Chapter Seven : The Deadly Game Begins

1003 Words
The East Garden was silent except for the faint rustling of leaves and the distant croak of a night owl. Moonlight pooled across the wet grass, glinting on ropes, weighted traps, and the splashed fountain water. Ariana Reed crouched behind a stone statue, her heart steady but her mind racing. Vanessa Cole’s trap had escalated far beyond anything she had faced before, and the subtle threat in the black envelope was no longer abstract it was tangible. Vanessa and her followers circled the garden like predators, each step measured, each smirk dangerous. Ariana’s pulse thrummed not in fear, but in anticipation. Every obstacle, every trap, every taunt was now part of a deadly game. She had learned quickly: in Elite Academy, survival required more than brains it demanded courage, strategy, and nerve. Lucas Knight had moved silently to the edge of the garden, his shadow stretching across the hedges. He did not speak or interfere, merely watching, analyzing. Ariana could feel the weight of his gaze, sharp and unreadable. He was testing her, and she knew it. In this school, observation could be as dangerous as any weapon. Ariana’s mind raced through her options. She needed a strategy that would allow her to survive and strike back. She glanced at the glowing device embedded in the ground near one of the traps. Vanessa wanted control, yes but perhaps she underestimated Ariana’s capacity to turn the tables. The first strike came swiftly. A rope, weighted and angled perfectly, whipped toward her midsection. Ariana rolled to the side just in time, letting the rope crash against the statue she had been hiding behind. The force rattled the stone, sending a spray of water into her face. Her breaths came fast but controlled. She had to act quickly one misstep and she could be trapped or worse. From the shadows, Tiffany stepped forward, smirking. “Didn’t think you’d last this long,” she taunted. “But it’s just the beginning.” Ariana didn’t respond. Instead, she used Tiffany’s arrogance against her, kicking a small rock in her direction. Tiffany stumbled, crashing into a hedge, yelping. The distraction bought Ariana precious seconds. She darted toward the fountain, noting the position of Vanessa and the others. Vanessa’s eyes narrowed. “Clever, scholarship girl but clever won’t save you now.” She pressed another button hidden in her hand, and suddenly, more ropes shot out from the hedges, forming a near-impenetrable net around Ariana. The garden was now a web of danger, every rope a potential hazard. But Ariana’s mind worked faster than the ropes could move. She remembered every lesson from yesterday: observation, timing, and turning traps against the trap-setter. She seized a dangling rope, using its momentum to swing herself over one of the weighted nets. She landed gracefully behind a small marble statue and immediately rolled, narrowly avoiding another swinging rope aimed at her legs. Each movement was precise, calculated, survival woven into every motion. Ariana noticed Vanessa shifting closer, her smirk widening. The queen of Elite Academy thrived on control, and tonight, she wanted more than just humiliation she wanted domination. From the corner of her eye, Ariana saw Lucas step slightly forward, his eyes fixed on Vanessa, watching for every subtle movement. She realized the danger wasn’t just Vanessa and her followers it was the potential for anyone else watching, anyone else manipulating events from the shadows. Her lips curled into a faint, determined smile. She would not be trapped, she would not be humiliated, and she would not break. Not tonight. Suddenly, a loud snap echoed across the garden. One of Vanessa’s ropes had triggered a mechanical device Ariana hadn’t noticed. From the hedges, a glow of red light appeared a warning she hadn’t predicted. The entire netting system was electrified, a subtle but dangerous shock that could immobilize her instantly. Ariana froze for a heartbeat, then acted. She grabbed a metal rod lying near the fountain and deflected a rope, sending the electrical charge harmlessly into the water. Sparks flew, illuminating her determined face in the moonlight. The other students gasped at her ingenuity. Vanessa’s eyes flared with fury. “Impossible!” she shouted. “You can’t outsmart me!” Ariana didn’t answer. She moved silently through the traps, careful to avoid each hazard while positioning herself closer to Vanessa. Every step was deliberate. Every glance calculated. She wasn’t just surviving; she was learning, adapting, and turning the battlefield into her advantage. Then came the final threat. Vanessa herself lunged, moving faster than Ariana anticipated. Her hand reached for Ariana’s arm a direct attack meant to immobilize her. Ariana ducked at the last second, rolling forward and in that instant, Vanessa lost her balance, tripping over her own rope trap. She crashed into the fountain, water splashing over her designer uniform. For a heartbeat, the garden fell silent. Tiffany, Serena, and Lydia froze, unsure how to respond. Ariana stood in the moonlight, soaked from earlier splashes but unbroken, victorious, and more dangerous than before. But the victory was fleeting. From the shadows, a new sound emerged a low, deliberate clap. A figure stepped out slowly. Lucas Knight. His dark eyes gleamed, unreadable, dangerous. He took a step toward Ariana, then paused. “You’ve survived tonight,” he said, voice calm but carrying a subtle threat. “But surviving isn’t winning. And in Elite Academy the game only begins when you think you’re safe.” Ariana’s breath caught. Lucas wasn’t threatening her directly yet. But his presence, his tone, his calculated observation, made it clear the stakes were higher than she could imagine. Vanessa, humiliated but seething, struggled to stand in the fountain water, her eyes locked on Ariana with deadly intent. And then, from the shadows, another figure emerged someone Ariana did not recognize, cloaked in black, moving with precision and silence. She froze, every instinct screaming danger. The East Garden had become a battlefield, and tonight had proven one thing: no one, not even Ariana Reed, was safe in Elite Academy.
