You know I love you, but you divorced me. It hasn’t even been twenty-four hours since our divorce, and you’ve already chosen my best friend?” Lysander looked at me coldly. “Cameil and I have been in a relationship for seven years. We loved each other even before you married me.” “I know that, Lysander!” I cut him off immediately. “You both dated, but you broke up the moment you fell into a coma. She was asked to carry out the insemination, but she refused. Now she’s back in your life after I went through the procedure!” “You’re wrong, Ivy.” Cameil finally spoke. Her voice carried a remorseful tone. “I rejected the insemination because I had papers in Germany. I was still studying for my B.Sc. in Medicine. My father wanted me to leave as soon as possible…” “No need for explanations, Cameil.” Lysander cut her off. “I forgave you for abandoning me, and we got back together five years ago.” He turned his cold gaze toward me. “The servants will bring your luggage down in no time. Take your belongings and leave this house.” His phone suddenly rang. Without another word, Lysander walked away to answer it. I stood there, watching him disappear. Cameil slowly sat on the sofa and crossed her legs. She looked completely comfortable. She was used to this kind of luxury, wasn’t she? Her father was the President’s P.R. officer, so why wouldn’t she feel at home stealing my husband after abandoning him five years ago? Perhaps this was what fate wanted. Maybe I was never destined to be with Lysander. There was no point in another confrontation. I simply needed to take what I had come for and leave. One of the servants soon brought my luggage downstairs. There were tears in her eyes. I could tell she didn’t want me to leave. But I had to. I grabbed my luggage and looked around the home Lysander and I had shared. So this was it. I was leaving the man I loved behind for my fake best friend. What had to happen had happened. Even if I cried from now until eternity, Lysander would never take me back. I turned around to leave. But Cameil stepped directly into my path. The remorseful expression she had been wearing was completely gone. “Excuse me, Cameil. I have to leave.” I tightened my grip around my luggage. But before I could move, she kicked one of my bags away. I turned toward her angrily. “What is the meaning of this, Cameil? Haven’t you done enough?” “I only wanted to remind you of something.” Her expression became cold. “Never mention to Xander that I’m infertile.” My heart skipped. “You know all my secrets, and I know all of yours.” Her eyes carried a threatening glint. I stared at her. “I’m not stupid enough to tell Lysander that you’re not pregnant.” I bent down and picked up my luggage. “Instead, I’ll be happy when he eventually learns the truth himself.” I looked directly into her eyes. “I mean, your Tommy will rise, won’t it?” Her face changed. “Lysander will eventually find out about your baby.” I picked up the bag she had kicked away. “Now, excuse me.” I attempted to walk past her. But suddenly, Cameil grabbed my hair. Hard. “Let go of me, Cameil!” I screamed in pain. But she tightened her grip. “I only became your friend ten years ago because I was having problems with my father!” Her voice was filled with bitterness. “I needed someone I could stay close to. Someone whose roof I could live under.” My heart sank. “Five years ago, when I finally reconciled with my father, I wanted to end this stupid friendship.” She pulled my hair even harder. “But I kept pretending because I loved Lysander!” I gasped in pain. “I confessed my past relationship with Lysander to you so you would believe I was still loyal to this friendship.” Her voice became colder. “But now that he has finally divorced you, I don’t see any reason to keep pretending.” I froze. Her words hurt more than the pain in my scalp. So she had never been my friend? For ten years… None of it had been real? “Let go of me, Cameil!” I struggled against her grip. “Or I’ll tell Lysander the whole truth!” I threatened her, hoping she would release me. Instead, she smirked. “Not when I convince Lysander that you’re a murderer.” Her words left me baffled. A murderer? Before I could even process what she meant, she suddenly released me. I stumbled forward, desperately trying to catch my breath. Then Cameil screamed. “Lysander! Come and help me!” Her voice echoed through the mansion. “Xander! Please, help me!” I turned around immediately. And what I saw made my blood run cold. Cameil had a knife in her hand. Before I could understand what she was doing, she plunged it into her own belly. “Cameil!” A voice screamed from behind me. I turned. Lysander was standing there with his eyes widened in horror. But then his gaze dropped to my hands. I was holding the knife. The very same knife Cameil had used to stab herself. It was now in my hand. My mind went blank. “No…” Lysander rushed toward us and shoved me away. I stumbled backward and hit my head against the nearest sofa. Pain shot through my skull. Cameil fell to the floor, clutching her stomach. Then she pointed toward me. “She did this…” Her voice was weak. Before her eyes closed, she repeated, “She did this.” “No!” I struggled to sit up. “Lysander, I didn’t—” “Santos! Jakub! Chris!” Lysander’s furious voice thundered through the mansion. “Get the car ready and grab this woman!” His two bouncers, Santos and Chris, immediately rushed toward me. “Put her in the car!” They grabbed me and pulled me to my feet. I struggled against them, completely helpless. My mind was spinning. Cameil had stabbed herself. Yet I was the one holding the knife. Lysander believed I had done it. And there was nothing I could do to prove otherwise. Whatever the future held for me…I had no idea.
