Chapter 25 — The Stranger in the Library

Chapter 25 — The Stranger in the Library Night settled quietly over Elite Academy. Most of the campus lights had dimmed, leaving only scattered lanterns illuminating the stone walkways and gardens. The academy that buzzed with life during the day now felt strangely different. Quieter. Darker. More dangerous. Ariana Reed stood by the window of her dorm room, staring at the message still glowing faintly on her phone screen. “Tomorrow night. The old library. Come alone.” Her fingers tightened slightly around the device. Someone inside the academy knew the truth about her parents. And they wanted to meet her. That alone made the situation extremely dangerous. Behind her, the door suddenly opened. Lucas Knight walked in without knocking. “You’re thinking too loudly again,” he said casually. Ariana turned around. “You broke into my room.” Lucas shrugged. “You left the door unlocked.” Ariana crossed her arms. “You’re avoiding the point.” Lucas studied her expression carefully. “What happened?” Ariana hesitated. Then she handed him the phone. Lucas read the messages slowly. For the first time in a long while, the playful amusement in his eyes disappeared. “That’s not good,” he muttered. “You think I didn’t figure that out?” Ariana replied dryly. Lucas leaned against the desk. “The old library hasn’t been used in years.” Ariana frowned. “Why?” Lucas’s voice lowered. “Because that’s where your parents used to work.” Ariana froze. “What?” Lucas nodded. “Before they disappeared, they spent a lot of time researching something in the academy archives.” Ariana’s pulse quickened. “So whoever sent this message…” “…knows about them,” Lucas finished. Silence filled the room. Ariana finally grabbed her jacket. “I’m going.” Lucas blinked. “Tonight?” “Yes.” Lucas stared at her like she had just announced she was walking into a lion’s den. “That could be a trap.” Ariana walked toward the door. “Then I’ll find out.” Lucas sighed heavily. “You’re unbelievably stubborn.” “And you’re still following me,” Ariana said. Lucas smirked. “Of course.” The old library stood at the far end of the academy grounds. Unlike the newer buildings, this one looked ancient. Tall stone walls. Dark windows. Ivy crawling across the roof. The place felt more like a forgotten ruin than part of a prestigious academy. The wind rustled through the trees as Ariana approached the entrance. Lucas stopped several steps behind her. “I’ll stay outside,” he said. Ariana raised an eyebrow. “That’s unusual.” Lucas shrugged. “The message said come alone.” “So you’re respecting that?” “No,” Lucas said. “I’m respecting the fact that whoever sent this probably knows I exist.” Ariana pushed the heavy wooden doors open. They creaked loudly. Dust filled the air. Rows of old bookshelves stretched into the darkness. The entire building smelled like history and forgotten secrets. “Hello?” Ariana called quietly. Her voice echoed softly between the shelves. For a moment, nothing happened. Then a figure stepped out from the shadows. Ariana tensed immediately. The person was wearing a dark hood. Their face hidden. “You came,” the stranger said. The voice sounded young. Maybe a student. “Who are you?” Ariana asked. The hooded figure didn’t answer immediately. Instead, they walked toward one of the old tables. Several ancient books were spread across it. “You look just like her,” the stranger said softly. Ariana’s heart skipped. “Like who?” The stranger slowly lowered their hood. A young woman stood there. Short black hair. Sharp intelligent eyes. And an expression filled with quiet determination. “My name is Mira,” she said. Ariana studied her carefully. “I’ve never seen you before.” “You wouldn’t,” Mira replied. “I’m not part of the normal student body.” Ariana frowned. “Then what are you?” Mira gave a small smile. “I work for the academy archives.” Ariana’s attention shifted to the books on the table. Old documents. Ancient records. Family histories. “You said you knew my parents,” Ariana said. Mira nodded. “They were researching something before they disappeared.” Ariana stepped closer. “What?” Mira hesitated. Then she turned one of the books toward Ariana. The page showed an old symbol. A crown surrounded by seven stars. The same symbol Ariana had seen on the council summons. “The Elite Council wasn’t always in control,” Mira said. Ariana’s eyes widened slightly. “What do you mean?” “Your parents discovered that the academy once had another leadership system.” “A hidden one.” Ariana felt a chill run through her spine. “Another council?” Mira shook her head. “Not exactly.” She pointed to the symbol again. “It was called The Queen System.” Ariana blinked. “The Queen… system?” Mira nodded. “Yes.” “Before the Elite Council existed, the academy was led by a single student chosen through a secret process.” Ariana frowned. “That sounds exactly like the Crown Selection.” “Not quite,” Mira said. “The Crown Selection is just a watered-down version of the original system.” Ariana leaned closer to the documents. “So what happened to the original one?” Mira’s expression darkened. “The council destroyed it.” “Why?” “Because the Queen had too much power.” The room suddenly felt colder. Ariana’s mind raced. “So my parents…” “…were trying to restore the system,” Mira finished. Ariana stared at the old symbol. The crown. The seven stars. “You’re saying they believed someone new should become the Queen.” Mira nodded slowly. “Yes.” Ariana’s voice dropped. “And you think that person is me?” Mira looked directly into her eyes. “Yes.” Before Ariana could respond A loud noise came from outside the library. Lucas’s voice echoed from the entrance. “Ariana!” Ariana spun toward the door. “What is it?” Lucas rushed inside. His expression was tense. “We have a problem.” Ariana frowned. “What kind of problem?” Lucas pointed outside. “Vanessa.” Ariana’s stomach tightened. “What about her?” Lucas’s voice dropped. “She followed you.” Mira’s eyes widened. “That’s bad.” Ariana turned toward the library entrance. And at that exact moment Slow clapping echoed through the dark hall. Vanessa Cole stepped inside the old library. Her smile was slow. Satisfied. “Well,” she said calmly. “This is interesting.” Her eyes moved between Ariana and Mira. “So this is where the secrets are hidden.” Ariana clenched her fists slightly. Vanessa’s smile widened. “Looks like I arrived at the perfect time.” Vanessa took another step forward and said softly: “You know what I love about secrets?” Her eyes gleamed. “They make excellent weapons.”
