How Did I Get Myself Into This?!
"Excuse me?" the young woman asked, shifting her weight on her heels.
"From this day forward, you will be working as my secretary and personal assistant, congratulations on your promotion, Miss Connor," the CEO extended his hand for her to shake it.
How the Hell do I get myself into these situations!?
~Three Hours Earlier~
My name is Ruby Connor. Twenty-six, single, successful and out here living my best life. After I graduated high school, I sought a career as a makeup artist, and wouldn't you know, it takes money to do that kind of thing? Coming from a poor Appalachian family, that wasn't something I exactly had a lot of.
Luck was kind of on my side though! This isn't a sad story after all! I ended up moving to New York and landing a gig at the corporate office of my favorite makeup brand: Eclipse Cosmetics. At first, I was just a sales girl doing free makeovers but my attention to detail and knowledge got me upstairs in the offices. I'm just a secretary but still, small victories.
Eclipse pays me pretty good too and all I have to do is keep up with appointments, attend a few meetings here and there and keep up my appearance. I change my hair color yearly with the trends, and stay up to date on the latest fashions, oh and I have to know how to do my makeup.
I woke to the sound of my alarm going off on my phone. I ughed and slowly rolled out of my queen sized bed and strolled into the bathroom to shower. I let my wavy hair down out of its nightly bun prison to drift flawlessly down my back and rest at my round butt.
I began to do my makeup for work: winged eyeliner, fake lashes, glitter shadow and a dark red lipstick to finish it up. I walked into my closet to pick out my outfit today, a black pencil skirt, black stilettos, and a dark red, flowing shirt to match my lips.
I went into my small kitchenette to grab my purse and walk out the door. I walked down the bustling New York city streets to my favorite coffee shop to pick up a large order for the board meeting this morning. The shop was run by a young woman and her brother, and had the best pastries.
"Good morning Miss Ruby, what're we having today?" the young woman said.
"Good morning Cadance, I need my usual, but I also need a large box of regular, a large box of decaf and the biggest box of assorted breakfast pastries you can legally sell me please," I said with a smile.
"You got it, girl," the woman order her brother to get the pastries and boxes of coffee ready whime she made my drink. The woman knew what I liked, and she was the only one I trusted to make my coffee.
"An iced caramel machiatto, extra shot espresso and coconut shot for you," she said as she handed me the large cup.
"You, Cadance, help me stay sane, thank you," I said as I took a sip.
"Caleb has all of your other stuff ready, do you want him to help you take it to the office?" she asked me.
"That would be epic, thank you" I said taking another sip.
Caleb carried the two large boxes of coffee and I carried the box of pastries. We walked the two blocks to the corporate office of Eclipse Cosmetics and I unlocked the front door and entered the code into the keypad to disarm the alarm system.
"Thank you so much Caleb, just throw them on my desk and ill get you a tip for helping me," I said as I placed the box carefully on my desk. He placed the two large boxes down and I reached into my purse to give him a fifty dollar bill.
"Ruby, you dont have to give me anything, let alone this much," he said trying to hand it back.
"Nonsense, y'all help me out with these meetings, please take it. If you don't want to give it to your sister or put it back in the shop drawer," I said shaking my hands out to tell him no.
"Thank you Ruby, we appreciate you and the business you do with us," Caleb smiled and waved goodbye as he walked out the front doors.
I got to work quickly, opening the meeting room up to open the shades and dust quickly. I ran into the kitchen to get large coffee pots for the coffee to stay warm and cleaned them before pouring them from their boxes. I set out fresh mugs and filled a teapot with hot water amd a basket if tea bags and set the pastries on a decorative platter in the shape of a crescent moon, the logo of Eclipse. I set out pens and paper at every seat and filled a vase with fresh flowers and water. I stood at the entryway to look over everything one last time before nodding to myself in approval.
"Perfect," I said as I clapped my hands together. The front door opened and the executives and members of the board came filing in one after another. I bowed respectively at each of them and guided them into the meeting room. A blacked out limosuine pulled into the front with paparazzi on its tail and out stepped the CEO, Roman Song.
The thirty year old was stunning to say the least, tall, strong build, broad shoulder that could really throw a girl into a wall to smother with his luscious lips, clean shaven and black hair smoothed out of his handsome face. Many women wanted him, I was no exception but Lord knows I can't stand a chance against the models amd actresses out for him.
He was followed by his most trusted member of the board, an old rat looking man, short and balding named Pierre Monteith. I didn't care much for him at all, he had an attitude problem and despite his ugly demeanor, he was a womanizing piece of s**t.
I maintained my polite composure and bowed to them both respectfully nefore showing them inside the meeting room.
"There is fresh coffee, both regular and decaf, hot water and various teas, and an assortment of pastries. Please let me know if you require anything at all," I said, motioning my hand over to the table with the items on it. I was just about to close the double doors when Monteith's uncivilized spit hit the floor after taking a sip of the coffee I had just bought.
"You call this muddy water coffee!?" he snarled at me.
Resisting the urge to say something smart, I bit the inside of my lip and said calmly, "if you would like something different Mr. Monteith, I will be more than happy to get you you whatever you like."
"Christ Roman, you need to hire more competent workers. This ditzy thing can't even get decent coffee for an important meeting!"
Biting my lip harder, "As I stated Mr. Monteith, I am glad to get you anything else-" he cut me off.
"The only thing you can offer me sweetheart is to sit on my lap during this whole meeting, it's the least you can do since your brain obviously doesn't function properly," the fat bastard said.
I couldn't hold back anymore and I let my appalachian side take over, "listen here you little round tick, I know for a fact that is the best damn coffee in all of New York City because I get it every f*****g meeting these poor people have to endure with you. Why don't you do us all a favor, and keep your big fat mouth shut!"
I turned to walk away and turned back around for a second go since I knew I would be fired anyway, "And one other thing, any woman who has the displeasure of sitting on your fat little baby legs, God bless her soul, because I would rather be f*****g dead! Now if anyone would like anything else, I am happy to oblige, but you," I said as I pointed my freshly manicured stilleto nail at him, "If you even so much as whisper my name again, I will drop you off in Hillbilly Hell and let them boys get all Deliverance on your fat ass!"
I slammed the meeting doors and heard the little toad begin yelling at Roman, who had stayed quiet during the whole thing. I grabbed one of the coffee boxes and began packing up my desk. I knew I was fired for letting it go, but f**k him for thinking he can talk to me like he does every other woman. He don't know redneck women and how we don't put up with that horse s**t.
I stayed at my desk, answering phone calls and scheduling meetings ahead of time for the girl who would soom be taking my spot. I truly loved my job and was happy doing it, but soon it would be over and I had to ag least get the rest of this month situated so I knew it would be done right.
People came and went out of the office and meeting room, I was too busy to notice who. I got a call on my office phone, "Eclipse Cosmetics, this is Ruby, how may I direct your call?"
"Miss Connor, I would like a word with you in my office please," came a sexy deep voice. I sighed, knowing it was Roman Song calling me up to fire me.
"Yes, right away sir," I said and hung up the phone. I walked to the elevator and hit the top floor, pacing around the small space nervously. The elevator dinged and the door open into a large open area with an empty secretary desk amd black leather sofas. I knocked on the large mahogany double doors into the CEO's office, and waited for the deep "enter" before I opened the door and closed it behind me.
I walked into the large room, with windows on all sides and walked towards the large black desk in the center. I noticed the old CEO and Roman's mother, Antionette Song, lounging on a black sofa off to the side, drinking a martini. The woman looked like something out if a 1950's fashion magazine, elegant and beautiful. I halted a few feet from the desk, and stared directly at Roman, showing no fear for what was about to come.
I bowed respectfully at him and Antoinette, a little sad she was here to see this since she was the one who hired me in the first place. I remember her saying to me in my interview, 'You will be exciting for this company' and here I am, about to let her down.
"You requested to see me sir?" I asked, waiting for the worst. I flinched a bit when I heard clapping and looked to Antoinette, who had set her drink down and clapped with a huge grin.
"I knew you would be exciting! you have exceeded my expectations Ruby darling! My God girl, do you deliver," the woman said grinning ear to ear as she walked over towards me.
"P-pardon me, madame?" I asked, a little taken aback.
"I have been waiting for years for a girl capable enough to knock old Monteith off his pedestal he placed himself on. You darling, are the only one who has ever done it!" she placed her dainty gloved hands on my shoulders, "well done!"
I looked at her in shock, and turned towards Roman waiting for him to speak. He cleared his throat and side eyed his mother, who scoffed as she turned to go back to the couch, "say what you want Roman dear, but that man has always been a royal prick."
As the woman sat back down with her drink, Roman came around from behind his desk and leaned back against the front of it, staring at me intently with his gorgeous blue eyes.
"Miss Connor, firstly, I want to offer you an apology on behalf of my partner. His outburst was completely uncalled for and while I find your methods...uncouth, I do think they were incredibly well deserved."
"Let me get this straight, you aren't going to fire me?" I asked, placing my hand over my chest.
"On the contrary, I would like to promote you," he extended his hand out for me to shake, "From this day forward, you will be working as my secretary and personal assistant. Congratulations on your promotion, Miss Connor."
