"The Big Competition"
The regional cooking competition was only two weeks away.
Liam trained harder than ever.
Every day after his shift at the restaurant, he practiced new techniques. He learned how to prepare sauces, improve presentation, and balance different flavors.
His mother watched proudly as he practiced in their small kitchen.
“You're becoming more confident,” Maria said.
Liam smiled.
“I still have a lot to learn.”
“That is what makes a good chef.”
At the restaurant, the head chef announced the team members.
“Liam, you will prepare the main dish.”
Liam's eyes widened.
“Me, Chef?”
“Yes. I trust your creativity.”
Liam felt nervous, but he nodded.
“I won't disappoint you.”
On competition day, the venue was filled with chefs, students, judges, and spectators.
Liam looked around nervously.
Then he saw Adrian.
Adrian was wearing the uniform of another well-known restaurant.
Their eyes met.
“Ready?” Adrian asked.
Liam smiled.
“Always.”
The competition began.
The first round was speed cooking.
Liam's team finished successfully.
The second round tested creativity.
Their team created a dish inspired by Filipino home cooking.
The judges loved it.
But the final round was the hardest.
Each team had to create a signature dish that represented their personal story.
Liam immediately knew what he wanted to make.
He wanted to recreate the flavors of his mother's kitchen.
He prepared garlic rice, tender chicken, vegetables, and a special sauce.
As he cooked, memories filled his mind.
His mother teaching him how to hold a knife.
Their old stove.
Their simple dinners.
The promise he made years ago.
One day, I will have my own kitchen.
Liam carefully placed the final dish on the plate.
Across the room, Adrian finished his own creation.
The judges tasted both dishes.
The room became silent.
After several minutes, the head judge stood.
“Both teams performed exceptionally well.”
Liam held his breath.
“The winner of this year's regional competition is…”
The judge paused.
“Liam's team!”
The crowd erupted in applause.
Liam couldn't believe it.
His teammates hugged him.
Adrian stood quietly across the room.
For a moment, Liam expected anger.
Instead, Adrian walked toward him.
“Congratulations,” Adrian said.
“Thanks.”
Adrian smiled.
“You deserved it.”
Liam smiled back.
“Your dish was amazing too.”
“Maybe next time I'll win.”
“I'll be waiting.”
But the victory brought Liam more than a trophy.
The judges offered him an opportunity to train at a prestigious culinary academy.
It was the opportunity he had always dreamed of.
There was only one problem.
The academy was far from home.
Liam would have to leave his mother.
That night, he returned home and placed the trophy on the old wooden table.
Maria stared at it with tears in her eyes.
“You did it.”
Liam looked at his mother.
“Mom…”
She already knew what he wanted to say.
“Go,” she whispered.
Liam's eyes filled with tears.
“But what about you?”
Maria smiled.
“I gave you a dream. Now it's time for you to chase it.”
Liam hugged his mother tightly.
He knew the next chapter of his life would be difficult.
But he also knew something else.
The little boy who once dreamed beside an old stove was finally one step closer to building My Dream Kitchen.
