The House in the Hill

“Damon, why did they tell them that we were taken?”Diana asked.   Damon sighed and put the folder down.     “It’s a cover up Diana. They did something unforgivable; of course they will cover things up with a lie.”Damon said.   The twins fell silent for a while a thought slowly brewing inside their minds. “I have a feeling that we should go back to where it started.”Diana said, looking at her brother. “To the first victim’s house.”Damon said.   ******************************     The next day, the twins walked around the city to gather more information regarding the disappearances. They began asking those who knew the missing persons of what they can remember before they were gone. Some witnesses said that they only remember hissing around them.s   When the night came, they donned their hooded cloak and went out in the silent of the night. The two Shadow Knights began leaping from roof after roof, like two shadows gliding through the air.   Their feet touched the ground when they came face to face with a huge mansion standing on top of a hill. The house looked rather old unlike the one they remembered.   They first began to look around the wide garden, and they noticed the wooden platform still standing, and the horrors of their past came back to them.   FLASHBACK     Damon and Diana stood in the middle of a made up wooden platform, under the bright moonlight. Both are scared and confused of what’s going to happen to them. Their entire household have gathered around them, and their parents stood proudly looking at them.   When the clock chimed at the exact midnight, everyone anticipated what’s going to happen next. But the ten year old twins both looked confused as the people gathered around them began muttering words they cannot understand.   The clock stopped chiming, and yet nothing happened. The twins’ parents furrowed their eyebrows. They are confused too as to what happened? They are shifters, and it’s in their blood that they would shift on midnight of their tenth birthday. “What is happening?”The twins’ mother asked, and then she turned to her husband. “Why aren’t they shifting?”She asked her husband.   The twins’ father looked at his children with disdain. “Runts.”The father sneered. “Father, what’s happening?”The young Damon asked, but his father grunted and walked out of the venue.   END OF FLASHBACK     “Why is this platform still here?”Diana asked, glaring at it. “Maybe they used it on her too. Come on.”Damon said, and they both disappeared in a puff of smoke.   When they appeared again, they are inside the mansion. They are standing at the bottom of the grand staircase where another memory came back to them.   FLASHBACK     Coming from the kitchen after their meal, the twins are on their way back upstairs, they stopped in their tracks when they saw their parents standing at the bottom of the staircase.   Damon immediately hugged his sister. “You little thieves!” Their mother screeched, raising her hand and slapped Damon and Diana.   The boy and the girl fell on the floor, cupping their throbbing cheeks. “We’re sorry mother, we’re just hungry.”Damon cried. “Don’t call me mother! I don’t have abnormal children!”Their mother exclaimed, and then she turned to her husband who was glaring at the children on the floor. “Dear, the tribe council will be arriving tomorrow. We cannot let them see these mistakes. I don’t want them to laugh at us.” “Don’t you worry my dear wife, I have a perfect solution.” The twins’ father paused and pulled out a gun.   Damon’s eyes widened and hugged his sister tightly. “F-Father...” “Shut up! Don’t call me father! I did not give life to two useless piece of garbage! Give us a favour and disappear forever!”Their father roared and pointed the gun on his children. “Father, n-no –“   Damon’s plea was cut off when their father pulled the trigger, shooting him and his sister twice. He felt the bullet hit him in the chest when he fell on the ground.   His sister was unconscious, with blood splattered on her little face. He looked at his mother pleading for mercy, but instead she kicked them several times. Before the darkness overcomes his senses, he saw his father called in his trusted henchmen, and ordered them to throw him and his sister.   END OF FLASHBACK     Damon took a deep breath and walked away, with Diana following him. They walk though the darkened hallway they once remembered to be bright and full of portraits. “Let’s split up, and blend in the shadows.”Damon said, and Diana nodded.   They both stepped back into the shadows and disappeared. Damon went ahead while Diana chose to go upstairs. She glides through the shadows and she began looking inside every room.   In one room she entered, she saw a figure sleeping soundly on the bed. Diana glided towards the bed and realized that it was her sister. She looked really beautiful and innocent, far different from their monster of a mother. Diana began looking around the room for clues or something, and then she realized that it was her old room.   When she was young she loved this room because it has the view of the whole garden. She loved looking through the balcony every morning to see the flowers bloom. But now, looking through the balcony she can only see the platform.   Looking around more, she then noticed something dangling on the lamp on the bedside table. She glided towards it, and looked closely. It was a necklace with a glass pendant, shaped of a rose. Diana took it remembering that the necklace was what she gave her sister when she was born. It was the day when her mother first slapped her because she broke her vase.   Diana sighed and stepped back, before she glided out of the room, towards the top most floors. When she got there, she waved her hand and the wooden door opened. She went in and once again the painful memories of their childhood hit her.   It was in that cold and bare room, that she and her brother slept for two years. She can still remember how she and Damon would share in a thin blanket so they won’t be cold at night. It only got worst during winter, that they felt their toes froze. They can only survive if their family cook would bring them additional blankets.   Diana looked around and she noticed that their stuff was now gone and it was replaced by boxes. Diana balled her fist at how heartless their parents were to them, just because they didn’t shift when they supposed to.   She scoffed at their parents’ beliefs. She turned around and glided out of the room, and went downstairs. When she got down, Damon appeared beside her. “The whole house looked deserted. I didn’t see anyone, no helpers, and no guards.”Damon said. “Desiree was upstairs.”Diana said, and Damon looked at her. “She still has the necklace.”Diana said looking at the necklace in her hand. “It doesn’t matter –“   Damon was cut off when they heard voices. The twins looked at each other before stepping in the shadows. They heard voices and hissing from what they remembered to be their father’s office.   The twin shadow knights glided towards the office, and when they got inside they saw their parents. Their father who looked older than they remember with his white hair and dark eyes, sat behind his desk looking scary as they both remembered. Their mother with her once blonde was now white is still pulled in a tight bun, was standing beside her husband.   Damon and Diana wanted nothing but to show themselves and show off their abilities. As they glide through the dark corners of the office, they tried to listen but all they hear was hissing.   The twins cannot understand why they can’t understand what their parents are saying, and then Diana noticed some hooded figures standing in front if their father’s desk. It’s quite difficult to see them since they are some sort of transparent.   Damon suddenly pulled Diana out of the house. Once they are outside, Damon grabbed Diana’s arms. “Whatever those creatures are, I believe they have something to do with the kidnapping.”Damon said. “The council needs to hear about this.”Diana said and Damon nodded.   As they left, Diana remembered that the necklace is still in her hands. She looked at her brother’s back before she turned around and went back towards the mansion.
