1: When You Burn Alone
Ava Gobson’s POV
“Luna Ava, I'm sorry— We did our best but we… We couldn't save her…” Dr. Emily’s words pierced my heart and shattered it.
My mind was messed up, eyes focused on the blood of my three-year-old that stained Dr. Emily’s Christmas labcoat, and the medical team that just stood and watched me with pity.
No.
I scoffed, still slowly processing things. “Doctor… thank you for saving my baby…” I stuttered, feeling cold chills crawl all over my body. I didn't want to accept my reality. “Can I see my child?”
“Mrs. Ava, we lost her…”
“Stop!” I snapped.
Everything was coming together and it was overwhelming. When Dr. Emily tried to pat my shoulder, I flinched.
“My child is not dead!” I sniffled. “She was just playing at the Creche’s playground and fell. I swear, it was a minor injury…”
No one was listening. They still had that pitiful look that pissed me off.
“If you can't help her, I will take her to the best hospital. Just give her back to me.”
“Luna,” Dr. Emily sighed. “We’re deeply sorry.”
Oh, god!
I staggered backward and laughed hysterically.
My teary vision made everything blurry. The big red and green tree, along with the seasonal decor, started to spin. My rage was building to an unhealthy level and I was this close to grabbing the doctor and ripping her apart.
For the first time since my Omega years, I felt my wolf awakened with intense strength.
Unable to hold it in, I rushed towards the theater with raw anger but Dr. Emily stepped forward. “Luna…”
“Get out of my way!” I dove for her, but her team was quick to hold me back. “Leave me alone!!!”
I struggled and screamed.
“I just want my baby…” I sobbed and collapsed in a heap. “She was okay. She was healthy…”
“She wasn't!” Dr. Emily’s tone grew cold. “Isabella spent days without her medications! Her organs were weak!”
I paused, shocked. “That’s a lie!”
“You can run through her lab results.” She tried to sound respectful, then she walked away.
What is she talking about?!
I had Isabella’s meds restocked. Not many pills, but enough to last for a few days. It was the exact reason I went on the work trip and left her with her dad, Alpha Harry.
Born as an omega in a pack of powerful wolves, I was literally the slave, rejected one. Everyone spat on me until that night, on my eighteenth birthday. I shifted for the first time and my mate was no other than Alpha Harry Smith, the second heir of our pack. To everyone’s surprise, he didn't reject me.
Five years after our union, I couldn't conceive. Luckily, the moon goddess blessed me. The tests confirmed I was having twins, doctors congratulated me, but on my day of delivery, I was told it was just a child, the other was a mole. It was hard to believe, but I accepted. Hours later, my once thriving baby had a strange attack that left her incapacitated.
Now, this?!
I struggled to my feet and grabbed my purse. I needed to call Harry. This had to be a prank. He loved pranking me, especially on my birthday. It had to be!
I dialled Harry.
No response.
My mind was about to explode. I resorted to dropping a text.
‘Our baby is dead…’ My tears dropped on the screen and splashed. ‘Come right away!’
Done, I took deep breaths and tried not to break down. This had to be a dream. I pinched and slapped and kicked, the only thing constant was the pain I felt at every attempt.
It was real.
A young one in grey scrubs, walked up to me, the sacrificial lamb.
“Luna,” fear was obvious in her tone. Good for her that she kept a safe distance. “We need you to make a decision…” Her words dried in her throat when my dark red eyes pinned her down. “Sorry.” She stuttered and rushed away.
They dispatched.
My eyes scanned down the hallway to the theater door where Bella was still in. Unable to beat my curiosity, I raced down to the room and pushed the door. The first sight of my baby with tons of wires strapped to her head and bare chest, made me pause.
The BP monitor she was connected to, showed flat lines, red flat lines!!!
No… No…
It's a prank.
My hands grabbed the knob tightly but I was slowly slipping down. I couldn't take another step forward. The sound of footsteps and a familiar scent made me turn in that direction.
It was Alpha Harry.
Charlotte, my bestie, was beside him, alongside the medical team, and his guards.
He looked the same. No sign of distress, took calculated steps without any sense of urgency. Or didn't he get my text?
“Cremate the body.” He randomly said when he was close enough. “Just do away with it.”
My body froze. I tried to ask the series of questions in my head but I was speechless. Completely shocked.
A guard doubled his pace to carry out his order when I blocked the entrance, surprisingly finding strength. “Don't you dare,” I growled.
Alpha Harry sighed and stopped, now in front of me. “I’ll handle it.” He ordered the guard and faced me. “Got a report you’re making a fuss.”
My hands froze midway. I wanted to hug him so badly and slap him for wanting to casually dispose of our baby. But I stopped.
Something seemed off.
“If you don't want a burial, then you can deposit her body for free use.”
My heart broke. “Harry?! Have you lost it?!”
“Tone, young lady,” Charlotte spoke for the first time.
Confused, I faced her and picked the missing pieces. She wasn't just beside my mate, she had her arms linked with his, dressed seductively. As if to register her claim on him, she took his chin and kissed him.
In my freaking face!
I blinked, shocked, confused.
“Next time, he won't be so lenient.”
“You…” I swallowed the lump of saliva about to choke me. “You’re cheating on me?”
“Jeez, Ava. Stop sulking already…”
“I. Wasn't. Talking. To you.” I counted my words, controlling the rage about to destroy every single person in here.
“She’s right, Ava.” Harry sighed. “You know what I hate about you? Drama.” He spat out. “Getting tied to you for the past five years was torture.” He said with so much irritation and anger, ones he had masked for years while he mated me, marked me, and made me bear his pup!
“You’re just a bloody unfortunate Omega not deserving of anything good. Think I wouldn't find out?!”
His thunderous voice startled me.
“You cheated on a man who took you in when you should be fed to dogs!”
“What?” I gasped, broken. Tears flooded my vision. I shook my head, confused. “Babe…”
“Don’t you dare!” He growled.
“I’m innocent!”
“You pathetic liar.” Charlotte casually hissed. “And so you know, Harry darling, already knows that bastard isn't his.” She waved a white envelope with DNA boldly written on it. The second photo was me in a stranger’s bed. It was on the eve of our mating ceremony that Charlotte had initiated the outing. I was drunk! I wasn't even mated to Alpha Harry yet.
I trusted her. How could she do this?
Now, my weary legs gave way.
Dr. Emily’s words were starting to make sense.
Did he really deny our child the meds?!
“Is it true?” I finally found my words. “Did you withdraw Bella’s meds?”
He scoffed, nonchalant. “What’s the use? She was never gonna get cured.” He spat out, unapologetic.
My world collapsed on me and I could feel the burden about to crumble me.
“You killed our daughter?”
“Your daughter.” He corrected. “And is this the thanks that I get for doing you a favor? She was a drain anyway. Money-sucking leech…”
“How dare you!”
I stood up and fired a shot. He effortlessly grabbed me and flung me to the ground.
My bones snapped!
I screamed in pain.
My butt hurt, body ached.
The man who once loved me was gone, and before me, was an unrecognizable monster.
A terrible monster.
Charlotte’s voice echoed in the background as she laughed.
“I, Alpha Harry Smith of Windstone Pack, reject you, Ava Gobson, as my mate and Luna of my pack!”
An agonizing sharp pain stabbed my heart, ripping me into shreds, bit by bit.
Everywhere fell silent.
“This time, begging won't save you. Your things are thrown on the street, where you belong.”
The harsh words of my mate… scratch that, ex-mate, banged in my head. Anger coursed through my veins, made my head swell. Somehow, I found the strength to get back to my feet while everyone watched their shattered Luna suffer.
I stood in front of Alpha Harry, toe to toe, bleeding with pain. “You’ll regret this, even if it's the last thing I’ll do.” I ignored Charlotte. She was insignificant. “And oh, you’ll pay. With your blood, Alpha Harry.”
