Chapter 1
This is the third time I have tried calling my brother and his phone is going straight to voice mail. Chris knew I had an important interview and as always, he is late. I was pacing up and down our house waiting for him to come at any moment. I decided to dial his number again and this time I have left a death threat after the beep.
“Chris this is the hundredth time I’m calling. Where the hell are you? You know this is important to me, you better be in a ditch somewhere because you are as good as dead when I lay my eyes on you,“ the phone beeped before I could continue with more threats.
I let out a screech screaming loud before I heard a shout upstairs. My shout might have woken my grandpa because I made my way up the stairs.
“Emily you still here?” My grandpa spoke.
“Yes, Chris is not here and I can’t leave you alone” I gave him a flat smile.
“Don’t worry about me. This is important to you I will be fine. I can take care of myself you know, ” he gave me a knowing smile I returned.
“I know, but-“ before I could finish I heard the door downstairs open, “Must be Chris will see you later. I kissed his cheek as I ran downstairs.
I love my twin brother, but today I want to murder him because if I lose this job interview it will be his fault. Grandpa can’t take care of himself because he fell and broke his hip and since he is old and frail he needs to stay in bed and heal.
“Chris you better start talking,” my feet stopped when I saw my brother's hands tied behind on the floor.
“No, don’t. She has nothing to do with this.”
“Todd?” I whispered, “What’s going on?” I moved to run to my brother, but Todd moved to stop me.
“I wish this was a friendly visit, but I’m afraid not,” he clicked his tongue grabbing my arm forcefully.
“Get your hands off me, Todd,” I yanked my hand away, “My grandfather is upstairs.” I glared at him, but his hand remained firm.
“Let her go, ” Chris tried to get up and failing because of his bound hands.
“What did you do?” I gritted my teeth speaking to my brother.
“Sweetheart, what is going on down there. Is that Chris?” Grandpa shouted.
“Tell him everything is fine,” Todd whispered, “Let’s not cause a scene.” He spoke pulling his gun behind his back.
“Every… Everything is fine. Chris is here” I shouted.
“Well, you better hurry up. You have a big interview. I will smack his head for you when he gets up here,” he shouted back.
“Thanks,” I shouted.
I knew Chris always hung out with dodgy people and he was up to no good and I never got in his way as long as it never reached this house. Our parents died when we were young, and we grew up with our grandpa. He was the one who worked hard to give us a roof over our heads and made sure we got a good education.
“You promised,” I whispered only for us to hear looking at my brother.
“I know Em,” he responded groaning.
“Enough with the games. Where is the money, Chris?” Todd pointed the gun at me.
“N-no, wait a second. I said I don’t have the money,” he spoke before he successfully got up, wincing looking at me “Sis?” He moved closer.
Having a gun over my head was not new to me and hell it would not be the last time someone points a barrel at me. The neighborhood I stayed in was pretty shitty, and this type of thing was an everyday experience. I had somewhere important to be and Todd holding a gun was not going to stop me from making it in time for the interview.
“How much?” I took a deep breath as I glared at Chris.
“Sis,” he responded, shaking his head.
“I said how much?” I gritted my teeth.
“Em listen,” he walked closer and I could see a chipped lip and blood dripping from his head but this was nothing new. “We don’t have that kind of money,” he responded.
“Tell her Chris,” then he smirked enjoying the show, “Tell her how much you stole” he pressed the gun to my head.
“250,” he responded, looking away.
“What?” I looked at him, shocked.
Todd laughed, enjoying the conversation before he pulled the gun away from my head, looking at both of us in amazement.
“Chris start talking, or I swear he will be the least of your problems.”
“Liza stole the money from me and ran,” he looked away, ashamed, “I’m sorry Em.”
I made a small chuckle, shaking my head before smacking my brother in his head. ”You never listen do you?”
“Ouch, what the f**k Emily.”
“Enough chit chat. Either you pay up Chris or she pays,” he smirked at me.
“Don’t you dare touch her. I will pay you back okay, I need more time.” Chris responded, moving to Todd before he pointed his gun at Chris and he took a step back.
“That’s enough.” I walked in front of them, ”First off you are not my type, and secondly drop the act Todd you might scare him but not me.”
“Funny you say that when you dated my brother,” he spoke and my heart dropped feeling the pain resurface.
“Todd, watch how you speak to my sister,” Chris responded angrily.
“I got this Chris.” I recomposed myself and looked at Todd in the eyes, “Paul was my type and a far better person than you will ever be.”
He scoffed, “Let me show you the kind of a man I am and maybe you will take this seriously, feelings aside,” he spoke moving to hit Chris in the head with the head of the gun making him go down with a groan.
“Emily, Chris. What’s going on down there?”
“Just the TV. Everything is fine.” I shouted back.
“Sweetheart, you need to leave or you won’t make it in time,” grandpa shouted back.
“Yeah, I’m almost done, leaving soon,” I responded getting Chris up and making him sit on the chair before looking at Todd, “Some man you are.” I seethed at him looking at Chris’s head.
He shrugged, “Now you know this is serious.”
“Fine.” I pushed myself up folding my hands, “When do you need your money?”
Todd chuckled, “I know what you are doing and won’t fall for it,” he shook his head, “Either I get the money now or Chris here becomes my errand boy until the money is paid with interest.”
“NO,” I said.
“No?” He responded, “Then maybe you can pay his debt,” he moved closer, brushing his hand over my neck and playing with the ends of my hair.
“I’ll be your errand boy,” Chris spoke making Todd smirk.
“I said no,” Todd looked at me licking his lips, but I yanked his hand away from me, “I will do one job for you and all debt will be paid” I added.
“No, no,” Chris got up nearing me, “Em, you said you were not going to do this anymore. Grandpa needs you.” He pleaded.
“You should have thought of him before Todd dragged you in this house,” I responded. “I am doing this.”
“Dammit Em,” Chris spoke angrily, “Shut up and let me take care of my mess.”
“I forgot how you two can be annoying.”
“When is your next job?” I looked at Todd, ignoring Chris.
“There is this house on the other side of town. The guy lives alone and he is loaded and one of my girls went to his party a week ago. He has a safe and it’s full of cash enough,” he added.
“When is the hit?” I asked. “I’ll be there.”
“Tonight. Meet me at the club at 7,” he responded, and Chris scowled. “Welcome back Ghost,” he winked at me before walking out.
“You should have let me handle-“ I pointed a finger at him angrily before he could finish.
“Not another word,” I grabbed my keys, walking out, not bothering to untie his hands.
