Chapter 1
“Congratulations, Mrs. Steel. You’re three weeks pregnant with a baby boy!”
The doctor said those words while handing me the results of my pregnancy test.
For a moment, I simply stared at her, unable to process what I had just heard. Then, slowly, a smile spread across my face.
I’m finally PREGNANT!
I couldn’t contain my joy as I quickly opened the results sheet again, checking it for the umpteenth time to make sure the doctor hadn’t made a mistake.
But she hadn’t.
It was positive.
I was truly pregnant.
Today was my fifth wedding anniversary with Lysander Steel, the CEO of Steel’s Group. I had already planned to celebrate our anniversary, but it seemed another celebration had been added to the occasion.
My unborn child.
I was still lost in my thoughts and imaginations when the doctor’s voice brought me back to reality.
“I must say, this baby is nothing short of a miracle. But you have to take care of him with everything you have. Mind you, you must stay away from anything involving transfusions or surgical procedures, as they could jeopardize the health of your unborn child. And considering your condition, your chances of becoming pregnant again are very slim.”
“I understand, Mrs. Karen.”
I looked at her with a smile.
“This baby came unexpectedly, but at the best possible time. I will never do anything that could hurt him or jeopardize his health.”
Mrs. Karen nodded before turning her attention to the files in front of her.
She had been the backbone of my marriage to Lysander for the past five years. She was the one who constantly advised him not to be impatient about having a child because, someday, I might have one.
She was also one of the people who helped my marriage survive this long. Without her support, my marriage to Lysander probably would have collapsed a long time ago.
I stood up with a smile and wrapped my arms around her in a hug.
“Thank you so much, Doc. You’ve been incredibly supportive throughout this marriage. I’ll forever be grateful to you.”
“It’s nothing, Mrs. Steel.”
She smiled before adding, “I only pray Lysander changes his ways after hearing this news and starts treating you like his wife, especially now that Old Mrs. Sylvie is gone.”
Mrs. Karen’s words instantly changed my mood.
However, I forced a smile, refusing to let her see the sadness those words had brought back.
“I’ll be on my way now, Doc.”
I wasted no time leaving the hospital and getting into the car, clutching the pregnancy report tightly in my hands.
“Take us to Santiago Villa,” I instructed my driver.
“Okay, ma’am!” he responded before driving off.
I stared at the pregnancy report throughout the journey, my mind wandering through countless thoughts.
Those thoughts took me back five years.
Five years ago, I abandoned everything I had—my family, my friends, my business, everything—and moved to Bluesky City in search of a new beginning.
That was where I met a very generous woman whom I once helped escape from some criminals.
Her name was Mrs. Sylvie Steel.
We gradually grew fond of each other. She would often visit Cameil and me whenever she came shopping at the mall where I worked.
Then came the beautiful night she asked me to visit her mansion because she had something very important to discuss with me.
Something very important that eventually turned into a marriage proposal.
She asked me to become her daughter-in-law by marrying her grandson, Lysander Steel.
At first, I strongly refused.
I believed it was improper to marry someone I barely knew.
But Old Mrs. Sylvie took me to the hospital and showed me her son lying critically ill.
He was in a coma and had already been unconscious for three weeks.
Her reason for asking me to marry him was simple.
She wanted me to bear him a child through artificial insemination.
She pleaded with me to do it and assured me that I would receive whatever I wanted from the marriage for as long as she was alive.
I believed in love at first sight, and after seeing the handsome man lying unconscious in that hospital bed, I decided to do it for him.
I signed the necessary documents, and the procedure began.
But the worst happened.
The insemination procedure damaged my womb, and the doctor later confirmed that I would never be able to bear children.
Not long after that happened, Lysander recovered from his coma and found me as his wife.
No matter how difficult it was for him, we continued living together as a married couple.
But we never slept on the same bed.
Today marked our fifth year of marriage.
But at the same time, it also marked the second week since we lost Old Mrs. Sylvie.
I sniffed and slowly folded the pregnancy report.
Just as I was about to put it away, a text message entered my phone.
I reached for it, but before I could read the message, my phone started ringing.
It was Lysander.
If he was calling me right now, it meant he had returned from Nightwind.
The moment I saw his name on my screen, that lost smile appeared on my face once again.
It was the man I loved.
“Hello?”
“Ivy, come to Santiago Villa. I have some news to share with you.”
Lysander said it immediately after I answered the call.
His words left me sitting at the edge of my seat.
Why did he sound like that?
His voice was colder and heavier than usual.
Lysander had never exactly sounded friendly toward me, but today, there was something different about his voice.
Something that made my heart uneasy.
“Mr. Jakub, please drive faster!” I said, looking toward the driver.
My heart continued beating faster.
What news could Lysander possibly have for me?
And why did he sound so serious?
I had chatted with him yesterday to inform him of the location where we would be celebrating our wedding anniversary, but he never responded, even after viewing my message.
So perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised to see him waiting for me at the same location.
Whatever Lysander had to tell me, I didn’t know.
But should I really be expecting a present from a man who barely gave me any attention?
Should I expect anything from a man who had once made me swear never to call him my husband in public?
The truth was that the only things that bonded Lysander and me together were our occasional “good morning” and “goodnight” greetings.
Sometimes, he didn’t even eat the food I prepared for him.
Yet, despite everything, I was still holding on to this marriage.
Because I loved Lysander.
Although he didn’t love me, I was determined to stay and fulfill the promise I had made to Old Mrs. Sylvie.
I would bear her son a child.
I would become the best wife I could be and, someday, a good mother to his children.
So, I kept the faith that whatever reason Lysander had asked me to meet him, it would be for something good.
Not something bad.
“Here we are, ma’am,” Jakub said after bringing the car to a stop in front of the most luxurious suite in Bluesky, owned by The Moores.
I immediately stepped out of the car.
A waiter approached me with a smile.
“He said I should bring you…”
I nodded.
“Okay. Let’s go.”
The waiter led me inside, and we walked straight toward the booked VIP lounge that I had personally decorated beautifully for our anniversary.
But the moment I entered, the waiter turned around and walked away.
There was a man standing with his back facing me.
His figure looked familiar.
Too familiar.
His tall frame, broad shoulders, muscular build, and straight legs were impossible to mistake.
His hair was long but stylishly shaved.
Wait…
Could that be Lysander?
The man who had been facing the wall slowly turned around.
My heart skipped.
It was him.
Lysander.
He stood there with an authoritative expression on his face. Something was in his left hand, while his right hand remained buried inside his pocket.
“You’re here, Lysan—”
“No need for that, Ivy.”
He cut me off before I could finish.
“I came here with a motive, and I don’t have enough time to waste around here.”
His voice was as cold as ever.
There wasn’t even an atom of joy in his words.
My smile faded.
“What… what do you mean by that?”
My voice cracked as I stared at him.
Lysander looked at me for a while, his expression hardening as though something I had said had irritated him.
Then he extended his hand toward me.
“Take a look at this, Ivy.”
He handed me the file he had been holding.
My eyes remained fixed on his face as I accepted it, clutching the papers softly.
What could be inside this file?
“Go on.”
His cold voice echoed through the room.
“What are you waiting for?”
His words startled me.
I swallowed hard and looked at Lysander one last time before slowly opening the file.
The first thing my eyes landed on was the heading.
DIVORCE AGREEMENT BETWEEN…
I didn’t even wait to finish reading the words.
A heavy, disbelieving chuckle escaped my lips.
“Divorce papers?”
