Olivia's pov
I had been anticipating this moment my entire life. At least, that’s how it felt. Daniel, the love of my life and my partner, the one I envisioned spending forever with, he had never popped the question. We had discussed it enough to create an unspoken understanding, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was holding out for the ideal moment. Or perhaps he was just waiting for me to take the initiative. I wasn’t certain. But today? Today, I was resolute. Today was my moment. I stood before the bathroom mirror, my fingers combing through my disheveled hair, the sweat on my palms revealing the anxiety churning within me. My breath came in quick gasps, my heart racing as if it sensed the upheaval I was about to create. What if he declined? What if everything I believed about our relationship was a misconception? There was no turning back now. I couldn’t revert to being the girl who waited. Then, a sudden idea struck me, clear and decisive like a twig snapping beneath my foot. I wasn’t going to wait any longer. I was going to propose to him. Me. It would be daring. It would be a surprise. It would be everything I had ever wanted. I glanced at my reflection in the mirror one last time and took a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves. Valentine’s Day. A day meant for love. I had always envisioned Daniel proposing, perhaps during a cozy dinner or on a beautiful beach. But that dream was starting to fade. If I kept waiting, I might drive myself crazy. So, enough was enough. If he couldn’t decide, I would take charge. With a renewed sense of determination, I turned away from the mirror and picked up my phone from the table. My fingers flew across the screen as I browsed for inspiration. Dresses. Rings. Romantic ideas. A smile spread across my face as I saw couples in matching red outfits—so in love, so hopeful. Why not us? Why not me? I set my phone down, already crafting a plan. I had no time to lose. The dinner, the ring, the perfect moment—it was all going to come together. I headed to the kitchen, my thoughts still racing. "Miriam," I called out, my tone both firm and warm. Miriam, my cook and dear friend, looked up from her chopping, curiosity evident on her face. "Yes, Miss Olivia?" "I need you to help me create something special for tonight," I said, a playful smile forming. "Transform the house into a romantic dinner setting. Candles, flowers, everything. I want it to feel like a proposal, but—" I hesitated, unsure if I should continue, "but with a twist.” Miriam hesitated for a moment, a spark of realization lighting up her expression. "Are you planning to propose?" she inquired, her voice a blend of astonishment and enthusiasm. I nodded affirmatively. "Yes. I want it to be flawless. Can you help with that?" Her grin widened. "Count on me, Miss Olivia. It will be a moment to remember." With that, I pivoted and headed toward the exit, determined not to waste another moment. The ring I had been longing for was finally within reach. Today was the day. As I walked to the jewelry store, the city's energy surged around me with each step. My hands were still a bit sweaty, but I was undeterred. I was ready to seize my future. Upon entering the store, the cool air enveloped me, and the gentle chime of bells announced my presence. I approached the counter without hesitation. “Hello, I need a ring,” I stated, my voice calm despite the racing of my heart. The jeweler raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Certainly. What type of ring do you have in mind?” I took a moment to breathe. “Something that signifies forever,” I replied softly. “Something that will truly impress him.” The jeweler smiled knowingly, as if this was a familiar request. “Let me show you our finest selections.” I followed him to a display case, my fingers gliding over the glass, exploring the contours of each ring. One in particular captured my attention immediately—a solitaire diamond set in platinum, its elegant simplicity breathtaking. It was everything I had envisioned. I pointed it out. I pointed to it, my excitement barely contained. The jeweler handed it over, and I slid it onto my finger. It fit perfectly. I could already picture Daniel’s reaction—his eyes widening in surprise, his smile breaking into that grin I adored. “Great choice,” the jeweler remarked, starting to wrap it up. “You have excellent taste. This will definitely leave an impression.” I paid for the ring, my heart racing as I tucked it into my purse. The hardest part was done. Now, I just needed to reach Daniel’s office. The drive felt like a blur. I hardly registered the roads, my mind racing with possibilities. I envisioned the moment—me in front of him, the ring glinting as I knelt. His expression would be one of disbelief, but he would say yes. He had to. There was no way he could refuse. I arrived at the office building and parked, my hands trembling as I retrieved the ring from my purse and slipped it into my coat pocket. I took a deep breath. This was the moment I had been waiting for. As I walked through the lobby, my heels clicked on the shiny floor. The elevator ride seemed endless, the anticipation almost unbearable. When the doors opened on Daniel's floor, my stomach did a flip. He wasn’t expecting me; that much was clear. I made my way down the hallway to his office, my heart racing with each step. But as I neared his door, I heard something that made me pause. Laughter. Soft and low, but unmistakable. I hesitated, curious about the source. It could be a coworker joking around, but the voice… it was unmistakably Vanessa, his secretary. She always seemed a bit too eager to be close to him, finding ways to touch his arm and linger just a bit too long in his presence. A chill coursed through me, an unsettling feeling I couldn't quite place. Something was definitely wrong. I leaned in closer to the door, my heart racing, and that’s when I heard it. A gentle kiss, followed by her laughter and his soft chuckle. No. Without a second thought, I pushed the door open. There they were. Daniel, my Daniel, his lips on Vanessa’s, their bodies too close, too familiar. The world around me blurred, my breath caught in my throat. The scene hit me like a punch. My hands turned icy, the ring in my pocket suddenly feeling like an unbearable burden. They broke apart at the sound of the door creaking, but it was too late. I had seen everything. The betrayal was evident on their faces. "Olivia—" Daniel began, his voice a mix of shock and remorse. I was frozen. I couldn’t utter a word. All I could do was look at him, the man I had loved, the one I had envisioned a future with, kissing another woman. The words slipped out in a whisper. “I was going to propose to you tonight." Daniel’s expression contorted, but I was beyond caring. My heart shattered, and nothing he could say would mend it. "I hate you, Daniel!" With that, I turned away, the sound of my footsteps echoing in my ears as I walked off, the weight of the ring in my pocket growing heavier with each step. As I neared my car, I noticed a man in a blue suit, his hair tousled yet determined. I inhaled deeply, tears streaming down my face, and rushed toward him. “Excuse me, how can I assist you?” he asked, his voice calm and soothing. Taking one last steadying breath, I took his hand, reached into my pocket, and pulled out the ring. I slipped it onto his finger, my eyes fixed on the ground, bracing for an awkward moment, but he surprised me with his response. “I do.”
