Chapter 4

IVY The next place I found myself was in a dark room. I had no idea how I got there. The last thing I remembered was Santos and Chris grabbing me and lifting me into the car. I tried to stand up, but I couldn’t. My hands and legs were tightly bound to something I couldn’t see. That was when I realized this was far more serious than I had initially thought. “Where am I?” The rhetorical question escaped my lips as panic slowly consumed me. I kicked my legs repeatedly and twisted my body, desperately searching for a way to escape, but nothing worked. The ropes only tightened around my wrists and ankles. “Somebody help me!” I screamed as loudly as I could. “Help! Somebody, please help me!” But no one came. The only response I received was the echo of my own voice bouncing around the dark room. I screamed several more times until my voice began to hurt. Then I stopped. Footsteps. My heart immediately skipped. They were faint at first. But they were getting louder. Someone was approaching me. “Who is there?” My voice trembled, but I tried to sound as bold as possible. “Who the heck are you?” The footsteps continued. Closer. Closer. Until they finally stopped. I could feel someone standing directly in front of me. Not just someone. Someone I knew too well. “Just tell me who you are!” I tried to sound threatening despite the fear coursing through my body. “You don’t know me, and you won’t like it when I tell you who I am.” Suddenly, there was a metallic click. My blood ran cold. A gun was pointed directly at my face. I yelped in fright. This was no longer a child's play. This was serious. “Will you keep quiet, or do you want to die?” A deep, muscular voice echoed through the room. My heart stopped. That voice… I knew it. “Lysander?” The moment I called his name, the lights suddenly came on. My eyes widened. It was him. Lysander. He stood directly in front of me, pointing a gun straight at my face. I didn’t understand why he was doing this. But one look at his face told me that something terrible had happened. His expression was darker than I had ever seen it. “What’s the meaning of all this, Xander?” My voice trembled. “Why did you tie me to this wall? And where are we?” Lysander slowly squatted in front of me. His eyes moved over my body before returning to my face. There was nothing but rage in them. “I’ll ask you for the last time, Ivy.” His voice was frighteningly calm. “Why did you stab Cameil?” I swallowed hard. My entire body was shaking. I could tell Lysander was ready to kill me if he had to. And now he was asking me a question he probably wouldn’t believe my answer to. “Answer me, Ivy!” His voice suddenly rose. “Why did you stab Cameil in the belly, knowing very well that she was pregnant?” “I didn’t stab Cameil!” My voice came out desperately. “She did that to herself!” Lysander immediately jumped to his feet. “Liar!” His roar echoed through the room. “You’re lying straight to my face even after I saw you with my own eyes!” He pointed the gun at me again. “I saw you stabbing Cameil. I saw the knife in your hands. You did that to her!” “You saw the knife with me because she threw it at me!” I cut him off, my voice trembling uncontrollably. “She stabbed herself, Xander! I swear!” “And now she lost her baby!” Lysander’s voice exploded through the room. “She lost my only child, you goddamn fool!” I shook my head vigorously. “No, Xander!” My eyes filled with tears. “Cameil wasn’t even pregnant! She has been lying to you all this time!” I desperately tried to make him understand. “She did this to herself just to create evidence and use it as a cover! She wanted to make everyone believe that I attacked her because she was pregnant!” My voice cracked. “Believe me, Xander! She’s a big-time liar!” I was still trembling as I spoke, praying that he would believe me. But Lysander only stared at me. There was something in his eyes that frightened me more than the gun. Disgust. Pure disgust. I had never seen that amount of disdain in his eyes before. Not even when he was angry with me. I knew Lysander didn’t love me, but he had never looked at me like this. Right now, he wasn’t looking at his former wife. He was looking at a murderer. And there was one thing I knew about Lysander. He hated murderers. His father had been murdered. That tragedy had left a scar on him that never truly healed. Lysander slowly stepped backward. Then he clicked the trigger. My heart nearly stopped. “An eye for an eye…and a life for a life. You killed my unborn child. So I’ll have to take yours.” My body went completely stiff. Lysander was about to pull the trigger when suddenly— The door opened. We both turned and our eyes landed on a man in a white coat who rushed into the room. It was Mr. Yaren, the chief doctor at Lysander’s hospital. My eyes widened. A hospital? So this was where we were. “Mr. Steel!” Mr. Yaren hurried toward Lysander. “The patient has lost a lot of blood and needs an immediate transfusion.” He paused briefly, catching his breath. “According to her medical records, her blood group is currently unavailable in the blood bank. We need to find a compatible donor and begin the transfusion as soon as possible.” Mr. Yaren suddenly looked toward me. Then he continued. “Miss Cameil shares the same blood group as Mrs. Steel.” He hesitated. “With your permission, can we perform a blood transfusion using Mrs. Steel’s blood?” “No need for my permission.” Lysander’s response was immediate. He lowered the gun slightly. “Take her with you and extract as many pints of blood as you need.” He stared coldly at me. “I don’t care.” Then his expression changed slightly. “Just make sure my wife stays alive.” My heart pounded violently. “No…” I shook my head in fear. The doctor's words immediately echoed in my mind. Stay away from anything involving transfusions or surgical procedures. It may jeopardize the health of your unborn child. Mrs. Karen had warned me. She had specifically told me that a blood transfusion could put my unborn baby at risk. My hand instinctively moved toward my stomach. My baby. My unborn child. The child I had just discovered I was carrying. If this procedure went ahead… I could lose my baby. “No, please…” I looked at Lysander with terrified eyes. “You can’t do this.” But Lysander didn't even look at me. And as Mr. Yaren and the medical staff moved toward me, one terrifying thought consumed my mind. If they transfused my blood into Cameil… I could lose the only child I had ever been able to carry.
