The first shift

The weekend and the following week flew by and tonight is the night I’m due to shift. The last day of school and my 18th birthday!

“I can’t believe it’s finally here” I tell Faith

“I am so ready Kate. A few more hours and our lives will finally change. I’m so happy things will start getting easier for you and that I can help handle people for you!”

The hours flew by and Lucy and I just got off the phone after deciding to meet in a private part of the woods behind my house. I ran down stairs straight into my father, who surprisingly doesn’t look like he wants to rip me apart today. Huh, that’s a different scene.

“Kate, I need to talk to you for a minute.”

“Um, okay dad. What’s up?” I say suddenly nervous. He never talks to me and if he does it’s never this calm. I can’t even imagine what he’s about to say.

“Kate, there isn’t an easy way to say this so I’m just going to say it. You’re not my daughter. Your mother had a daughter with another wolf before meeting me, her true mate, and at the time I decided to raise you as my own because it was the right thing to do. But your mother died which changed me, and I resent you for being hers. Every time I look at you, I see her and what I lost. I feel like I can not move on with you here. I want to tell you good luck on your shift tonight and finding your mate and out of curtesy of your mother, I will give you till midnight tomorrow to be moved out of my house. That will be all” he got up and left the house. I want to cry, how could this be true? A ping sounds from my phone and it’s Lucy saying she is at our spot wondering where I am. I get up and slowly leave the house, this is supposed to be the best day of my life and I won’t let this ruin that for me.

“Let’s go and be one Kate honey. Things will be fine, I promise.” Faith says and at this point I believe her. He never treated me nice anyways so I’m not loosing out that much but I do wonder, if he isn’t my father than who is?

I finally get out to the woods with about 30 minutes to spare before the full moon hits it’s apex and we can shift. Lucy is jumping up and down and so excited!

“It’s time Kate honey, take off your clothes and get on your hands and knees. It will help with the pain of the first shift” Faith says. I tell Lucy the same but I’m sure he wolf is helping her all the same.

“My wolfs name is Jade, Kate. She said we have about 30 minutes are you ready?” Lucy asks.

“30 minutes? My wolf says it’s happening to me now?! Goddess! I’m freaking out!”

I undress and get on my hands and knees and can feel my bones already starting to break and reform into her form. It’s excruciating pain and I really hope it gets easier the more we shift.

“We’re nearly there Kate, are you ready?”

I can’t even talk with the pain radiating through my body but she knows I’m ready. I’ve been waiting for this day my whole life.

“Kate, goddess. You are a white wolf. I heard there hasn’t been a white wolf in thousands of years. You are supposed to be a direct line to the moon goddess Selene herself. You’re beautiful and my wolf wants to serve you” Lucy says.

I’m shocked I can’t believe what she says so I dart off to the lake a little further to see for myself and sure enough there I am. A white, huge, beautiful wolf with black paws. My goddess, thank you thank you thank you!

“Kate, we can never allow any one else to see us in this form. White wolves are hunted for their powers and we WILL be hunted, abused and killed if they learn of us. We need to shift back now before the others find us!” Faith yells.

I run back to Lucy as fast as I can. She seems to be shifting but it is taking her much longer to do so than it did me. I guess that has to do with me being a white wolf.

“Faith, how do I shift back?!”

“Just picture yourself in human version and you will” she says like she’s done this a million times.

I do just that and shift back and hurry to put my clothes back on just as I hear the current and soon to be alphas howls pierce through the air.

“Luce, I need you to listen to me okay? White wolves are hunted for their powers, used, abused and then killed. You can never tell anyone that I am one do you understand?”

I put some dominance in that question and she showed her neck in submission. I didn’t mean to do that to her and I have no idea where it came from but this is serious. She looks up and says

“Of course Kate, you’re my best friend and I would never put you in dangers way”

“Thanks Luce, I know that I’m sorry. Listen. Get on your hands and knees and listen to your wolf, she will guide you through this shift.” I tell her and then she shifts into a beautiful smaller grey wolf with red paws to match her red hair.

Another howl comes piercing through the air, the soon to be Alpha Cades. I’d recognize it anywhere and it sounds a lot closer.

“MATE” Faith purrs.
