A Stranger in His Office
“Doctor, how is he now?”
Aisha's voice trembled as she asked. Her swollen eyes, reddened nose, and quivering lips revealed how distressed she was. Sitting alone in the vast hospital waiting room, she struggled to hold herself together, but fear was slowly consuming her.
Every passing second felt like an eternity. Her heart pounded against her chest, and a painful lump lodged in her throat. She had spent so long trying to remain strong that she could barely feel the strength left in her body.
Ya Allah, please help me.
She clasped her trembling hands together.
I have no one except him. Please, don't take him away from me, either.
“Excuse me, miss.”
Aisha turned at the sound of the nurse's voice. For a moment, hope flickered in her exhausted eyes. She swallowed painfully, her throat dry from hours of anxiety.
“Is my brother all right?” she asked urgently. “Please, tell me he's fine. Please.”
The nurse's expression softened. Seeing the young woman's fragile state, she gently embraced her before offering her a glass of water.
“Your brother is out of danger now,” she assured her. “He's stable, but …”
She paused.
Those two words were enough to make Aisha's heart sink.
“But what?” Aisha whispered, tears gathering in her eyes. “Please, tell me.”
“Our senior doctor, Dr. Ali Zadran, would like to speak with you in his office. It would be best if you met him now.”
Aisha hesitated. All she wanted was to see her brother with her own eyes.
“Can I see him first? Please. I just need to know that he's really okay.”
Understanding her desperation, the nurse led her to a window overlooking the room where her brother was being treated.
Aisha stepped closer.
And then she saw him.
Her brother lay motionless in the hospital bed, his face pale and his body frighteningly thin. The strong, healthy man she remembered seemed to have disappeared. His clothes hung loosely on his weakened frame, his cheekbones stood out sharply, and his lips looked dry and bluish.
For a moment, she couldn't breathe.
This was the brother who had once promised to protect her from everything life could throw at them. The brother who had stood between her and the world when there was no one else to turn to.
Now he lay behind a hospital window, fighting for his life.
A tear slipped down her cheek, followed by another. She closed her eyes, unable to bear the sight of him in such a condition.
When she finally opened them again, she wiped her tears with trembling fingers.
She had to be strong.
For him.
After thanking the nurse, Aisha followed her down the corridor. When they stopped in front of a white door, she suddenly found herself unable to move.
The nurse offered her an encouraging smile.
“Please go in. He's waiting for you.”
Aisha nodded faintly.
Knock. Knock.
“Come in.”
Taking a shaky breath, she pushed open the door and stepped inside.
Behind a large desk sat a man in his early thirties, studying a stack of medical files. His expression was focused, his posture straight, and his presence carried the quiet authority of someone accustomed to being obeyed.
Aisha barely noticed any of it.
She had only one concern: her brother.
Dr. Ali Zadran was the senior physician at the hospital and the owner of the prestigious Zadran hospital network, with establishments in Dubai, Singapore, Switzerland, London, Australia, and Afghanistan.
His reputation extended far beyond his medical expertise.
He was known for two things: his striking appearance and his uncompromising nature.
Standing at six feet four inches, Ali possessed a commanding physique. His brown hair complemented his piercing grey eyes, while his straight nose, sharply defined jawline, and neatly trimmed stubble gave him a distinctly handsome appearance.
Yet his looks were only one part of his reputation.
Ali was strict, disciplined, and notoriously demanding. He expected punctuality, efficiency, and professionalism from everyone around him. Excuses rarely earned his patience.
Despite his stern nature, however, he was deeply committed to his patients. To him, their well-being always came first.
“Assalamu alaikum, Doctor.”
The soft voice interrupted his thoughts.
Ali lifted his gaze.
And stopped.
A young woman stood before him, her hands clasped nervously in front of her. She appeared to be in her early twenties, dressed in a simple dark brown and black salwar kameez. A loosely draped veil covered most of her brown hair, though a few stray strands framed her temples.
There was something striking about her appearance.
Her complexion was creamy, her face delicately shaped, and her cheekbones gave definition to her otherwise soft features. Her full lips were slightly parted, and long lashes framed a pair of unusually beautiful green eyes.
She was undeniably beautiful.
But it wasn't her beauty that held his attention for long.
It was the sorrow in her eyes.
Her lips trembled as she stood before him, and a sheen of perspiration covered her forehead. She looked exhausted, almost as though she had been carrying a burden far heavier than her young shoulders could bear.
Ali had seen countless people enter his office in distress. He had learned to remain composed in the face of fear, grief, and desperation.
Yet something about this young woman unsettled him.
She looked as though she had been fighting a battle no one else could see.
Aisha tried to steady herself, but the room began to blur around her. The sleepless hours, the fear for her brother, and the sheer weight of her exhaustion finally caught up with her.
She swayed.
Ali immediately pushed back his chair and hurried around the desk.
Before she could collapse, he caught her in his arms.
“Hey! Can you hear me?”
There was no response.
He looked down at her face. Her eyes were closed, her skin frighteningly pale. Up close, he could see the dark circles beneath her eyes and the dryness of her lips.
For reasons he couldn't explain, the sight stirred an unfamiliar feeling in his chest.
Is she the patient's sister?
His gaze lingered on her unconscious face.
Where are her parents?
He adjusted his hold to support her properly, his brows drawing together as he studied her fragile features.
Who is she? And what has she been through?
Questions filled his mind, but there were no answers.
All he knew was that this young woman had entered his office carrying a sorrow that seemed far too heavy for someone so young.
And, for the first time in a long while, Dr. Ali Zadran found himself thinking about someone he knew almost nothing about.
Someone who, without saying a single word, had managed to capture his attention.
Perhaps this was only the beginning.
Perhaps there was a lot more to come.
