Chapter 9

The room went dead silent before exploding with noise. Mom and Dad stared at me in disbelief, like I'd spoken another language. "What did you say?" they gasped. Everyone knew this wasn't just about business - the Sullivan and Kingsley merger would unite two of Capinuss's most powerful families. It was supposed to be the perfect marriage, both for love and money. Taking a deep breath, I faced the crowd. "I’m breaking up with Sebastian. If anyone wants him, he's all yours. Maybe he and Kayla deserve each other. Anyway, I'm out of here." Yohan's face darkened with rage, his eyebrows scrunching together. "Have you lost it, Brittany? You can't just leave whenever you want!" he snapped. Everyone stared in disbelief when I ended the engagement. After all those years trying to make Sebastian love me, watching him run to Kayla today made me finally understand - it was over. "Really, Brittany? You're mad because I didn't help you up?" Sebastian glared at me. "Kayla's hurt because of you, and you're playing victim? Go apologize to her now!" I couldn't help but laugh. He still thought I was just being dramatic. "I'm not putting on a show, Sebastian. And I'm done pretending for you." I looked at him, feeling a calmness wash over me as I let go of everything we had shared. Those seven years felt like a dream, and now I was finally awake. People could say whatever they wanted about us—I didn't care anymore. Ignoring everyone around me, I turned and walked out. The rain was pouring down in sheets, but I stepped into it without hesitation. The rain drenched me instantly, but for the first time in years, I felt free. That's when I saw him again—the handsome, mature man leaning against a sleek black Cadillac Escalade. His assistant held an umbrella over him, but his piercing gaze cut through the rain and found mine instantly. I froze, feeling like I'd been struck by lightning. Two women walked past us, whispering but barely containing their excitement. "Look, isn't that the Kingsley Group CEO?" one whispered, wide-eyed. "That's not just any CEO," her friend replied. "That's Reginald Kingsley - the head of the Erandor mafia. Everyone in Capinuss knows not to mess with him. He's ruthless, and those who cross him don't live to tell about it." I stood there, frozen in shock. The mysterious man who'd come to me twice was Reginald, Sebastian’s father?! And he wasn't doing it to punish me for Sebastian hating me? My mind raced - the most dangerous man in Capinuss, the mafia king himself, had put himself in danger just to save me? Through my pain, a wild thought crossed my mind - what if I forgot about Sebastian and went after his father instead? I immediately squashed the thought, I wanted nothing more to do with the Kingsleys. I turned and walked quickly. A neon sign caught my attention. I ended up at a local bar. I was tired and thirsty, and I just needed a drink anyway. The music was loud, and smoke was all around me, making me feel uncomfortable. But I liked it—no one would notice my mood. I squeezed through the crowd and grabbed a stool at the bar. The bartender saw I was soaked and chuckled. "Lady, you come here without an umbrella?" I just shook my head, too exhausted to explain. It was the worst day ever. He poured me a rum and Coke. I nodded, taking a big sip. I glanced around the busy room, feeling like I hit rock bottom. Disappointment, heartache, and anger churned inside as I sipped. I checked my phone—missed calls from Mom, and accusatory texts from Sebastian. Now, I was too tired to deal with it. I slammed my phone down, and took another gulp, letting the alcohol numb me. Today was not only my release from prison but also my birthday, yet no one cared. I raised my glass, eyes stinging, muttering, "Screw it, Brittany. You're free now." Then, I waved to the waiter. "Get me your strongest drink!" When the drink arrived, I downed half my drink without thinking. Suddenly, a hand landed on my shoulder.
