Maya hesitantly collected the files from Edward's hand.
" A hot cup of coffee first thing every morning," Edward said coldly. "Along with my schedule. I don't tolerate lateness, mistakes, or excuses.
Maya swallowed hard.
"You"ll company me to meetings, handle my emails, and summarise these files before you leave today."
He leaned back in his chair.
"That's all. You can go."
But Maya didn't move.
She simply stared at him as though he had suddenly grown horns.
This couldn't be real.
Edward the same Edward who once borrowed money for food was now sitting in front of her like some untouchable king.
And worse.
He was her boss.
Edward slowly raised an eyebrow.
Then he snapped his fingers.
The sharp sound pulled Maya back to reality instantly.
"Y-yes, sir," she stammered before practically fleeing his office.
The moment she entered her own office, she shut the door and released a shaky breath.
" What is wrong with me?" She muttered.
Her heart still hadn't calmed down.
She dropped into her chair and immediately opened the files. The documents were thick, complicated, and packed with financial reports. This was too much work for one afternoon. Still, she forced herself to focus.
All she wanted was to prove herself.
Hours passed quickly.
Employees left for lunch, laughing and chatting outside her office, but Maya didn't move. She barely noticed the time.
By the time she finished the summary, her neck hurt and her eyes burned from staring at the screen.
But she smiled proudly.
Finally done.
Gathering the papers neatly, Maya stood up and walked toward Edward's office.
She knocked once.
" Come in."
Her fingers tightened around the files before she pushed the door open.
Edward sat behind his desk typing something on his laptop. The soft glow from the screen highlighted the sharp angles of his face.
For a brief second, Maya forgot why she came.
His grey eyes lifted slowly to hers.
The air instantly became heavy.
Maya quickly walked forward and placed the files carefully on his desk. "I finished the summary, sir,"
Edward didn't look up immediately.
Instead, his gaze remained fixed on her face.
Her emerald green eyes.
Her nervous expression.
Her soft pink lips.
For a dangerous second, he remembered the girl he used to love. Then his expression hardened again.
He picked up the files and began flipping through the pages silently.
One minute passed.
Two.
Maya stood nervously in front of him, waiting.
suddenly.
The papers hit the floor.
Maya flinched.
"Redo it."
Her eyes widened in disbelief.
" What?"
Edward leaned back in his chair, completely unbothered.
" Go and redo it again."
Maya stared at the scattered papers on the floor, anger slowly rising inside her.
She spent hours working on them.
" What exactly is wrong with the summary, sir?" she asked carefully.
Edward raised his eyes to meet hers. "Cross-check it yourself and find the mistakes."
His voice became colder.
" Or do you need me to teach you how to do your job?"
The insult hit hard.
Maya clenched her fists tightly. For one second, she almost exploded.
But she stopped herself.
He was her boss.
Without another word, she bent down, gathered the papers, and walked out.
The second she entered her office, she slammed the files onto her desk.
" That jerk," she whispered angrily.
Still, she sat down and started all over again.
The office slowly became quiet as evening approached. But Maya remained there working.
By the time she finished correcting the summary, darkness had already fallen outside.
Exhausted, she grabbed the files and headed back to Edward's office.
She knocked softly.
" Come in."
Maya pushed the door open and froze slightly. Edward wasn't alone.
A man sat comfortably across from him, looking around the same age as Edward. He had handsome features, warm brown eyes, and an easy smile that immediately made him seem approachable.
Unlike Edward, who constantly looked like he wanted to fire everyone. Maya walked toward the desk.
" Sir, I'm done." Edward didn't even look at her this time.
" Leave it on the desk." She nodded quickly.
"And you can go home."
Relief washed through her instantly.
"Thank you, sir."
She turned to leave.
" Wait."
Maya stopped and looked back. The other man had stood up.
"Hi," he said with a bright smile, stretching his hand toward her. "I'm Ethan."
Maya hesitated for a second before shaking his hand politely.
" I'm Maya."
Ethan grinned.
"That's a beautiful name."
" Thank you." She replied softly before pulling her hand away.
Then she left the office quickly.
The moment the door shut, Ethan turned toward Eward with a smirk.
"So," he drawled, wiggling his eyesbrows." You never told me you hired a beautiful personal assistant."
Eward sighed in annoyance.
"Well, now you know."
Ethan chuckled.
He had known Edward since university. Despite their opposite personalities, they somehow became best friends and later built businesses
Ethan was warm, playful, and charming.
Edward. Cold, distant, difficult.
"Come on," Ethan said, standing up. "Let's grab a drink."
"Not tonight." Edward's eyes returned to his laptop. " I still have work,"
"You're such a workaholic." Edward didn't reply.
Ethan shook his head with a laugh before grabbing his coat.
" Fine. I'm leaving then."
The office fell silent after Ethan left.
Edard stared at the screen in front of him, but the words blurred together meaninglessly.
His mind wasn't on work anymore.
It was on her.
Maya.
