"You're ganna be late for work, babe. Let's go!"
" I'm coming." Maya said, giving herself one last look in the mirror. Her stomach with nerves and excitement st the same time.
This was it.
Minutes later, Maya stood in front of the towering glass building of Atlas Innovation, her heart pounding wildly against her chest. The building looked intimidating. Huge silver doors. Security guards everywhere. Employees in expensive suits walked in and out like they owned the world.
" Atlast Innovation... please be nice to me, " she whispered under her breath before stepping inside.
Maya inhaled sharply and stepped inside. The lobby smelled faintly of citrus and polished wood. Behind the glass desk, a receptionist smiled brightly at her.
"Welcome, Mrs. White," she chirped after checking the iPad. "Naomi from HR will show you around.
" Thank you," Maya replied politely.
A woman in a fitted navy skirt suit approached her almost immediately. "Hi, Maya. I'm Naomi from HR. This way, please."
Maya nodded and followed after her like a nervous child on the first day of school. They got to the lift and Naomi pressed the top floor button. The higher the elevator climbed, the louder her heartbeat becames. When the door finally opened, Maya froze for a second. The entire floor screamed luxury. Floor to ceiling windows overlooked the city. The hallway were silent, elegant, almost intimidating.
Naomi stopped in front of a sleek black door. "And here we are. This is your office." Maya's eyes widened as she stepped inside. The office was stunning. A massive glass window overlooked the entire city skyline. A neat desk sat at the centre of the room, decorated with fresh white flowers and a silver laptop. Everything looked clean, modern, and expensive.
Then her gaze landed on the door connected to the office beside hers. Her smile faded slightly." That office... " Maya began carefully. Naomi smiled. "That belong to the CEO." Maya's stomach dropped instantly. The CEO?
Her office was beside the CEO's office? Why?
Before she could ask another question, Naomi continue. "If you need me, use the intercom." She pointed towards the small device on the desk. "And lunch break start at twelve. Don't skip it. People here gossip if the new employees disappeared on their first day." Maya laughed nervously. " Okay." Naomi smiled once before leaving the offfice.
The second the door shut, Maya exhaled heavily and dropped into the sit. A slow smile spread across her lips. She finally got a job. After months of rejection, humiliation, and being fired from her previous company without explanation.. she finally had another chance. Her fingers brushed against the smooth desk. The intercom suddenly buzzed. Maya jumped. "H-hello?" She answered quickly, trying to sound professional.
" To my office."
That deep male voice sent a strange chill down her spine. Her eyes widened. Her boss.
" Okay, sir!"
She nearly stumbled getting up. Quickly straightening her clothes, she rushed out of her office and stopped in front of his office. Her heartbeat hammered violently. Why was she nervous? It was just her boss. Taking a deep breath, she knocked softly before pushing the door open.
" Sir, I'm..."
the words died in her throat. Her eyes widened in complete shock.
Edward.
He sat behind the large desk with one hand resting lazily against his cheek, staring directly at her. A slow, dangerous smile spread across his face.
Maya forgot how to breathe. "No way.." she whispered. That familar smug smile nearly stopped her heart.
it was him.
Eward.
The same Edward she left four years ago? Her mind spin violently.
Meahwhile, Edward watched her reaction with amusement dancing in his eyes.
Interesting.
She had already seen him during the interview yet she still looked like she'd seen a ghost. Did she never imagine he could become this powerful? Edward stood slowly.
Every movement was calm. Controlled. Confident.
He walked toward her until only inches separated them, then bent slightly to meet her stunned gaze.
" What's wrong?" He asked softly. "Are you surprised?"
Maya's lips parted.
"E-Edward... h- how did you..."
A loud laugh interrupted her. Deep. Rich. Mocking.
Maya blinked in confusion.
What was so funny?
But then again... even his laugh sounded unfairly attractive. For a second, she got lost staring at him.
The expensive suit.
The sharp jawline.
The confidence radiating from him.
This wasn't the Edward she remembered.
The man was dangerous.
Edward's laughter slowly faded as his gaze dropped to her left hand.
The wedding ring.
Everything inside him went cold.
His expression darkened instantly.
A sharp wave of anger slammed into him so suddenly that he turned away before she could notice.
Taking a slow breath, Edward forced himself to calm down. Then he grabbed a file from his desk and held it out towards her without looking at her.
" Your first assignment," he said coldly.
Maya hesitated before taking the documents carefully from his hand.
Their fingers brushed.
Electricity s**t through her body instantly.
And judging by the way Edward's eyes darkened
He felt it too.
