Act 1: Awakening : Episode 1: The Bite
A Forest Cloaked in Secrets
The Blackthorn Forest was a place of mystery. Generations of Blackthorn’s residents had spun tales about its shadowed depths: eerie whispers that carried on the wind, strange movements in the shadows, and rumors of creatures far older than any of them dared imagine.
To Selene Carter, though, it was simply home.
She walked the forest paths more often than the crowded sidewalks of Blackthorn. There was solace in its quiet, in the wind’s gentle hum and the familiar rhythm of her boots crunching leaves underfoot. Tonight, however, the forest felt different. The moon, just a sliver in the sky, cast faint, silvery light through the canopy, but it did little to dispel the strange unease gnawing at her.
Her shift at the Blackthorn Book Nook had run longer than expected—again. A shipment of antique tomes had arrived, and Selene, the only employee who seemed to care, had stayed late to sort them. She didn’t mind the extra work. The store was her refuge from the world, and she preferred cataloging dusty volumes over awkward small talk with the town’s gossip-hungry residents.
But now, alone in the woods, she regretted lingering so late. Her flashlight’s weak beam danced over the narrow trail, and the shadows seemed to move just beyond its reach. She tried to focus on the comforting sounds of the forest—the rustle of leaves, the distant call of an owl—but her nerves were frayed.
Snap.
Selene froze. The sound came from somewhere to her right, too deliberate to be the wind. She held her breath, turning slowly to scan the darkness.
“Probably just a deer,” she muttered to herself, though her voice trembled.
She forced her legs to move, quickening her pace. The path ahead curved sharply, and she swore she saw a shadow dart across it. Her heart hammered in her chest as a cold sweat broke out on her neck.
“Get a grip, Selene,” she whispered, clutching the flashlight tightly.
Snap.
This time, the sound came from behind her. Her pulse spiked, and she spun around, her flashlight beam piercing the darkness. There was nothing there—only trees and the faint mist curling around their trunks.
“Hello?” she called out, her voice shaky.
No answer.
A Predator in the Shadows
The silence stretched, and Selene’s fear mounted. She turned back toward the trail, intending to run, but the moment she took a step, she felt it: the heavy presence of something watching her.
Then she saw them—two glowing amber eyes staring at her from the darkness.
Her breath caught in her throat. The creature stepped into the light, and Selene’s knees nearly buckled. It was a wolf, but impossibly large, its dark fur bristling and its eyes burning with a malevolent light. Its lips curled back in a snarl, revealing sharp, glistening teeth.
Selene took a shaky step backward. “Nice wolf,” she whispered, though her voice cracked.
The wolf growled, its body tense as though preparing to lunge. Selene didn’t wait. She turned and ran, her flashlight bouncing wildly as she sprinted down the trail.
Her lungs burned, and her heart felt like it might burst from her chest, but she didn’t dare look back. The wolf’s footsteps thundered behind her, growing louder with each passing second.
She didn’t see the root protruding from the ground until it was too late. Her foot caught, and she went sprawling forward, her flashlight flying out of her hand.
The impact knocked the wind out of her, but she didn’t have time to recover. The wolf was on her in an instant, its massive paws pinning her to the ground. She screamed, thrashing beneath its weight, but it was no use.
The wolf’s jaws snapped inches from her face, its hot breath washing over her. Selene clawed at the ground, desperate to free herself, but the creature was too strong.
Then came the pain.
The wolf’s teeth sank into her shoulder, and she screamed as fire seemed to explode through her body. It wasn’t just pain—it was something deeper, something primal. It burned through her veins, consuming her like an unrelenting blaze.
Just when she thought she couldn’t take it anymore, a sudden force slammed into the wolf, knocking it off her. Selene’s vision blurred, and she saw only fragments: the wolf lying motionless a few feet away, a figure standing over it, a wooden staff glinting faintly in the moonlight.
The figure turned toward her, his green eyes glowing faintly in the darkness. “Stay still,” he said, his voice low but commanding.
Selene’s consciousness slipped away, the world fading into darkness.
The Cabin of Secrets
Selene woke slowly, the crackling of a fire and the scent of pine drawing her back to reality. Her body ached, particularly her shoulder, and she groaned as she tried to sit up.
“Don’t move too fast,” a voice said.
She turned her head, squinting at the figure sitting across the room. It was a man—tall, with dark hair and piercing green eyes. He leaned forward, his hands resting on his knees as he watched her carefully.
“Who… who are you?” Selene croaked.
“Ronan,” he said simply. “You’re safe now.”
“Safe?” Selene laughed bitterly, wincing at the pain it caused. “A wolf attacked me, and now I feel like my entire body is on fire. What part of that is safe?”
Ronan’s expression darkened. “It wasn’t just a wolf,” he said. “It was a werewolf. And now, because of the bite, you’re one too.”
Selene stared at him, waiting for him to laugh, to tell her this was some twisted joke. But his expression remained grim.
“That’s not possible,” she said, shaking her head.
“I wish it wasn’t,” Ronan said. “But you’ve already started to feel the changes, haven’t you? The heightened senses? The heat in your veins?”
Selene opened her mouth to deny it, but the truth stopped her. Even now, she could hear the faint crackle of the fire, the wind outside the cabin. Her sense of smell was sharper, too, picking up the earthy scent of the room.
“What’s happening to me?” she whispered.
“The bite is changing you,” Ronan said. “By the next full moon, you’ll be a full-fledged werewolf.”
The Weight of Prophecy
Selene struggled to process his words. Werewolves weren’t real. They were just stories, legends. Yet everything about this felt real—the pain, the changes in her body, the memory of the wolf’s glowing eyes.
“There’s more,” Ronan said, his tone hesitant.
Selene frowned. “What do you mean, more?”
“The bite didn’t just change you,” Ronan said. “It marked you. There’s a prophecy—one that speaks of a wolf born under the crescent moon. A wolf destined to unite our kind… or destroy it.”
Selene stared at him, her mind reeling. “You’re joking,” she said, though she knew he wasn’t.
“I’m not,” Ronan said. “The mark on your shoulder is proof. You’re the one the prophecy speaks of.”
“This can’t be happening,” Selene whispered, burying her face in her hands.
“I know it’s a lot to take in,” Ronan said. “But you don’t have much time to figure it out. The full moon is coming, and when it does, your transformation will be complete.”
Selene looked up at him, her eyes blazing with anger. “You keep talking like I have a choice,” she said. “But I didn’t ask for this. I didn’t want any of this.”
“No one does,” Ronan said quietly. “But that doesn’t change the fact that it’s happening. You can either let it consume you, or you can fight it.”
A New Beginning
As the hours passed, Ronan began teaching Selene about the world she was now part of—a hidden society of werewolves, bound by ancient laws and traditions.
He explained the difference between packs and rogues, the latter being wolves who had lost their connection to their pack and, with it, their sanity. The wolf that had attacked her had been a rogue, driven mad by its isolation.
“What about you?” Selene asked. “Are you part of a pack?”
Ronan hesitated. “I was,” he said. “But not anymore.”
He didn’t elaborate, and Selene didn’t press him. She was too overwhelmed to care about his past when her future was spiraling out of control.
The Path Forward
By the time dawn began to break, Selene had made a decision. She didn’t know what the future held, but she wasn’t going to let it control her.
“What do I do now?” she asked Ronan.
He smiled faintly, his green eyes gleaming. “You learn to fight,” he said. “You learn to control the wolf inside you. And you survive.”
Selene nodded, a spark of determination igniting within her. Whatever lay ahead, she would face it head-on.
