Luna was sitting on a hospital bench as the doctor was setting her cast. Her wrist was broken clean in two places. It was easy for the doctor to manipulate the fractures back in place so he did not have to do surgery. Her foot were sprained and swollen so that was bandaged. Her wounds on her face and under her feet were cleaned. Luna’s eyes was vacant as she stared out the window. Pack warriors were carrying body after body to a large pit close to the forest line. They threw each body in with ease as they were all very fit and unbelievably strong. Last in came alpha John with a body hanging over his shoulder, in his hand he held the severed head of the dead beta. He threw them effortlessly into the pit then walked away. He didn’t spare them a minute, nor a second for any remorse or respect. Beta James took a large can of gasoline and poured it over the bodies, then he flipped open a zipper lighter and threw it in. The flames started to lick up from the edge of the pit. Soon the pit was engulfed in flames and beta James left. There were none left to stand by the pyre, no one to mourn them or give them their last respect. Luna took her good hand to her cheek to wipe a tear that was rolling down. The doctor was giving her instructions but she could not focus on his words. When it looked like he was done she slid off the bench and walked back to John’s house. Two guards were standing outside the clinic room and as Luna left they followed her promptly. As she walked up the stairs to the house the guards stopped and stayed by the front door. When she got in she could see some blurs of people walking around her, it wasn’t that they were walking so fast. She just couldn’t focus well on things around her. Some duffle sounds similar to voices rung in her ears, but she could not focus on that either. She walked up the steps one at a time, slowly as her ankle was sore. She went to John’s bedroom and got out some clothes, then she walked to a guest room down the hall. There she got undressed and went into the shower. Luna held her cast high so it would not get wet, using only one hand to shampoo and soap up. She got out of the shower and dried up, then she got dressed and went to bed. She fell asleep almost immediately. For the next days she would stay in this guest room, John would bring her food and try to talk to her. But Luna was vacant and would not answer. He couldn’t get anything out of her, she was so distant and unapproachable. The doctor came by to check on her, he asked some questions but Luna was still as distant as before. The doctor and alpha John left the guest room and went downstairs. They sat in the sitting area both looking drained and exhausted. “I think she might be in shock still, but I’m not an expert on humans. I know a human doctor who knows about us werewolves, I can contact him.” Alpha John nodded while resting his chin his fingertips. He had his palms clasped under his chin leaning on them. His expression was serious and of concern. “Why is she sleeping in the guest room? I thought she would want my comfort.” The doctor sighed “she is trying to distant herself from everything, she is dealing with trauma and her fight or flight responses are still going wild. Right now she is in flight mode, so she is shutting herself off from everything to sort all her emotions. I don’t know how to deal with it, but I’m sure the human doctor would know what to do.” Alpha John sighed as he rubbed his face with his palms. “Please doctor, anything to get her better.”
Luna got up in the middle of the night, tip toeing down the steps to the kitchen. She opened up the refrigerator and opened a lever to expose the water filter. She took out the filter and poured some powder she had in a small bag into the water tank. She put back the filter and closed the door to the water system. She closed the refrigerator and walked back upstairs. The morning after all the elites were sitting in a conference room in alpha John’s house. In the middle of the table sat a big pitcher of fresh water. Each person had a small glass of water in front of them. In the kitchen was Luna working on her breakfast, her two guards were sitting there just observing her. She got out 2 glasses and poured some water from the refrigerator and placed it in front of them. Then she dished out an omelette she was making on 3 plates. The guards started to dig in on the omelette and Luna smiled at them. Soon enough they both took a sip of their water. Not long after the whole conference room had a sleeping crowd draped over whatever furniture they collapsed onto. In the kitchen there were 2 guards with their face planted into an omelette. Luna took her things she needed and put them in her bag, then she left a note by John’s desk. She walked out and got into a car standing outside. The keys were still in the car so she drove off through the pack lands. As she crossed the borders she waved at the guards, all they could see were Maddens car driving off.
In the sofa was a hunched and defeated alpha, his cheeks were soaked with tears. In his hand was a crumpled at wet note.
‘Dear John. I want you to know that I love you dearly. I never thought of or wanted to settle down and start a family, until you. I don’t want to hurt you, but I just can’t do this. When you dropped that head into the pit with no thought or concern, I just knew I had to get away. That was someone, a person. That person had someone love him like I love you. What I’m saying is, goodbye John.’
