Chapter 22: The Seven Thrones.

Morning came slowly over Elite Academy. A pale golden light spilled across the towering buildings, painting the marble pathways and glass towers in soft warmth. From a distance, the academy looked peaceful almost beautiful. But Ariana Reed knew better now. Behind those elegant structures were secrets, rivalries, and power struggles that ran deeper than she had ever imagined. She stood in front of the mirror inside her dorm room, staring at the black card resting in her hand. The Council Summons. The silver letters seemed to glow faintly under the morning light. Ariana exhaled slowly. Today, she would face the most powerful group inside Elite Academy. The Elite Council. Seven people. Seven seats of power. Seven unknown judges. A soft knock came from her door. Ariana already knew who it was. She opened the door to find Lucas Knight leaning casually against the hallway wall. His posture looked relaxed as always, but his sharp gray eyes were focused. “You ready?” he asked. Ariana lifted the card slightly. “Do I have a choice?” Lucas smirked faintly. “Not really.” He pushed himself off the wall and began walking down the corridor. Ariana followed him. As they moved through the dormitory hallways, students began whispering again. The rumors had clearly spread overnight. “That’s her.” “The Council summoned her.” “Why would they call a first-year student?” “Something must be wrong.” Some students looked curious. Others looked jealous. But a few stared with open hostility. Ariana ignored them all. Her mind was focused on what waited ahead. The Council Tower stood at the far edge of the academy campus. Unlike the other buildings, this one was older. Much older. Its dark stone walls stretched high into the sky, covered with ancient carvings and strange symbols that Ariana didn’t recognize. The tower looked less like part of a school and more like something from another era. Lucas stopped at the base of the tall iron doors. “This is as far as I go,” he said. Ariana frowned slightly. “You’re not coming in?” Lucas shook his head. “No one enters the council chamber unless they are summoned.” Ariana studied the massive doors. They looked heavy enough to guard a fortress. “What happens inside?” she asked. Lucas looked at her carefully. “That depends on what they decide.” “And what if they don’t like me?” Lucas’s expression turned serious. “Then things could become… complicated.” Ariana sighed softly. “Well,” she said calmly, “I guess we’ll find out.” Lucas stepped aside. “Good luck, Ariana.” For a moment, their eyes met. There was something unreadable in Lucas’s gaze. Concern. Curiosity. And something else she couldn’t quite identify. Ariana turned back toward the doors. The moment she stepped closer, they began to move. The giant iron doors opened slowly with a deep metallic echo. Inside was darkness. Ariana stepped forward. And the doors closed behind her. The interior of the tower was enormous. Rows of tall pillars stretched upward into the shadows above. At the center of the room stood a circular platform. Seven large chairs formed a half-circle around it. Seven thrones. Each one different. Each one powerful. But the seats were mostly hidden in shadow. Ariana could only see faint silhouettes. A calm voice echoed through the chamber. “So this is Ariana Reed.” Another voice followed. “She looks ordinary.” A third voice chuckled softly. “That’s what makes it interesting.” Ariana stood still in the center of the chamber. She refused to show fear. “You summoned me,” she said clearly. “Why?” For a moment, the chamber was silent. Then one of the figures leaned forward slightly. A man’s voice spoke. “You passed the Shadow Trials.” Another voice added. “Faster than most candidates.” “And yet,” a woman’s voice said coldly, “you were not recommended by any elite family.” Ariana’s eyes narrowed slightly. So they had investigated her. One of the shadows spoke again. “That raises an important question.” “Who are you really?” Ariana met the darkness with steady eyes. “A student,” she answered simply. A quiet laugh echoed through the chamber. “You expect us to believe that?” Another council member spoke. “We know more than you think.” Ariana’s pulse quickened slightly. But her expression remained calm. “What do you think you know?” she asked. The council chamber grew silent again. Then the figure seated in the central throne finally spoke. The moment that voice echoed through the room, the atmosphere changed. Power. Authority. Control. “Miss Ariana Reed,” the leader said slowly. “Do you know why Elite Academy exists?” Ariana frowned slightly. “To educate elite students.” The leader chuckled softly. “That is the public answer.” Ariana’s curiosity sharpened. “What’s the real one?” The council leader leaned forward slightly. And for the first time, a faint beam of light revealed part of his face. His eyes were sharp. Calculating. Dangerous. “This academy,” he said slowly, “exists to shape the future rulers of the world.” Ariana’s breath caught slightly. Political leaders. Corporate giants. Global power. Everything Lucas had hinted at was true. “And sometimes,” the leader continued, “someone arrives who threatens the balance of that future.” The other council members shifted slightly. The tension in the room grew heavier. “And you,” the leader said quietly, “might be one of those people.” Ariana’s heart beat faster. “Why would you think that?” The leader tapped the armrest of his throne once. A large screen suddenly lit up behind Ariana. A photograph appeared. Ariana turned. Her eyes widened slightly. It was an old photo. A very old one. A man and a woman standing beside a young child. The child was Ariana. Her chest tightened. She had never seen this photo before. “How did you get that?” she asked. The council leader’s voice was calm. “Because your parents were not ordinary people.” The room fell completely silent. “And if our investigation is correct,” the leader continued, “your family once held influence powerful enough to rival the founders of this academy.” Ariana’s mind spun. “That’s impossible,” she said. But the council leader’s eyes narrowed. “Is it?” The screen changed again. More files appeared. Hidden records. Old company documents. Family names Ariana had never heard before. One council member leaned forward slightly. “So tell us, Ariana Reed.” His voice carried quiet tension. “Did you truly come here as an ordinary student?” Or— His words cut through the chamber like a blade. “Did you come here to reclaim something that once belonged to your family?” Ariana stood frozen. Her mind raced. She didn’t know the answers. Not yet. But one thing had become terrifyingly clear. Her past… Was not what she thought it was. Suddenly The giant doors of the council chamber burst open. Everyone turned. Lucas Knight stood in the doorway. His expression was darker than Ariana had ever seen. The council leader’s voice sharpened instantly. “You were not summoned, Lucas.” Lucas stepped inside anyway. “I know.” His eyes moved toward Ariana. Then back to the council. “But if you’re going to question her past…” His voice dropped dangerously. “…then maybe you should tell her the truth.” The council chamber fell into stunned silence. One council member spoke slowly. “What truth?” Lucas’s gaze hardened. “The one you’ve been hiding.” He pointed toward the screen behind Ariana. “The reason her family disappeared.” Ariana’s heart slammed in her chest. “What are you talking about?” she asked. Lucas looked directly at her. And the words he spoke next changed everything. “Your parents didn’t disappear, Ariana.” The council members stiffened. Lucas’s voice echoed across the chamber. “They were removed.”
