LUNA'S FIRST WAR

CHAPTER 16: LUNA'S FIRST WAR The scream tore through the fortress before dawn. Saelith shot upright in Veyran’s bed. The bond flared like an alarm. Not her fear. The pack’s. Hundreds of voices. Panic. Blood. Veyran was already moving. No words. He grabbed his sword. Shirt still unbuttoned from last night. His eyes met hers. Gold. Terrifying. Determined. “Stay,” he commanded. “Pack’s under attack. Northern border. Fifty rogues. Fenris leads them.” Saelith swung her legs off the bed. Bare feet hit cold stone. “No. I’m coming with you.” Veyran turned. “Saelith, this is war. Not a council meeting. Stay here and bar the door.” “I’m Luna now,” she said, strapping on the leather armor he made for her. “The Moon marked me. The pack knelt to me. I’m not your weakness. I’m your weapon and your shield.” For three seconds he stared at her. Then the bond pulsed. Her steel resolve crashed into his Alpha pride. He nodded once. Sharp. “Stay behind me. Promise me that.” Saelith met his eyes. “I promise,” she lied. Because a Luna doesn’t hide behind her Alpha. She stands at his side or in front of him. They ran through the fortress corridors. Alarms blaring from the watchtowers. Drums beating the war rhythm. Warriors arming themselves. Females herding pups into the inner keep. The air tasted of smoke and iron and fear. On the northern stone wall, chaos reigned. Fifty rogue wolves below, scarred and starving from years in the wastelands. And at their head, ten feet tall, black fur matted with blood… Fenris. Darius’s personal beast and last weapon. “Alpha!” The guard captain shouted, blood running down his face. “They came at first light! Too fast! Too organized! Someone told them our patrol routes! We lost six males already!” Darius, Saelith thought with cold rage. Even banished beyond the borders, his venom still dripped into the pack’s veins. Even in exile, his claws scratched at Veyran’s throat. Veyran didn’t answer with words. He answered with a roar that shook the stones. He shifted mid-stride. Bones cracking. Fur exploding. Massive black wolf. Nine feet at the shoulder. Claws like scythes. The King’s Wrath unleashed after ten years of holding back. He slammed into the front line of rogues like an avalanche. Bone cracked under his weight. Blood sprayed across the snow. One down. Two. Three. But there were fifty. And Fenris advanced through the chaos, silver eyes locked on Veyran with murderous intent. Through the bond, Veyran’s voice cut into Saelith’s mind. Sharp and desperate. “Saelith, get to the tower! Lead the females and pups to the inner keep! That’s an order, Luna!” Saelith didn’t go to the keep. She climbed the nearest watchtower instead. Hands steady as she grabbed the Moon-blessed bow and quiver of silver arrows the Elder gave her when she was marked as Luna. Aim. Breathe. Release. The arrow flew true and buried itself in a rogue’s eye. He dropped. Aim. Breathe. Release. Another down. Her hands didn’t shake. Her heart didn’t race with fear. Only focus. This was what she was born for. Not to be sold like trash. To fight. To protect. To lead. Below, Veyran and Fenris crashed together in the courtyard. Alpha against Alpha. King against the King’s shadow. But Fenris was younger by five years. Faster. And Veyran was weakened from completing the bond with Saelith last night. She felt the drain through their connection like a weight on her chest. Fenris’s massive jaws closed on Veyran’s left shoulder and sank deep into muscle and sinew. Tore flesh. Blood gushed hot and red. Veyran howled and staggered. One knee hit the ground. For one heartbeat, the King’s Wrath was vulnerable. “NO!” Saelith’s scream ripped from her throat. The bond screamed with his pain. White-hot and blinding. She didn’t think. She jumped. Three stories down from the watchtower. Rolled on impact to absorb the shock. Pain exploded through her left ankle as it twisted. Didn’t matter. Adrenaline and rage burned it away. She ran straight at Fenris, limping but fast. The dagger in her hand was the one Veyran gave her weeks ago in the dungeon. Bone handle. Silver blade. “For when you’re ready to stop running,” he’d said. She was ready now. “GET OFF HIM!” she roared. Voice not human. Luna. Queen. Fury incarnate. Fenris turned. Laughed in his wolf mind. A female? Easy kill. He lowered his head to crush her skull. He was wrong about what a Luna could do when her mate bled. Saelith ducked under his lunge. Slid on the blood-slick stones under his belly where his armor was thinnest. Dagger up with both hands, using his momentum against him. Straight up. Straight into the soft spot under his ribs. Straight into his heart. The blade sank to the hilt. Fenris froze mid-roar. Silver eyes went wide with shock. Then empty as the light left them. He collapsed without a sound. Dead before he hit the stones. Killed by the ‘trash’ female he never saw coming. Silence fell over the battlefield. The rogues froze mid-charge. Their leader was dead. Their purpose gone. Saelith stood over Fenris’s body, chest heaving, dagger dripping blood. Her injured ankle trembled but held her up. She looked up at the rogues. Eyes glowing silver from the Moon’s blessing. Voice echoing off the walls. “I am Saelith Blackthorn,” she declared. Clear and loud. “Luna of this pack. Mate of the Alpha. Leave now, and live. Stay, and join him in ash. Choose now.” One by one, the rogues lowered their heads. Then turned and ran, fleeing back into the wastelands. War over. Without Veyran slaughtering them all. Because the Luna ended it with one strike and one choice. Veyran shifted back to human form. Stumbled two steps before his knees buckled. Hand clutched to his bleeding shoulder, blood pouring between his fingers. Saelith was at his side. Hands glowing with Moonlight healing. “No, no,” she whispered, forehead to his. “You promised you wouldn’t die on me, Alpha. Not now.” Veyran’s hand caught her wrist. “Wasn’t planning to. But you jumped. Three stories. For me. Why risk yourself?” “Because you’re mine,” she said. Tears cutting through blood on her face. “My Alpha. My mate. My heart. I protect what’s mine. Always.” The bond flared brighter than ever. Not with pain. With awe and understanding. He saw her then. Really saw her. Not just his mate. His equal. His Luna. His war and his peace. Veyran cupped her bloodied face gently. Thumb brushed her cheekbone. “You didn’t hide. You led. You saved the pack. You saved me. The Moon gave me a Queen worth bleeding for.” Saelith leaned into his touch. “That’s what Luna does.” She pressed her lips to his forehead. Soft and reverent. “You protected them with claws and rage. I protected them with choice and strategy. Together we’re unbreakable. No one touches our pack again.” Veyran’s eyes closed. For the first time in ten years, he let someone else be strong for him. Let his mate carry the weight he carried alone. He exhaled like surrender and relief and coming home. “Come,” Saelith said. She looped his arm over her shoulders. Took his weight like it was nothing. “Let me take care of you now, Veyran. My turn to be strong.” They walked back through the fortress slowly. Blood leaving a trail behind them. But heads held high and spines straight. Their bond blazing between them for all to see. The pack watched them pass in silence. Then one by one, warriors dropped to one knee. Then females. Then elders. Then pups. Not just for their Alpha. For their Luna. For the female who jumped off a wall to save them. For the female who killed Fenris with one strike. In the healing chamber, Saelith cleaned Veyran’s wound with steady hands. Herbs. Moonwater. Her healing light through the bond. Her mouth pressed soft kisses to his scars as she worked. Not s****l. Worship. Thank you. I see you. I choose you. Veyran watched her through half-lidded eyes. “Last night you chose me. Today you chose them. When do you choose yourself, Saelith? When do you rest?” Saelith looked up from his wound. “I did. I chose you. And they are you. Your pack is your heart. So they’re mine too. My family. My heart. I choose all of it. I choose you.” The bond pulsed warm and full. Complete in a new way. Not just lovers. Partners. King and Queen. Alpha and Luna. Two halves of one soul, finally whole. Veyran pulled her onto the bed beside him. Arm around her waist, pulling her close. Face buried in her hair, inhaling her scent. “You smell like battle and Moonlight and courage. My favorite combination.” Saelith laughed softly. Exhausted but safe. “And you smell like blood and storms and stubborn pride. My favorite disaster.” They lay in silence as the sun set, painting the room gold. The pack celebrating outside with howls and drums. But in here… just them. Just peace. Just two hearts beating as one through the bond. Veyran’s fingers traced patterns on her arm. “Tomorrow I’m spending all day just holding you. No war councils. No rogues. No Darius. Just you and me and silence. Promise you’ll let me?” Saelith turned and straddled his lap carefully to avoid his wound. Hands on his chest over his heart and mate mark. “Promise. Only if you promise to heal. For me, not the pack. For me, Veyran.” “On the Moon,” he vowed. Then his hand caught her jaw and pulled her down. Kissed her slowly. Not desperate like the dungeon. Not claiming like the chamber. This kiss was gratitude. Relief. Home. Slow and deep like he had forever to learn her. Saelith melted into him. Hands fisting in his hair. The bond sang with joy and peace and love. No more ash. No more war. Just this. Just them. Just forever starting now. When they broke apart, Veyran rested his forehead on hers. “My Luna. My war. My peace. My everything, Saelith. My heart beats only for you now.” Saelith smiled against his lips. Kissed him once more. “Rest now, Alpha. Luna’s got the watch tonight. No one touches you while I breathe.” And for the first time in ten years… Veyran Blackthorn slept without nightmares. Because his Luna stood guard over his soul. --- EPISODE END To be continued in Chapter 17: LUNA'S NIGHT
