Maya got home completely exhausted. The second she stepped into the apartment, she kicked off her heels, dropped her bag onto the table, and collapsed dramatically onto the couch.
"My feet are officially dead," she groaned.
A laugh came from the room. "Welcome back, boss lady."
William walked into the living room with a teasing grin on his face.
Maya rolled her eyes tiredly.
"Please don't start,"
"So," William said, sitting beside her, " how was your first day at work?"
Before Maya could answer, he gently lifted her legs onto his lap and started massaging her feet. Maya nearly moaned in relief. "Oh my God.... that feels so good."
William smirked proudly.
"I know."
Maya relaxed against the couch and started telling him everything about her day except the part where her boss happened to be her ex-boyfriend. That part stayed locked inside her chest. But she did tell him about the pressure and how Edward made her redo the summary after hours of work.
William frowned immediately.
"That's harsh."
"You think?" Maya scoffed. "He barely even checked it before throwing it away."
William shook his head sympathetically before suddenly smiling. "Well, I know exactly what'll make you feel better."
Maya narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "And what's that?"
"Go take a shower," he said dramatically. "Then come back so we can eat before you pass out."
Maya laughed softly.
"Fine."
She dragged herself upstairs, took a warm shower, and changed into something comfortable before joining William for dinner.
The rest of the evening passed peacefully. But later, that night, lying beside her sleeping husband, Maya couldn't sleep.
Every time she closed her eyes. She saw Edward.
Four years.
Four whole years had passed, yet one meeting with him was enough to destroy her peace completely. And annoyingly enough.
He looked even more handsome now.
Maya groaned and buried her face into the pillow. "Get yourself together," she whispered. But then another memory flashed through her mind.
Edward glaring at Ethan for shaking her hand. The look on his face had been priceless. Maya accidentally chuckled.
Jealous much?
Eventually, exhaustion pulled her to sleep.
-------
The next morning, Maya arrived at the office earlier than everyone else. The hallway were quiet and empty. She balanced a tray with coffee in one hand while carrying some files against her chest with the other. After reaching Edward's office, she knocked lightly.
No response.
She frowned,
"Sir?" Still nothing.
Carefully, Maya pushed the door open. The office was empty.
Strange. She walked inside and placed the files and coffee neatly on his desk. Just as she turned to leave, her eyes caught something unusual. A door at the far corner of the office stood slightly open.
Maya blinked.
Curiosity instantly crept in.
Bad idea. Very bad idea.
But before she could stop herself, her feet were already moving towards it. She pushed the door open wider and froze.
A hidden hallway.
"What the..."
The lights flickered on automatically as she stepped inside. Maya slowly walked down the narrow passage until she reached another door. Her curiosity completely took over her.
She grabbed the handle and pushed it open. The sight in front of her stole her breath away. The room was massive.
Luxurious.
A private suite.
A king-sized bed sat at the centre, while mirrors above reflected the entire room. Dark grey walls, expensive furniture, dim lighting, it looked less like a resting room and more like something out of a billionaire movie.
Maya stared in shock.
"What are you doing here, Mrs. White!"
The deep voice behind her nearly stopped her heart. Maya spun around so fast she almost tripped. And froze.
Edward stood there shirtless. Water droplets slide down his chest, disappearing beneath the towel hanging low on his waist.
Maya's eyes widened instantly.
"Oh my God..."
She turned her face away immediately. "I-I'm sorry, Mr. Carter! I didn't know..." her voice shook badly.
But unfortunately, the image of his muscular body had already burned itself into her brain. And was that a tattoo on his collarbone? Maya's curiosity almost made her look again.
Almost.
"I'll leave now," she stammered quickly. She turned to run.,,
But suddenly, a strong hand grabbed her arm. Maya gasped.
Before she could reach. Edward yanked her backward, and her body collided hard against his wet chest. The impact knocked the breath out of her lungs. Her palm instinctively pressed against his bare chest.
Warm.
Hard.
Dangerously distracting. For one suspended moment, neither of them moved. Their faces were inches apart.
Their breathing uneven. Maya could hear her own heartbeat pounding wildly.
Edward stared down at her with dark, unreadable eyes. Then reality slammed back into her. Maya quickly tried pulling away, embarrassed beyond belief. But Edward's grip on her arm tightened. She didn't dare look up again.
Not after barging into his private room like an i***t. Suddenly, his free hand lifted and cupped her jaw firmly. Maya sucked in a sharp breath as he forced her to look at him.
Grey eyes locked onto green onces.
Tension exploded instantly.
"What exactly do you think you're doing here?" He asked dangerously.
"I-I'm sorry," Maya stuttered nervously. "The door was open and I just wanted to..."
"Curiosity got the best of you?" His voice lowered. "You haven't change at all, Maya,"
His gaze slowly drifted towards her neck. Maya's breath caught. She knew that look.
Edward used to kiss her there all the time. The memory hit both of them at once.
"Edward," Maya said quickly, her voice louder this time, "I'm married now."
Silence,
The atmosphere changed instantly. Edward's expression darkened dangerously.
Rage flashed across his face. Was she reminding him that another man had her now? His jaw tightened violently. Without warning, he released her arm and stepped away.
"Get out."
His cold tone made Maya flinch. She didn't waste another second. Maya practically sprinted out of the room without looking back once. Her heart pounded wildly as she ran down the hallway. But the terrifying part wasn't his anger.
It was the way her body still reacted to him.
