IT WAS ALWAYS YOU
I fell in love with him before I knew his full name. It happened in silence, the kind that doesn't feel empty — it feels full. We were standing on my balcony, Nairobi glowing below us like it was holding its breath. The night was warm. My heart wasn't. "You don't have to be strong with me," he said. That was it. Not, I love you. Not I want you. Just truth. I turned to him, and for the first time in a long time, I let myself be seen. "My name is Amani," I said softly." And I'm tired." He didn't pity me. He didn't try to fix me. He pulled me into his chest and held me like he had nowhere else to be. "I'm here,"he whispered. "As long as you'll have me." My fingers tightened in his shirt. In that moment, I knew - This wasn't a chapter. This was the story. Some loves are choices. This was destiny. The Nairobi skyline glittered through the apartment window. It should have been ordinary, but nothing about tonight felt ordinary. Amani sat on the couch, knees tucked to her chest, fingers tracing the rim of her coffee cup. Her heart thudded in a rhythm she couldn't name. He leaned forward against a doorway, casually, but there was heat in his gaze that made her skin prickle. "You always sit like that," he said softly. "Like you're waiting for something... or someone." Amani looked up. "Maybe I am." He stepped closer, and just like that, the world shrank until it was only the two of them. She could feel the warmth radiating off him. The faint scent of his cologne made her dizzy. "You know," he murmured, tilting his head, "I've been waiting for this too." Amani's breath hitched. Waiting for what? For him to leave? For him to speak? For him to cross the line she secretly wanted him to? Before she could answer, his hand brushed hers. Light. Tentantive. Like it wasn't supposed to feel electric, but it did. She wanted to pull away but she couldn't. "Do you feel that?"he asked, his voice low, nearly a whisper. "Feel what?" she breathed. "This," he said, moving his fingers to lace with hers. "This...fire. This pull. The fact that I could stay here forever just holding your hand and it would still feel like the first time. Amani swallowed hard. Her cheeks burned. She leaned in without thinking, her lips hovering just above his. The room felt smaller. Hotter. Full of words, neither dared speak aloud. And then he closed the gap. Gentle. Slow. Measured. Not a kiss of possession...a kiss of knowing, of promise, of everything they hadn't admitted yet. When they finally pulled apart, it was only inches. Only the heartbeat of a love that had begun silently, but would never be quiet again. "I've wanted you like this," he whispered, "long before tonight." Amani"s chest tightened, her mind spinning. "I've wanted you too," she confessed, voice trembling. And just like that, the quiet between them wasn't empty anymore. It was alive
