Scattered but not broken

Soon the machine displayed a new page showing the words 'Congratulations, Transaction approved' and then an action button reading 'dismiss' right below it. This signified that the transaction has been successful, and so Samuel could release the money to her. and Samuel did so. But then problem knocked as the woman counted the money finish and then gave back a 1000 naira note back to Samuel to take his charge. " You said yes to me adding the charge ma" Samuel told the woman without collecting the money from her hand. Samuel at this point knew that he had encountered a problematic customer and so was only interested in finding a way for her to leave quickly without quarrels as he knew that too much quarrels will ruin his reputation as a POS worker and so not a lot of people would be willing to come and patronise him due to fear of mistakes. "It's like you woke up from the wrong side of the bird this morning, Arrrrreeeee youuu nooott theee one who asked me and I said no" The woman immediately proceeded with a yell at Samuel. But Samuel who understood that this was the nature of his job Samuel not wanting any troubles decided to try apologising even when he knew he did nothing wrong and the woman was lying through her teeth. "Okay, Am sorry ma, please can you let it go ma" Samuel said with all the politeness he could gather in his voice. "Let what go, Are you stupid or did you take something this morning, who are you telling let go, you have broken the money in my account now, how do I keep tabs on what's inside, how do I keep accounts of my money" The old woman replied even more furious. "But ma I asked you and you said I should add the charge, I even asked you twice cause I felt you weren't focused just so to avoid this drama and now you are saying an entirely different story, you are to old for this ma, please leave my shop" Samuel replied the woman, his earlier calmness had disappeared, he really couldn't take the woman's taunting anymore. "If I slap you, Who do you think you are talking to like that, do I look like your age mate and don't you know I could be your mother" The woman Lashed out again at Samuel. 'God forbid' Samuel muttered inwardly and luckily for him the woman didn't hear it. One could imagine the kind of drama the woman would cause if she hears it. After a bit of thinking, Samuel decided to not reply to the woman anymore in order to avoid saying things that might cause a severe reaction from the old woman, reactions like heart attack. He just went to his sit and sat down completely ignoring the old woman, while replying her in his mind, that was the trick he had come up with to ensure that whatever insult is thrown at him by problem customers, they would have little to no effect on him and it did work. The woman said all sort of s**t like Samuel's parent being irresponsible, and it was thier uselessness that caused Samuel to be here doing POS while his mate had gone to school. But then Samuel again just laughed inwardly, Deep within, he knew that he was proud to be a member of his family, as he knew the number of problems they had faced, but their resilience and unwillingness to fall had kept them going, their determination being their fuel and their hard work being their engine. This attribute has been what kept them going, Even though they seemed to have so many problems and issues, they have never for once truly giving up on anyone of themselves, And so even with all that Samuel had been through, he was still really happy to belong to such family, especially after hearing rumours of how other families were. Another factor that rendered the woman's insult worthless was that it wasn't that Samuel's dad couldn't send him to school, in fact, Samuel just finished his 100 level in university and was only back for holidays, and it also wasn't that Samuel's dad couldn't pay the bills alone but that Samuel just wanted to be of help instead of sitting down at home while his dad goes to market on daily basis to go and be struggling with younger boys. Samuel wanted it to be that if his dad hustled , he and his siblings will also hustle theirs, so that when time to go back to university comes, There would be more than enough money to get whatever they might need, And his siblings also looked at it in this light ot and so there wasn't any problem, so the woman looked more like a child speaking jargons to Samuel. Soon the woman seemed to have gotten tired and probably started feeling foolish and so she started walking away while turning back from time to time to vomit more jargons, Samuel had also completely turned away his face and started yelling for POS for more customers, hoping that the next one would be a reasonable one who won't cause trouble. Soon the sun seem to have reached the end of it's journey for the day and night slowly came by, Samuel who had already done some transactions though didn't fill fully satisfied, but felt he should really start going as it wasn't safe to be moving around with money once the sun completely dies down and the moon takes over. He first went to pack the goods in thier main shop before coming to pack the ones on the little plot of land where they shade their soaps. Samuel's mom was into three business, Selling footwear's, selling soaps and then POS. Samuel and his senior sister was more like managing the POS for her while taking out some gains for themselves while Samuel's senior brother had a business of his own. But Samuel had never been okay with the business as anytime he was doing it, he couldn't help but start asking himself whether this was how his life was going to go, The thing about Nigeria is that the rate of unemployment over there as always been really high and so being a graduate didn't necessarily mean having a bright future as Samuel had heard of so many stories of and from many people about being a graduate. Funny enough, his parent were graduate and yet no reasonable job, you can't even say they weren't serious with studies as one of them graduated with second class upper. They both are also very resourceful and would definitely be an asset to be reckoned with in any company that accept them but then none of that were the case instead they still had to resort to self employment in order to make enough money to take care of the family. Such was life, But then Samuel's dad had always been particular about education, claiming that education was still the best way to make it in life, but Samuel just didn't agree with that motion, He felt that education was undoubtedly the one of the best way to make it in life but it wasn't necessarily the best as there were so many ways that could challenge it in the current 21st century, There was tiktoking, content creation, blogging, novel writing, freelancing, music, and so many, There were even new method that seemed to be popping up everyday. Not too long ago Samuel heard of a new method called affiliate marketing, All he had to do was promote goods and services a company offers to the audience on his social media platform, and he will get a percentage commission when any of his audience takes the action agreed by him and the company. At first this sounded like an easy job to Samuel until he did his research and finally understood the difficulty in the occupation. Though the vocation sounds like an easy one, but the main difficulty was in building your social media account and not just building it but building it with an audience that is most likely to need the services you are promoting. After weighing the pro's and con's, Samuel decided to stick with story writing not because story writing was more easier, or that it paid more but that he knew it was necessary to stick with the one more compatible to him and he felt writing novel was far more compatible to him than convincing people to purchase goods and services. Samuel soon finished packing all the stuff and then put the machines in a little hand bag he carries and the money in his crossed bag. He then dusted his cloths to make himself look neater and checked to see if there was anything that will sell him out that he was holding money. He really couldn't afford anything happening to the money as he would have directly crippled his mother's business as quite the sum of money in the POS business belonged to his mom and dad and so he just couldn't afford it. After making sure that nothing gave him out, he composed himself and started his journey home. He wanted to enter a tricycle today and so all he need to do was cross to the other side of the main road, and then take a little walk to where tricycles to the side of the city where his home is were loading. He soon got into one and then brought out his phone and started watching t****k to pass the time as the tricycle drove away.
